Would like to shrink a sweatshirt - any tips?

I bought a sweatshirt in the smallest size possible but it is still huge (rather than oversized). I sooooo love it and would be gutted to have to return it. I know it is risky but has anyone successfully shrunk an item of clothing a few sizes? It is a soft cotton sweater. Thank you!

What does the washing label say? Just wash it on a hotter wash than it advises.
I recently shrank a jumper dress that was massive beforehand, unfortunately the arms shrank too which wasn’t quite the look I was after Grin

It says 100% cotton?

Op if you don't want to risk the colour fading/running in hotter water you can always put it in the tumble dryer, if it's going to shrink that will do it.

Thanks! Should I try putting it in the tumble dryer (dry rather than wet?!)

Send it to my DP to wash.

You can’t control how much it shrinks by dodgy laundry though, and it will go all stiff and rigid rather than a bit stretchy and floppy.

Arghhhhhhh! Unless I see if a tailor can bring the seam in? Then costs mount up!

If you love it, I'd take it to somewhere that does alterations instead of risking shrinking it in the tumbledrier or hot wash. They'd give you a price before doing it so you decide if it was worth it.

If you're nto worried about colour bleed, wash it in a very hot wash then put it in the tumble drier on the hottest setting. Don't put it in dry, the fabric strands need to be damp to shrink.

Just bung in 60 degree wash then tumble dry - I have a history of shrinking things lol

Thanks All, it is a patterned sweatshirt.

The problem with shrinking stuff is it never shrinks in the direction you want it to . So it will probably get much shorter but not more narrow . Can you not just wear it with super tights jeans ?
