Illuminating primer- do I need it?

I've got very dehydrated 40 year old skin that could do with being a bit more glowy. I've just read about Charlotte Tilbury's Brightening Youth Glow. Anyone used that and would you recommend it? I don't want anything too heavy, anything that will settle into lines or anything sparkly!

I'm 46 and personally I find the Charlotte Tilbury stuff quite strong smelling and a bit greasy. I was bought the Bobbi Brown Illuminating Moisture Balm in pink glow for my birthday and it's good under foundation, although I don't think it makes a massive difference. What's your skincare routine like? I think you can probably achieve a glow through better skincare/diet/exercise than through a product, although they are good for a quick fix! Another good one is the Elemis Pro-Radiance Illuminating Flash Balm.

I've got wonderglow from CT which I like.

I have dry skin and it works well with that. Doesn't settle into lines.

I've got a sample of the new one you mention but haven't tried it.

Can do so tomorrow and let you know?

Bugger it - I've just been upstairs opened the sachet and slapped a bit on the back my hand.

So wonderglow is a beige colour, same texture as a light liquid foundation and gives a slight sheen to the face and you can apply it all over.

This one is much more liquid and white in colour. Goes on translucent.

It's definitely more sparkly than wonderglow- I have a bit on each hand.

Texture is nice and can't see it settling into lines but tbh my first thought is it's probably a bit to full on to apply all over the face - certainly for daytime. Might be nice on cheekbones etc but I won't be buying it.

I do like wonder glow though.

Having said all that my favourite product is the hourglass ambient light palate (I have versions 1 and 3).

Contains powder, blush, bronzer and illuminanator. Just makes my skin look better without looking sparkly. Use it every day. It's pricy but you get 6 products and it's very versatile. Doesn't settle into fine lines. I bought v3 as I've hit the pan just about on v1 on every 6 powders.

I use the Estee Lauder illuminating primer and would happily replace it once it runs out. Wasn't so keen on the CT wonderglow but quite like Clarins.

Is the Laura mercier one quite bronzer-y? I want a sort of pearlescent one rather than a bronzer one...

I use Back to Baby Glow beam by 3 Concept Eyes which I got from Cult Beauty. It's a pink based primer from Korea and I love it! I've got quite pale skin so I don't like anything too bronze/orange. I use it after my oil based moisturiser and before my foundation. I have tried some others (Estee Lauder, NYX), but this Korean thing is the best one I've found so far!

mrsfluffytail · 01/03/2018 19:01

The Laura Mercier radiance has a subtle pearly glow. There's other versions but I really like this one. Works nicely on its own or is a fab primer for foundation or tinted moisturiser.

DarthNigel · 05/03/2018 10:42

Thanks Mrs fluffy-I got some of the Laura mercier-it's great schizzle!

The Loreal Illuminique (spelling probably incorrect) is amazing imo. It’s in a long white tube. I think they do a more peachy one too, if you have darker skin.

I have used it with Estee Lauder Doublewear, which I love for the staying power but hate for it’s flat look. It gives the finish a lovely subtle glow.

If I’m not wearing foundation, I just dab it on my cheeks to add a bit of shine too.

I like the Rosie by Autograph version of the CT one. Considerably cheaper and does give a bit of a glow without glitter. Another good one, but spendier, is Backlit Primer. Another good High Street one is Soap & Glory Hocus Focus. Powders can be good too - Hourglass Ambient ones - I used the Diffused Light version when my skin looks a bit blah. (I like the Dim light version too.) e.l.f do a palate of 4 highlighters which are an okay budget one, as do Make Up Revolution. They are RIP offs of he Hourglass ones but if you are on a budget they are not a bad option. The Hourglass ones are good but way over priced.

Timefortea99 · 05/03/2018 10:49

Backlit Primer is from Becca btw
