Has anyone had braces as an adult?

So I am currently looking into getting braces. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice? Which type did you get? If you have had them did your teeth stay straight?

Also how long did you wear them for? I'm hoping to get them straight before my wedding next year.

I am 2 years into my treatment oh the NHS and I am almost 32. I qualify for NHS treatment because I am having double jaw surgery to fix my overbite and gummy smile.

Best thing I have EVER done. Can't recommend it enough, you won't regret it.

Another vote for Invisalign! Mine is a simple case so only 14 trays which I got on an offer day for £1,250 (upper only). Would just warn that they may not be totally invisible, I have bobbles on mine which you can see through the braces plus had some filing done so just make sure all of that aligns with your wedding plans. Good luck!

Thanks for an interesting thread OP! I looked into getting mine straightened a few years ago but I didn’t warm to the orthodontist my dentist referred me to. Also the fact that I’d need 4 teeth removed and can’t have Invisalign (my teeth are very crowded) really put me off.

I’m only early 30s so after hearing all your success stories it’s something I’m reconsidering - will need to save for a while first!

I saw this question asked but don’t think it was answered - how did you choose a practitioner / orthodontist?

OP taking them out for your wedding may not be a good plan - as a pp said, you have little white bobbles attached to the middle of your teeth for the invisalign braces to catch onto so that they can apply the presure needed to move your teeth. These are removed once your whole course is finished. If you remove them for your wedding, you will still have the bobbles on your teeth - you would probably find that photos will look better with the braces on.

Im pleased I did mine, but I do seem to have found that my gums have receded as a result - some of the tray moulding was a bit too high I think and pushed them back which means the bottom of them are yellowing now which is rather annoying. In retrospect, considering I have a desk job and was showing them off to everyone anyway, standard old-style braces would probably have been better.

Rumpleteezer & StormTreader thanks for the info regarding the bobbles! I will just wait and see what they say. I have 18 months so I am hoping this will be long enough but I will calm down and wait till I’ve had my consultation instead of assuming things.

My DP loves my ‘quirky’ teeth so I can’t see him being agreeable to postponing the wedding because of my braces Grin

Yes, I had NHS braces in my early twenties. I had to have ugly train tracks because those were the only braces on offer and yes my teeth are lovely and straight now as I approach 30.

The NHS do not usually cover braces for over 18s but I had a baby tooth in place of my canine and needed a General Anaesthetic op to pull the canine down.

It could be painful at times but ibuprofen and ice cream help!

I'm going to miss my first appointment because of the bloody snow Angry

I had ceramic braces fitted top and bottom teeth at the start of this week. I'm 51 and have been putting off for years. I've had a lot of stick in the office but I'm sure everyone will now get used to me wearing them. My orthodontist says I'll need them for 14 months! I'd decided to go for these instead of Invisalign because I didn't trust myself to wear them for long enough every day and just want to get this sorted as soon as possible! Good luck to everyone else whose wearing braces today! 🙂

My mum did it 30 years ago, her mouth looked sore and the braces looked obvious. She never regretted it, even back then when the technology was obviously less aesthetically pleasing and very uncomfortable!

Have you heard of Smile Direct, OP? There are reviews on YouTube and it looks quite promising and v cheap.

I went in for the 3D scan and was ready to sign up but I’m going to see the orthodontist at my dental surgery as they do Invisalign and I want to compare the two.

But basically I watched a few videos and was sold so I’m really excited to get Invisalign or similar ASAP!
