We're going to a wedding in Scotland in a couple of weeks and it's dawned on me I need a dress to wear. I'm mid forties, 5'4" and a size 12-14. I'm also short-waisted so most fitted styles just don't fit me as the waist and hips are in wrong place.

I suit boat, slash, scoop and v-neck styles and nothing too fussy/frilly. I have decent boobs and legs but big hips. I like this but am open to other ideas. Open on budget, especially if it's something I can wear again.

I’m really sorry but I don’t think it would suit you, I think it would make you look bigger than you are, if you have ‘decent’ boobs I would wear something a little more low cut to take the attention away from your hips if you don’t like them? What are your arms like? Do you like them covered?

silver1977 · 25/02/2018 17:43

Agee with PP, sorry. I think it may be too long and at risk of looking frumpy. It looks a bit long for the model in the picture. Maybe a dress with a darker colour bottom half and lighter top? I have a dress from Ted Baker that is a black skirt section and cream top half and looks quite flattering (apparently!).

wowfudge · 25/02/2018 17:52

Thanks for the feedback. I don't like low cut as I just feel self-conscious and do prefer my arms covered. I had a look at Ted Baker and the dresses with a different coloured top were skater style, which does nothing for me - I look like a 5 year old in them! Would prefer a bit of sophistication - my DP knows the groom, but I will know no one there at all.

I think it's fabulous - definitely worth trying on.

Sparkletastic · 25/02/2018 17:54

Also love the fact that it is both wedding appropriate and totally wearable for a number of other occasions.

dibly · 25/02/2018 17:56

I'm 45 and I love it. Looks like it would skim in all the right places. What kind of accessories are you thinking of?

FeedtheTree · 25/02/2018 17:58

So are you sort of Kirsty-Allsop-at-her-slimmest shaped? She has nice legs and boobs with big hips and looks great in the dress shape you've posted.

AdiosPeaceOfRoast · 25/02/2018 17:58

It’s one of those dresses that you’re only going to know by trying on, it could look fabulous.

Oxfordblue · 25/02/2018 18:01

Oh I think it's fab! Please try it (or else I might have too!)

CountFosco · 25/02/2018 18:02

I'd look at Finery if I was you, they have interesting dresses for different body shapes.

wowfudge · 25/02/2018 18:07

Ha ha - I'm going to have to try it, aren't I? I think Kirsty is quite a bit taller than me and an hourglass - whereas my frame is pear shaped but petite - I've narrow shoulders and a defined waist. I'm losing weight, having put quite a bit on over a stressful few years, but I'm not there yet. I want to feel fabulous, rather than 'this'll do' if you know what I mean.

I have no idea about accessories - happy to be advised! I have a lovely black Reiss handbag and black heels I'd wear with the the red dress.

Finery is a good call - I've got some fab trousers from there.

Sorry, i am a similar age and shape and I don't like it. What about something like this:
www.metisu.com/red-a-line-sheer-sleeve-lace-midi-dress-5202.html?currency=gbp&gclid=Cj0KCQiA2snUBRDfARIsAIGfpqGcaCdYUe9xP-xKgd0Ag-PMQZNsz3RKv-iVc6Mprw4tHbXZkcDyRzUaAr2HEALw_wcB

wowfudge · 25/02/2018 19:12

Food for thought Kazplus2, thank you. It does have to be red btw - I am a true Winter or whatever it is so strong colours suit me.

Planning on ordering a few things to try tonight.

OP posts:
wowfudge · 25/02/2018 19:13

It doesn't have to be red!

Bluntness100 · 25/02/2018 20:46

I think that dress would be really hard to pull off. It's the lack of tailoring and the fluid baggy shape and fluted sleeves which I agree will it be flattering.

I would go for something either more structured or a proper wrap dress.

wowfudge · 25/02/2018 20:53

Well, I'll definitely give it and the one Kazplus2 linked to a go. I don't want a wrap dress as I have several I wear for work.

wowfudge · 08/03/2018 18:55

I thought I'd post an update. The & other stories dress was too wide under my arms to my waist so the ties didn't sit right. I think it's a dress for someone of a different shape though quality wise it was good and fully lined. The Metisu red dress Kazplus2 linked to is too tight on the top - the lace was also caught in the zip which took some sorting out with damaging it. However, this is really nice on and flattering. So I'll ask DP's opinion and probably ignore anything negative he has to say! He told me something I tried on the other day was 'too old'.

OP posts:
chimpandzee · 08/03/2018 19:06

I think it's gorgeous, and now I want it too !

wowfudge · 04/04/2018 08:11

A word of warning about Metisu. I ordered two dresses because they do returns and I always need to try things on. Kept one, wanted to return the other as it didn't fit on the bust.

What a nightmare. First of all you have to email them to request a refund - they don't advertise their returns address, but do make it clear it isn't the despatch address. They take ages to respond to emails and it takes at least two further emails to make any progress after they try to fob you off. Then you start again like groundhog day.

They offered me a £5 refund and 10% off my next order. I refused as it doesn't fit and they increased their offer to 15% off. I persisted and posted a review of the poor experience on Trust Pilot. They finally acquiesced and provided a returns address in China. The dress cost me £37 and return airmail £8.50. Fair enough, buyer pays return postage, but they are now saying they need a tracking number to check whether they've got it back. Quite why when there's a completed returns form in the parcel, I don't know.

So I'm £45.50 down and I feel they are con artists - they don't want you to return anything and certainly don't want to refund you. Never, ever again will I buy anything from these con artists.

wowfudge · 04/04/2018 09:06

Missing the point of my update there @lovemylover!
