First bras

My 10 YO DD would like something with a little more support than a crop top so I was looking for first bras in M&S, was going to try 28AA, and I am surprised to find that all but one of the offerings are either padded or moulded. Why??

Their nipples can be v sensitive on growing breasts so they are softer, plus it hides any embarrassing reactions to the cold. They aren't all like that, my dd has some m and bras that are just cotton.

Quadrangle · 25/02/2018 09:12

I think it's because school shirts are thin so they might not want their nipples showing through. Same idea as a t shirt bra

Fairylea · 25/02/2018 09:14

Reasons as above. Dd wouldn’t wear one without additional lining or slight padding. School shirts show everything.

Next and H and M have some lovely ones in teen / smaller sizes.

Quadrangle · 25/02/2018 09:16

Dd wears the flesh coloured ones as they don't show through unlike white

PhilODox · 25/02/2018 09:32

Quad-Core where are you getting flesh-coloured ones, please? Would prefer those than white!

Fairylea · 25/02/2018 09:36

Nude one in this pack- www.next.co.uk/xo57034s4#450807

Lweji · 25/02/2018 09:37

Have you measured her?

Quadrangle · 25/02/2018 11:06

Phil dd13 gets fitted for these ones and buys 2 packs of the black and beige ones. She wears beige to school and black outide school

It's fashionable on mumsnet to pearl clutch about marks bras but they work fine for dd and me

Fairylea · 25/02/2018 11:10

Marks and Spencer’s bras themselves aren’t awful it’s the fitting that people get angry about because they fit to the old rules which are wrong. That’s all. No one should be adding or subtracting anything from an under boob measurement.

Quadrangle · 25/02/2018 11:11

They do a good job with me and dd

Fairylea · 25/02/2018 11:11

Good links and explanations here - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3177196-To-ask-for-your-help-to-find-a-bra

PhilODox · 25/02/2018 11:23

Thanks quad and fairy.

PhilODox · 25/02/2018 11:28

Iwillsurvive- debenhams have nice, unpadded ones- DD had white (grr), pretty blue with white spots (obv not for under uniform!), and they had pink too. They were comfy (she has sensory issues!) she just outgrew them v quickly, as she had a growth spurt (all over).

WillowWept · 25/02/2018 11:29

I felt the same when DD first wore a bra - I didn't like the moulded cups at all but in actual fact they're much more practical because if the coverage.

DD now 13 and she likes M&S

SoupDragon · 25/02/2018 11:40

DD’s first bras came from M&S and she preferred the moulded ones. We’ve just got her second ones from Primark.

SoupDragon · 25/02/2018 11:41

I wasn’t happy with the moulded cups but DD was happy, comfortable and not embarrassed so that was the main thing!

SmallestInTheClass · 25/02/2018 12:23

Nothing more mortising than visible nipples when wearing first bra over a flimsy school shirt or PE top in the freezing cold. This post reminded me I used to put folded tissues in mine to prevent this Grin Glad to hear they make lightly padded ones now.

IWillSurviveHeyHey · 25/02/2018 15:23

Ah I see what you're all saying about moulded cups. It makes sense actually. Not too worried about skin coloured ones as DD's uniform is red. I have measured around just under her breasts and she is 27cm. Cup size wise, it's really just buds, which is why I was going to go for AA as it's the smallest?
