Is there any such thing as a grown up pinafore?

I need to buy a denim dress as for a theme night, and have been toying with the idea of a denim pinafore anyway. But I’m 35. Is there any way to wear such a thing at my age?? Anyone got one, or seen one which is passable? I’m 5ft, size 8-10. Don’t want anything too baggy or sack like! Small budget £30/40ish preferably.

No constructive suggestions but I wear dungarees and pinafore dresses - that style really suits me as I'm short and becoming slender, I'm 61 and nothing riles me more than anyone suggesting particular sorts of clothing are not suitable for anyone above a certain age. If a denim pinafore suits you age is irrelevant.

Pinafore dresses (and dungarees) need very careful handling IMO.

As far as I can see slim, small chested women look best in them but you have to be careful with the styling of the rest of your outfit or you can look a bit odd.

They seem quite 'in' at the moment - 2 or 3 folk at work (from 30 - 55ish) wear them.

My two favourite pinafore dresses are Brora ones, an old silk lined tweed one that I've had for years which I wear with an Orla Kiely long sleeved T shirt and lac up front brown boots. I also have the last seasons plaid one with studded pockets, I wear a fine muted red top under that one, or a black one. My Top shop black Moto Dungarees are won with a long sleeved white top and Pewter Geox Trainers.

Pep and Co have some in. Not worth spending loads if it's not something you are sure of

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 21/02/2018 14:14

Sainsbury's!

IdblowJonSnow · 21/02/2018 16:44

Hi op. I am the same size and height as you and sometimes wear them w stripey tops and boots and am bit older than you! Agree age not really an issue. Oasis often sell them. : )

MaudesMum · 21/02/2018 16:50

I've just bought one similar to this www.toa.st/uk/product/womens+oas+workwear/c1icb/black+denim+pinafore+dress.htm?categoryref=%2fcategory.aspx%3fcategoryid%3dwomens%2520oas%2520workwear%26seoterm%3dwomens%2520oas%2520workwear%26&pcat=womens+oas+workwear&adimage=&clr=C1ICB_Black_sw - mine was grey and in the Toast sale so a lot cheaper. I think it looks ok on me (50-something) and will be wearing it through the spring/summer with stripey tops, trainers/clumpy boots. So maybe long is the way to go?

Bluesheep8 · 21/02/2018 18:39

I'm 44 and i wear them, got a denim one from Sainsburys, I'm 5 ft 5 and a size 8-10 and have had compliments when wearing it from much younger women. As a pp said, if something suits you, age is irrelevant.

Spartacunt · 21/02/2018 19:05

I wear them - Toast do fabulous ones, not cheap but last a lifetime and a great length.

MikeUniformMike · 21/02/2018 19:48

Sainsbury's, New Look, DP and Primark are possible places to look but you could try Fat face too. The Toast ones are lovely.
An alternative to a pinafore would be a slip style in a chambray fabric.
I have a shirt type dress in a denim tencel fabric I like.
Just because you are not in your teens or 20s doesn't mean you can't look good in something.

SeaSalt’s Art Book denim pinafore is what I’d call a grown up style. It’s £65.00 though

Pistachiois50pmore · 21/02/2018 20:04

COS have a good grown up corduroy one at the moment. Monki often do denim dungaree dresses which you could style to be grown up with a fine knit black roll neck etc, although you will have to wade through a few pages of mad sack dresses covered in emoji cats to find the gold.

OutyMcOutface · 21/02/2018 20:10

Look for a second hand Toast one online.

thehairyhog · 21/02/2018 20:50

I’ve got a nice B&sh one from ASOS (am late thirties) which I think I carry off, but wasn’t cheap. Can’t carry off my dungarees any more though Sad
