Philips Lumea for face chin hair - will it work?

newsparklythings · 17/02/2018 18:45

I have a light skinned face and dark hair. Specifically, two large thick sprouts of chin hair that I currently shave twice a day. I'm only mid-30s it's horrible. Possible PCOS.

The Philips Lumea BRI956/00 is about £400 so not cheap. Has anyone experience of it working/not working on face hair? Most of the online reviews seem to be about leg and arm hair.

I’ve also toyed with getting one. I believe they work best if you have dark hair and fair skin which I do thankfully. I’m worried about the pain though! And forking out that much if it doesn’t work!

SleepingBooty · 17/02/2018 20:51

Yes. Fabulous machine, worked wonders for my dark facial hair. It's also cleared my armpit hair, working towards leg at the moment.

Littlelambpeep · 17/02/2018 20:52

Which one do you have booty

WeeM · 17/02/2018 20:56

I’ve just been looking and they seem to vary in price quite a lot between models, not sure what the differences are!

chloechloe · 17/02/2018 21:19

Following with interest as I have PCOS too and have to get the tweezers out on my neck and chin every day Shock

MissWimpyDimple · 17/02/2018 21:22

Yes brilliant. Worked for me. I think you can get cheaper versions that are suitable for face too?

Mine is some years old but still going strong. Lumea precision plus

Catherine0317 · 17/02/2018 21:23

Hi I bought one during the summer. PCOS & chin hair. It’s ok - I thought it would be better TBH. I really think your hair has to be quite dark. That’s what worked for me. It took about 50% of hairs.
Ps - it doesn’t hurt at all!

xyzandabc · 17/02/2018 21:23

I have a corded one with face attachment, not sure which model it is, I'm sure it wasn't £400 though, I think £200 and something.
It's really not painful at all and has definitely made a difference to facial hair. I am very fair skinned with dark hair though, it hasn't touched the few hairs that are white.

I will say though that I really really struggle to get the facial attachment to work at all. It's such a small surface area, I can't get the angles right for it to flash. I therefore just use the larger body attachment on chin and upper lip. Does the job fine.

JustTerfingAlong1 · 17/02/2018 21:24

How long does the removal last? I had laser (hospital grade) done about 10 years ago and it is all coming back :(

SilverHairedCat · 17/02/2018 21:25

I have the SC1997. Can't recommend it enough.

CocoLoco87 · 17/02/2018 21:27

Philips Lumea precision plus changed my life!

Titsywoo · 17/02/2018 21:28

The lumea is brilliant. When I shave my legs and use it I find it takes a few weeks to start growing back. It doesn't hurt at all.

Ohyesiam · 17/02/2018 21:29

I think the price difference is about the amount of "zaps" the unit has.
I have ( or rather had) heavy facial hair, and the Smoothskin Gold has worked wonders. There are can few tenacious ones holding in there, but about a 70% improvement.

Worieddd · 17/02/2018 22:55

I use it on my cheeks and upper lips it’s been brilliant

Itscurtainsforyou · 17/02/2018 23:12

My hair growth is getting out of hand - I was going to get a lumea from boots but they're all really high in price. Any other recommendations?

newsparklythings · 18/02/2018 08:50

Oh no! I was looking at this one on John Lewis, was £400 yesterday and the price has suddenly risen to £475 overnight!

It has also gone up by the same amount on Amazon overnight

The other models are £275 or £519

It will go down again. You will just have to wait it out. I got the top of the range model as my dd is mixed race. I'm really impressed with it. I'll just go and check my amazon and see how much I paid for it in November.

VandelayIndustries · 18/02/2018 08:55

£289 for the BRI956/00

SilverHairedCat · 18/02/2018 08:56

Keep an eye on Boots. I got mine there on an extra points day, so it gave me £50 worth of points.

newsparklythings · 18/02/2018 09:01

Vandelay where did you see that price?
Thanks Silver

I tried the £200 model. I bought it specifically for my dark facial hair ( I've very pale skin). It didn't work at all. Philips refunded me the money which I thought was decent of them.

bakingbee · 18/02/2018 09:01

The Aldi one seems to be getting good reviews - it's £99

SilverHairedCat · 18/02/2018 09:06

Ooh yes to the customer service - my original one was a cheap one, but it worked OK. I think I paid £125 in Boots (plus my £50 points on top). I actually registered it with Philips, and kept the receipt in the box. It packed up about 7 months later so I contacted Philips, they sent me a pre pay label to return my duff one, and sent me a much more expensive model as a replacement as mine was no longer made!

VandelayIndustries · 18/02/2018 09:12

That's how much I paid from Amazon in November. It does seem to be one of those things that goes up and down a lot. It was the same at JL then too.
