Curly hair and fringe?

DD10 has curly hair down past her waist which unless its in two french plaits its a mess and there is so much hair in front that she is constanlty pushing out of her face, she also has lots of little baby hairs around her hairline that fall out of the plaits throughout the day and stick outwards around her face which especially when the rest of her hair is pulled back she hates.

She is not willing to lose length but has mentioned she wants to get a fringe, at the moment her hair is more wavy than curly but I think thats down to the weight of it and if she had a fridge it would be tight curls like she had when she was little, so I think the only option would be to straighten it every morning or blowdry it straight when its wet.

Does anyone have any experiance with having a fringe and curly hair? Is it too much hassle or manageable?

I usually have to straighten mine every morning, but do find if I blow dry it instead of letting it dry naturally, It's not quite as unmanageable. Also wetting it down in the morning and blow drying works well if I don't have a straighter with me. My hair goes unruly and matted if I don't plait it too!

Is she able to do her own hair and would she be able to blow dry it herself every morning/after every shower? Otherwise I'd wait before getting a fringe, as they are a pain in the bum and take ages to grow out! I've had a fringe most of my life (blessed with a huge forehead) but I've only really got the hang of it now in my early 20s, so that minimum styling is required!

I have curly hair, I’ve had a fringe about 5 times in my life. Every time I do it I think it’s a good idea, it’s always, without fail, a disaster. They don’t sit right, they take ages to get right/straight then it rains & you look like Kevin Keegan on a bad hair day, or it doesn’t rain but you get a bit hot & your fringe frizzes to 10 times it’s normal thickness. You spend 10 minutes a day looking ok & the rest wishing you’d never had a fringe

I would encourager not to. How about changing her parting, would that help ?

  • encourage her 🙄

You have described my DD10's hair. It's a nightmare, it never looks tidy. I would say never to a fringe.

I had a fringe with curly hair for many years and well recall all the above phenomena.

The styling tools are better, though. A Babyliss Big Hair is perfect for a fringe and safe for her to use, unlike straighteners.

can be a super cool look but is not as low maintenance as it appears....

let her get a fringe and leave it curly... why not?

just pin it back if she doesn't like it.

Why couldn't she have her fringe curly? I think straight fringes look a bit odd when the rest of the hair is curly. Mine and my son's are more like roberta's first picture, and that looks a lot more natural to me.

gingerh4ir · 17/02/2018 20:48

curly fringes rock. just google pics of "curly fringe" or "curly bangs" - lots of inspiration Smile

ForSaleChesterDraws · 17/02/2018 22:45

Curly fringes are cool. Straightened fringes with the rest of the hair curly are not as cool.

MaybeDoctor · 17/02/2018 23:27

Ah, but as the natural tendency of the hair is to curl, you don’t end up with a straight fringe - it just avoids the Kevin Keegan.

robertaplumkin · 18/02/2018 01:01

a straightened fringe with curly hair is just dreadful !

llangennith · 18/02/2018 01:06

No! I have curly hair and I’d love a fringe but it just looks awful. Even if you straighten it, any moisture in the air or if you get a bit hot and sweaty it’s a horrible frizzy mess.
As you’re the parent and she’s only 10 how about you step up and tell her she needs to have a few inches cut off to make it easier to manage but a fringe is out if the question.

Ivebeenaroundtheblock · 18/02/2018 01:09

i have curly wavy hair and had a pixie cut trying to let it grow...right now the pieces that are fringe length stick straight UP....
hair dresser suggests product to keep it down as i wait for it to grow longer (or i get sick of it and chop it back to a pixie again)

SulSulNarfab · 18/02/2018 05:14

I have curly hair and a fringe. These days I wear my fringe curly and it looks sort of like the first pic robertaplumkin posted but I used to straighten it and I think it looked nice. It was sometimes hard work if there was any hint of sweat/heat/rain etc. because it would curl up. Took a fair bit of hair spray and training it to fall a certain way.

Yes, that’s what I mean. Like your picture, btw!

Having said that, I don’t have a fringe now and it is much less hassle. But I do still smooth out the front section of my hair (mostly using a BBH), as it sits better around the face - and still seems to curl a bit anyway.

upsideup · 18/02/2018 09:54

Thankyou for the advice. A lot of the pictures with curly hair and fringes do look really cool and the only reason we wanted to straighten the fringe is because now the rest of her hair is so long and heavy its much less curly more like frizzy waves but if we cut the fringe shorter and there wasnt as much weight it will likely be super tight ringlets that grow outwards rather than down. Also when her hair is in two tight french plaits which it is every school day you can't tell that her hair is curly anyway, so I think it would look more odd with a wild curly fringe and the rest of her hair neat and pulled back.
If she wanted full curls for a day then it would probably look best with the fringe left curly once we learnt to style it.
