Acne Scarring

I have battled with acne on and off since I was about 13, I'm now 24. I was using medicated face stuff which helped a bit when I was having an acne flare-up, but then I got pregnant and was told to stop using anything, and my skin got really bad. I'm 21 weeks now and things are finally calming down, which I'm so pleased about, but I have even more red acne scars now which are getting me down Sad. Is there anything that actually helps them heal faster or anything?

Try sudocreme?

BagelGoesWalking · 09/02/2018 12:02

Azelaic Acid from the Ordinary can help- many fans of this product.

Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 mucin Power Essence (top left in pic) is another favourite for the healing properties of snail filtrate. I got a 10 pack of samples from eBay as you need to patch test as some ppl are allergic. There are UK stockists of the full size product.

Sali Hughes did a fantastic video with Dr Dennis Gross recently, where they covered acne and scarring. It's worth a watch (even if some treatments aren't available in the UK yet) ((www.salihughesbeauty.com/uncategorized/ask-nyc-derm/))

I have found that using gentler products is actually helping my acne and scarring. I used Murad time release cleanser and anti aging anti-blemish moisturiser (before it got too expensive) as they were anti-adult acne without being stripping, now I use Vichy Normaderm. I find the salycilic acid in both has helped both the acne and resulting scarring, without being too astringent

I don't agree with medication for it. I had stuff oral and creams in my teens but it made me worse.
I had a good few years of not getting flare ups except time of the month but each of my pregnancies I had bad skin. I just continued and left it.

I feel like if anything good food and eliminating anything that hasn't had a life like fruit and veg is the way to go. Caffeine, unhealthy foods seem to flare it up more.

I know it's not the modern way but it seems like the only way. It will get better after.

rightknockered · 09/02/2018 20:53

Well that isn't true.
I suffer from hormonal acne and my diet is very clean, with not one cheat food. I'm extremely controlled, it's boring. Would bore anyone to an early grave. BUT I still get spots. Retin A and acid toners help.

derma pen - google before and after pics

PsychoSyd · 09/02/2018 21:38

Rosehip oil is good.

giddyupnow · 09/02/2018 21:41

Try fresh lemon juice on it. It’s a miracle worker game changer for me and I’ve been through roaccutane etc. And egg white face mask - google it.

giddyupnow · 09/02/2018 21:42

Salicylic acid poss contraindicated in pregnancy?

Terramirabilis · 09/02/2018 21:44

Don't use retinoids/retinol in pregnancy for sure.

I'm also avoiding salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide since there seems to be concern about them, although not the the extent of retinol.

I feel your pain!

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/02/2018 07:51

I was going to say red LED light, it won't have been tested on pg women though.

You can buy led masks on eBay/Amazon.

BagelGoesWalking · 10/02/2018 10:47

Please don't put lemon juice or baking soda anywhere near your face.

MeadowHay · 10/02/2018 11:46

Yeah I didn't really bother saying earlier but obviously over the years have tried lots of dietary changes and nothing improved my acne. It's definitely hormonal as is it is miles better when I'm taking the combined contraceptive pill. I know medicated products does not help everyone but the combined contraceptive pill does help me significantly, and in the past antibiotics have helped significantly too. I think salicyclic acid helps a little bit as well but was under the impression I shouldn't be using it whilst pregnant?

Lemon juice will surely give me eczema?! Yeah that's not going on my skin lol.

Anyway as I say my acne is improving now itself thank fuck but the scarring is grim. I could cover it with makeup but I cba to wear makeup every day, I only wear foundation when I'm going out somewhere nice. Looks like I will probably just have to grow a thicker skin at least til the end of my pregnancy by the looks of things though Sad.

I was actually going to be put on roaccutane after seeing my GP and the dermatology nurses for awhile but we decided we wanted to TTC so that put paid to that idea. Sigh.

If it's the scarring you'd like to deal with rather than the acne, rosehip oil worked wonders for my DD (22).

WeeM · 10/02/2018 15:07

I’ve used la roche possay effaclar duo moisturiser for a few years now and it definitely helps I think. it’s not a magic cure but it’s definitely helped the redness. I also really like it a moisturiser as it’s not too rich for my skin
