Roaccutane and contraception

agapanthus1979 · 04/02/2018 14:47

Hi,
Several roaccutane threads at the mo, so thought I'd add one!
Started my second course. All ok. I know the need for contraception, But was wondering whether anyone has relied on condoms rather than having to go back on the pill?
Came off the pill about 5 months ago. Was fine on it, but prefer being hormone free. Will go back on if really necessary, but would rather not.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Ags.

Honestly if it's the same as it used to be you'd need to be very certain you would use them properly - a pregnancy on this medication would possibly be heartbreaking

Maybe condoms and ovulation tracking?

I was told I had to be on a 'heavy duty' contraception like Mirena or the copper coil, but it's worth discussing it with your dermatologist Smile

When I took Roaccutane they refused to prescribe it unless I signed an agreement promising to take the pill. No other contraception was deemed acceptable. If you couldn't or wouldn't take the pill, they wouldn't prescribe the Roaccutane. I found it frustrating as I didn't want to take the pill.

I wouldn't risk it, sorry. I would put up with the pill until you're off the roaccutane. Rubbish, I know. Have you tried dianette? It worked quite well for me.

agapanthus1979 · 04/02/2018 15:22

It is frustrating.
Been on Dianette before but never again-made me a monster!
Been on Lucette. As I said, was fine on it - if just been enjoying hormone liberation!!
How were you all when you came back off the pill after you finished roaccutane?

My sister went on it for 2nd time and was able to stay contraceptives free as her husband has had a vasectomy.

Might be a little drastic, Keira! Wink

The NHS at least my trust say condoms and the pill.

When I last had it they said LARC (implant, coil or injection) plus condoms.
