Dd is 13 and has quite a lot of little spots, blackheads she's very good at washing her face and does so every morning/evening with a clean and clear face wash but it doesn't appear to be helping

At moment she has a bit of dryness out also has a more greesey nose

She's keen to clear her skin up and recommendations to something affective, simple and kind for a teen?

She is make up, hair mad and spends a lot of time on her appearance

This looks like mild teenage acne.

I'd see the GP.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/02/2018 14:02

Foaming washes are a bit harsh, look on Caroline hirons cleansing cheat sheets & acne sheet.

Then see the GP.

It's probably puberty hormone based isn't it?.

Lovethebubbles · 04/02/2018 14:06

I would recommend la Roche posay effaclar range

Bringonspring · 04/02/2018 14:06

It’s hormone base so there is not much cleansers can do. I would see the GP (be prepared for trial and error on finding the right help) and remember none of them are overnight miracles.

In the interim a mild cleanser and a good moisturiser

lnging · 04/02/2018 14:13

Would the doctor help seeing as really it is quite mild?

My sister suffered as a teen and hers was awful huge white heads, boils etc and I remember she got medication from doctors.

Her dad had bad ache as a teen also so maybe she's following him

See the GP and ask for Duac

Scabetty · 04/02/2018 14:17

Both dd and Ds had very bad spots at 13/14. Dd found washing with cetaphil worked. Ds is now using Mario Barlescu products. He finds them less drying than some other products.

NoStraightEdges · 04/02/2018 14:19

I'd get her to hot cloth cleanse and moisturise with something gentle like aveeno.

Hope it clears up soon

Kitsharrington · 04/02/2018 14:34

You could try Differin gel. Definitely get reading over on Caroline Hirons.

BusterGonad · 04/02/2018 14:39

I agree with ditching the Clean and Clear and going for something mild and nonstripping.

expatmigrant · 04/02/2018 14:52

I would take her to the GP. They're much better with treating teenage acne now.

tropicalwaterdiver · 04/02/2018 15:29

It might be the result of yeast overgrowth. Was she prescribed any antibiotics recently/before it started?

This blog was an eye opener to me longhairedatheart.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/yeast-had-caused-my-bad-skin.html

The most simple step is to wash face/skin with anti-dandruff shampoo for 2-3 days and watch if that makes any difference.

If it's yeast, you will see the improvement very quickly.

TeenagersandFurbabies · 04/02/2018 15:41

Try Freederm gel. My 14 year old DD uses this and it seems to be keeping her skin fairly clear.

pinkmoomin · 04/02/2018 16:20
  • Wash face with Cetaphil - definitely don’t use harsh medicated scrubs or foaming face washes
  • Definitely take her to see a GP - Duac gel helps my DDs acne
  • Cut down on sugar and diary in the diet
  • Take a good multi-vitamin and cod liver oil capsules
  • Non-Comedogenic make-up!

Hope it clears ups soon. I suffered as a teenager and it can really knock your self-confidence so don’t hesitate taking her to see a GP. Good luck!

Passthecake30 · 04/02/2018 17:29

If she has dry skin then is the clean and clear too strong?

PNGirl · 04/02/2018 17:57

Clean and Clear will be too harsh I'd say. Dry with a greasy nose is usually due to too much astringent. Maybe get her to try micellar water instead.

When I was a teenager Imperialis from Lush sorted out my teenage skin. It's soothing and lasts ages.

hauntedhenry · 04/02/2018 18:15

I agree that the Clean and Clear is probably too harsh. I would recomend a mild cleanser like cetaphil or la Roche Posay Toleriane. Remove very gently with a warm flannel or muslin cloth, then splash a few times with warm water to make sure it's all off. Use cetaphil on dry areas. On any big spots a dab of tea tree oil is good to dry them up. Don't complicate matters by using loads of stuff, it will just aggravate it more. If it doesn't clear up, go to the GP or see a dermatologist - Dr Sam Bunting has good advice on YouTube.

hauntedhenry · 04/02/2018 18:17

Cetaphil moisturiser on dry areas, I mean, not the cleanser again :S

Minestheoneinthegreen · 04/02/2018 19:36

Very similar skin on forehead and chin to my dd. Mine uses clean and clear and I am fairly sure she uses my facial scrub in the shower sometimes

I do find one thing that really helps is diet. Her father had chronic acne and it was always so much worse if he ate crap. I try to limit her sugar and dairy and if she's been VERY low sugar i notice a huge difference. She wasn't keen at first but even she admits she notices the difference. Not a solution, but definitely helps.
