Reaction to ppd in hair dye? Should I retry it?

I had a reaction on the back of my neck to a hair dye which I had been using for 8 years. It had an alternative to ppd - ptds in it but that is close to ppd.
Anyway, I have tried a semi permanent to cover the grey hair I have but it doesn't do the job. Should I retry a hair dye which says it has a very low level of ppd in it? (After doing a patch test). I'd like to also highlight
my very dark hair so don't really want to go down the henna route.

Patch test it. Prepare to throw it out.

Thanks. Any other suggestions?

I wouldn't personally.

ElanorGamgee · 04/02/2018 15:21

I wouldn’t try it again. Look at Daniel field organics, home dye, no ppds.

It was Daniel Fields I had a reaction to. After many years of use. It doesn't have ppd in it but a very similar chemical called ptsd.

Henna?

Test patch as said by pp

Please be careful OP.
i'm always mindful of a young woman in our town, who died after a reaction to hair dye, she left young children and a dh, it was heartbreaking to hear about it, and so avoidable.
I know it's rare, but couldn't read this and not post.
I'm aware you aren't silly as you are testing on one you haven't been previously allergic to.

Can I please use your thread to ask people to always do an allergy test, even if you have used the same one for years and never had a reaction.
You can develop an allergy between applications. Thanks

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 04/02/2018 17:38

I don't believe you "grow out" of a PPD reaction. My understanding is that they get worse with time, not better.

I'd be throwing it out; it's not worth the risk.

AnnaMagnani · 04/02/2018 18:28

No. Now you have an allergy. It doesn't go away.

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 04/02/2018 18:31

Thanks some good advice. Yes I have a friend who does a patch test before every application of hair dye.

I wouldn't - people get some terrible reactions to these once they are sensitised.

DuckBilledAardvark · 05/02/2018 00:07

No! Please don't even think about trying it.

I have a friend who had a reaction, she was hospitalised and suffers life long consequences as a result of the reaction.

She was very lucky not to die.
