The stupidest question ever about tv makeup...

Nowadays, it's much easier for pale people to find a pale shade of foundation (although I haven't found mine!) but I was wondering what they used for pale actors/actresses in the 60's/70's and so on- did they put face paint on them? I'm genuinely asking, even now I can't find a pale enough foundation but in films- even in older ones, the pale actresses obviously have some form of a base on without it being darker than their skin - how?Confused

Have you tried Nicola Roberts range ?

JaneJeffer · 03/02/2018 12:41

Max Factor "invented" make-up for the film industry en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Factor. Lots of info here but that won't help you find a foundation!

TV make up is generally a lot stronger than usual make up.they put quite orange stuff on me as the set is blue. It worked in that specific context. In person I reminded myself slightly of girls in the 90s who wanted to look tanned and maybe had that tide mark on the neck.
I have pale skin with pink/blue tones.
Very very pale.
I've been able to find foundation that works.
I don't wear make up often (last time was, indeed, for tv) but last one I bought was bobbi brown I think

NIcola Roberts range is now discontinued sportyfool, which is a shame

Theatre make up will often be made up from bases which include white-yellow-pink so a custom shade can be found

I struggle to find pale enough bases too. Mac has some very pale shades. I've heard Fenty Beauty does. NYX do too and can be found in bigger Boots : plus custom drops you can adjust with like this

Try www.screenface.co.uk

Leichner stick, mixed on a palette. Proper stage makeup outlets. Am 55 and once trod the boards!

OP, you might try Mac Face and Body in White. You add it to foundation/facecream and it lifts and whitens 😊

BluePony · 03/02/2018 14:33

Thanks for all the recommendations! So was it actual foundation they used to use or more like face paint?

If you are looking for an unusual colour, there are your people www.cosmeticsalacarte.com

If they don't have it already, then can blend especially for you.

Pan stick type of product but very, very drying. Had to sponge it on and goose fat it off. With cold cream 😊. It smelled divine and even today, if I’m near the front watching a ballet, as soon as the curtain goes up, I can detect “that” smell. The sticks were encased in paper so, you peeled it off as it went down, with use.

Seriously, try the Mac product. It’s very good.
