14 year old holiday possible period. Help

Sorry about the clumsy subject.
My DD who is 14 and has very erratic periods is going away at half term with her friend for a week in Majorca.
Her period may start and she is desperate to swim. She cannot and I mean really really can't cope with tampons. Any ideas about any clothing that can protect her if she swims?
I've Googled a few things but I'm not sure about swimming.
Any help welcome thanks.

I've never used one myself but a mooncup might be worth investigating.

WindowsSmindows · 03/02/2018 09:57

God no to a moon cup and a fourteen year old. I keep getting pop up ads for period proof underwear, maybe Google and see if there is a swim wear version?

Get her an appointment at the doctors about a month before you go away. They can prescribe Norethisterone tablets to delay her period.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 03/02/2018 09:59

Could the Dr prescribe the pill. Any reason why she can't cope with tampons? DD couldn't and then at about 16 had a closer look and realised things weren't quite right. She had a septaye hymen. Worth thinking about.

ilovetvandchocolates · 03/02/2018 09:59

Sorry just realised you've said half term, get her an appointment ASAP to start taking the tablets!

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 03/02/2018 10:01

Just read up on the side effects - norethisterone makes me feel rubbish and brings on the period from hell when I finish taking it. She’ll (and probably the mum taking her) need to be prepared for that.

Pappawasarollingbone · 03/02/2018 10:10

When I showed her how to use a tampon she fainted. It was awful.
So mooncup and tampons are a massive no. I wanted to avoid the dr as I'm worried she won't feel well with any kind of pill.
Sorry if I seem negative.
I will buy some of the underwear and hope it works or even better the period is late.

I think a dose an NSAID can delay a period too. Like nurofen?

Pappawasarollingbone · 03/02/2018 10:15

Nearly ok I will investigate. Thank you.

Yes - just read up, but has to be quite a high dose. Might be worth a try for a week though if she’s taken it before without any issues.

Tranexamic acid will also reduce bleeding if she does start - I think you can buy this OTC in Boots.

God no to a moon cup and a fourteen year old. Why not?

OP I would go for norethisterone. They work.

Jinglebells99 · 03/02/2018 10:21

My dd has been prescribed norethisterone to avoid her period on school trips and holidays a few times. She hasn't had any side effects taking it, and has just enjoyed her holiday. I've taken it too in the past with no side effects. I can't imagine period proof underwear working unless she has very light periods. You have to start taking them a couple of days before the period is due and erratic periods would be a problem.

Bluedoglead · 03/02/2018 10:21

I would go and get her norethisterone.

Pappawasarollingbone · 03/02/2018 10:25

Great I will look into all the suggestions thank you.

I would go and get her the tablets too. If she takes them until the day she's back, she'll then be at home if the period is a bad one. I think the stress and embarrassment of trying to deal with a period on a beach holiday at 14, with another family could ruin the experience for her.

PaperdollCartoon · 03/02/2018 10:27

Is there a major reason she can’t cope with tampons? I started using them very early on.

Pappawasarollingbone · 03/02/2018 10:30

Paper she fainted when she tried them. Properly fainted. She is incredibly squeamish and has been forever so it's just not possible for her. She really tried but it was a really strong reaction.

I used norethisterone for years. Irregular periods were never an issue. I just started taking it a couple of days before I went away. So if a period was imminent it stopped it and if it wasn't, no harm done.

AuroraBora · 03/02/2018 15:52

Why not ask her if she wants to go on the combined pill? I had irregular periods throughout my teens and it was hell. Once bled for the duration of a two week holiday Hmm

Then at least she’ll have control over knowing when her period will be, and can back-to-back packets if she doesn’t want one over a holiday. Unless they don’t advise that for teens for some reason.

MargotLovedTom1 · 03/02/2018 15:55

I must be the only person for whom norethisterone doesn't work.
