New thread for those hoping to add a bit of Parisian je ne sais quoi and je m'en fous to their style.

Okay, new question for you all to ponder, although not especially Parisian. DS18, has a thing for flamboyant clothing. He loves sumptuous fabrics and colour, albeit in very classic masculine shapes. I showed him some rather glorious Indian cashmere dress overcoats, one of which he has fallen in love with. It's red, patterned and there's one (presuming a return) in the sale section at about half price. He wouldn't wear it often, but it's a bit larger than him so as he adds muscle/bulk, it would be a wedding, party topcoat to go over a dark shirt and trousers, or jeans and a T. He and I reckon that it would last him a lifetime for fancy pants events, so he's wondering about buying it. I have suggested that he needs to negotiate an exit from the standard T&C (sale items not exchangeable or refundable) so he can try it on (shop is UK but hundreds of miles away). He has the money saved and was planning to get a new phone. here. Opinions.

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 29/03/2018 20:25

@OCSockOrphanage that is beautiful and it's brilliant he has individuality!

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 29/03/2018 20:28

A Paris question but not fashion related....I'm going to a trade show and need to stay within reasonable walking distance of the Gare du Nord so I can get the RER to Villepinte every day. I know I could stay close to the exhibition hall but that really doesn't appeal. Any recommendations?

AuldAlliance · 29/03/2018 20:52

Midlife, what sort of budget?

OCSock that coat is beautiful. Much more than a phone...

Catching up, I think it may very well be that COS discriminates against pear shapes somewhat, and petites. It's mostly ample apples, straight up and down types and hourglasses that do well there. I love the look of that dress Elle, never seen an online exclusive with them before though. Although in my case it's usually the things that look promising that look awful and the things that look dreadful on a hanger or the online models that look good on me at COS.

Speaking of COS' antisocial marketing, remember that wooly conceptual 'tribe' new millennial brand from H&M I mentioned yonks ago, linking to that delightfully poncy article Hmm. Was supposed to launch in Jan IIRC but got an email today to expect something soon, good luck to them, apparently, H&M is sitting on $4.5 billion worth of stock that isn't shifting...

I have a grudge to bear with Alois Guinut (though I'm sure the book will be nice, but unlikely to offer much new, but who knows), she was once featured in the Guardian revealing her 'best' shopping addresses as you can book her as a sort of stylist session whilst visiting Paris. A lot of shops I never heard of, went to check them out and they were all universally shite...

Auld, are you doing an ACV and clay mask? I did that once, and whilst nice (mine had jojoba oil and rice bran oil in too) I kept finding dried clay everywhere for weeks Shock

peony, the band on SMc is smaller so if you're wearing one size up for comfort that size usually is ok, just a touch snugger at first, otherwise size one up. Bottoms I've not noticed them being smaller or bigger than other brands but they are generally cut lower on the stomach.

Sock, I want that coat for myself! Definitely, pull up the vendor, by EU law all e-commerce retailers have to accept returns within a certain time frame (can't remember if it's 7 or 14 days). There is a 'but' coming, I'm not a fan of the justification that you'll wear it forever hence it's worth the money. It's so easy to slip into that when it's a pricey item, I think the problem is that you're then inclined to keep it for best (as it was costly, and to be worn for special occasions, etc.) and realistically doesn't come out much. I can see that working far beyond regular formal wear, as a trans-seasonal outer coat over a woolly (charcoal) jumper. I think the doubling up of coats should work well for men too, the extra bulk usually flatters, so he can experiment wearing it under or over another coat to make it less formal. Combining it with (vintage) denim could be exciting, there's something vaguely Kimono-esque about it.

Midlife, I really don't like the neighbourhood around Gare du Nord and wouldn't be all that comfortable staying there on my own. Is there not a shuttle service from Le Palais de Congres, that was the case last time I visited a trade fair in Paris at La Villette and the hotels there are very cheap and the RER A connection into Paris is very quick as it's train rather than Metro, it's 10 mins at most IIRC.

botemp · 29/03/2018 21:05

Forgot to discuss Dries, Elle, there's a fab pair of trousers on eBay, quite utilitarian and feels very current. It's a size 38 but it looks quite big though, if you're not still fasting let me know and I'll PM you the listing.

Mango also appears to be getting inspired by dear old Dries, the skirt looks nice in the picture but I doubt it'll be that nice in RL. The shoes may very easily be mistaken for the real thing though.

OCSockOrphanage · 29/03/2018 21:06

Thanks, Bo. I agree that it is a garment to be worn as often as possible, with everything, as soon as you receive it (provided it fits). I can see it over nice jeans and T shirt, dark shirt and trousers for weddings/parties, or for Saturday afternoon shopping. Thank you even more for reminding me of EU law on returns; the company want to reserve the right to refund in store credit, which is too hard on an 18 yo who has saved pennies. I am being softened up to contribute to this.

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 29/03/2018 21:23

@AuldAlliance and @botemp , £100 a night as work will be paying. Not sure about a shuttle, there was certainly one to CDG last time but I don't know about the other direction. I'm tagging on a weekend so could actually book one boring, convenient for Villepinte location and another convenient for cultural activities (aka shopping)

botemp · 29/03/2018 21:25

Would it fit you too, Sock Grin

Here's the relevant info from the EU. 14 days and a full refund. Just make sure, since they offer it, he doesn't have it altered or personalised by them (as offered on the site) as it would be a bespoke item and that would not allow him to return it.

OCSockOrphanage · 29/03/2018 21:28

It would, but I have been threatened with having my hands stapled to a door if I ever even try it on. We can quite comfortably wear each others clothes, but he looks great and I am 61!

peonylover22 · 29/03/2018 21:38

Thanks Bo! I love that Mango skirt too...
Of course, neither of these items are on the need to purchase list (trainers, summer sandals, bikini, summer skirts, grey /taupe cross body bag) but some of those items will need lengthy research and consideration.

botemp · 29/03/2018 21:38

I've had my hand stapled before, doesn't hurt as much as you think. Go for it and post pics for us here before you bleed all over it Halo

Midlife, it's right by CDG so there's plenty of hotels there. I think CitizenM should be within budget. Full disclosure, slightly biased as I worked on them, but it's a lovely concept, everything you want from a 5 star hotel and none of the superfluous stuff, good showers, great beds, wireless speakers, great breakfast, free wifi (it's ridiculous how the more you pay for a hotel room the more likely you're charged for it) etc. They're compact rooms but that's the entirety of Paris and they have very social communal spaces. Think they were opening a location in Paris centre as well but it may just be out of the budget there.

peonylover22 · 29/03/2018 22:03

Ta dah! Just purchased this bra and matching knickers. Hope they are as beautiful in real life as they are on my phone.

AuldAlliance · 29/03/2018 22:35

Midlife the Hôtel Mademoiselle is meant to be quite nice. It might be over budget, and isn't right by the station, but maybe worth a try.

I don't want to be negative, but have you checked whether the period when you're there coincides with an SNCF strike? They've planned lots for the next 3 months, and if you're there during one that will be pretty decisive as regards where you stay in relation to where you need to be.

Sock, slightly off topic, but can I ask about your continued experience with the nuface again? I've seen they've now launched a body version. Suddenly I'm interested Blush

Got a preview invite for the new Nyden brand (mentioned above), they addressed me as 'tribe' . Had a look, ehm... right... overpriced t-shirts in black and white... Can't believe there are some sold out already Confused

Wow that coat is fabulous Sock and how great to hear about young men with distinctive taste. My son and friends (male and female) are all welded into their hoodies. Totally agree about not saving it for best and I only wish I knew of a cure - even now I'm still blighted by it although I'm better than I was.

And very interesting to hear about H&M - that 4 billion can't all be down to me, surely! I'm sorry to hear they're in trouble but not at all surprised - they've seriously gone downhill in the last year or two.

Floisme · 30/03/2018 09:11

Is it whole H&M corporation or just H&M the store, do you know bo? I've been googling it but none of the reports I've seen make it clear.

botemp · 30/03/2018 09:22

I tend to put the more dramatic/flamboyant stuff at the front of the racks as that's where I'll start browsing. Helps a bit.

Here's the article for the H&M decline. I actually had been looking more at H&M lately but have been put off somewhat by their pricing, I noticed they dropped the prices in store though as things were subtly restickered, even on the Studio Collection. My younger cousins don't shop there at all, they feel it's all out of their price range, they predominantly shop online but they'll shop full price at Zara Confused which is terrible value for money in my opinion.

Floisme · 30/03/2018 09:43

Thanks, for the article, bo I'll save it to read properly later. If their solution is to drop prices even further then that'll probably be the end of the line for me, although I accept I'm not their target demographic. It's sad because, although they always gad a lot of shite, they used to have some really great, ageless stuff if you rummaged. They've really missed a trick with their website though. My local store is pretty grim these days but I won't shop with them online as I refuse to send for 4 sizes of everything.

redlondonbuses · 30/03/2018 10:05

hello! Smile I've been loosely following the various threads related to this one for a while, love this little Parisian style loving community!

I'm starting a new part time job soon, working for a private design school as a tutor. I and am going to need to buy some (affordable) key capsule wardrobe pieces that are smart and professional but still youthful and stylish.

I'm 36, size 8/10, 5'4" and have a background in architecture and design and took some time out of my career in recent years so feel a bit out of touch and not having had much money to spend on myself I've dressed pretty basically and haven't really enjoyed fashion/style much as a result.

The college work means tutoring mature students who are very wealthy and groomed (lots of designer handbags and expensive highlights) and I need to look appropriate for a professional designer/tutor. We don't have a set look for tutors and some dress very casually, some quite funky, some in typical office wear.

This job signals a huge change in my life and I'm keen to fully embrace that change and find again an enjoyment in fashion and spending money/time on myself after a difficult few years. I love Parisian style which is how I found these lovely threads.

I'd love to hear your recommendations especially yours botemp! Any suggestions v grateful received.

Lisette40 · 30/03/2018 12:01

redlondonbuses congrats on your new job. I've taught as a tutor so I know it can be tricky to dress for that environment. I found this US book quite good - does colours as well as clothing for work:

OCSockOrphanage · 30/03/2018 14:47

Well, thank you all for your compliments on DS' idiosyncratic tastes! He emailed the shop and she replied saying of course she'd refund him... but he wouldn't be sending it back as it is awesome! We are currently considering joint ownership!

Would you prefer thoughts on the NuFace on the skincare thread, Bo?

Lisette40 · 30/03/2018 14:50

It really is a lovely cost ocsock

Lisette40 · 30/03/2018 14:50

Coat, sorry - autocorrect

OCSockOrphanage · 30/03/2018 20:13

DS is wedded to hoodies, but only at home, Flo. He will assemble an outfit to go out for milk! He loves clothes as much as we do, but has fewer opportunities and less money (school uniform for another term) so the peacock urge has to be managed. Definitely didn't inherit this from DH, so it must be my genes.
