Peri menopausal scarecrow hair- help

Dreamslongforgotten75 · 01/02/2018 21:02

Can anyone help me sort out this crazy hair of mine ? I’m 43 and going through peri menopause and my hair is just awful. It’s gone from being thick, shiny and healthy to thin, flat and crispy Shock I’ve tried lots of different products but to no avail. It’s cut and colored on a regular basis and I don’t use a straightener anymore. Nothing I do do seems to make a difference. I drink a ton of water but admittedly dont take any omegas. Anyone have any gems of wisdom ?

Do you feel okay? My hair got thinner when my thyroid started fizzling out. Can also be caused by anaemia.

Thyroid fine but ferritin is 9. Managed to get my overall iron up but ferritin is not budging. So frustrating Sad

Have you tried Philip Kingsley Elasticiser ?

Thiscantreallybehappening · 02/02/2018 10:05

Sorry posted too soon. The Philip Kingsley Elasticizer is a hair mask, you can leave it on overnight or just pop it on for 30 mins prior to hair washing, whatever you have time for. I also use Philip Kingsley Body Building Shampoo and Moisture Balancing Conditioner and alternate with the Liz Earle shampoo and conditioner.

I am also taking collagen tablets, which I think has helped. I try not to wash my hair too much and definitely not daily.

There have been a couple of very similar threads recently, I can't do links on this device but you'll find them with the advanced search function.
I am a bit older than you and have found co-washing v helpful. Also take biotin and eat good fats and protein. Low iron can mess up hair, I was anaemic in my early 20s and suffered partial alopecia. I would prioritise getting your levels up.

Thank you all for the tips! I haven’t tried any of those brands so will give them a go. I feel like it’s a combination of low ferritin and hormonal upheaval for sure. I wish I could see some results with the ferritin but it’s just not budging. My overall level of iron is nearly in the normal range though so that’s good. T god I had really thick hair to begin with as I dread to think what it would be like now if I didn’t Shock

Hi OP, I lost a lot of hair when I had a thyroid condition. Once that was sorted they then realised my iron levels were very low. I took iron tablets and they did make a difference but it did take about 6 months. I remember feeling very down about my hair but it did recover. How long have you been on the iron tablets?

I am now post menopausal and have struggled with my hair feeling a lot dryer. I have found not washing it as much has helped. It does mean I put my hair up for a couple of days but I stretch it as far as I can and have found my hair is more like it used to be when I wash it. the menopause and peri menopause plays havoc with our bodies.

washing it not as much

The Elasticizer really helped me too.

I’ve been taking iron for 6 mts and Its definitely made a difference but it’s slow going. I initially thought it was my thyroid but the test results are consistently fine. I’ll try washing it less and see how that goes !!
