they are so much thicker than normal nails, and if your nails grow anything like mine after a couple of weeks you will have huge gaps between your cuticle and the nail... it will cost you a fortune to keep them maintained, if one pops off then you will need to get it fixed asap which will make it "newer" than the rest.

They look fake, utterly and totally wreck your nails and cost a fortune in time and money..... sorry thats just my opinion

Gobbledigook · 30/04/2007 21:14

I've got sculptured acrylic nails and I love them. They look natural and they are so hard wearing they very, very rarely break.

I'm not bothered about the nail underneath - if you had them taken off then your new nail would grow just as normal. Plus, they only get wrecked if you prise them off rather than soaking in acetone as you are supposed to!

I wouldn't give up mine for anything. I hate untidy nails.

Gobbledigook · 30/04/2007 21:15

I have mine re-done every 2 weeks so I don't have huge gaps between cuticle and nail.

hex · 30/04/2007 21:20

I have had them done once - and would again for a special evening. I don't think they look THAT natural during the day actually tho at night you couldn't tell they weren't my own. your own nail does grow quite quickly, especially with the sun now, so you would need to get them infilled (filling the gap between cuticle and nail) which doesn't cost quite as much as new ones, but still expensive. The gap started showing with me after a week and a half, and then of course they do look fake.
To be honest, depends on your lifestyle. It's hard to pick things like buttons, small coins up I think - unless there's a knack which I never got, and they are thicker than your own nails. Hopeless for dealing with an 18 mth old.

oh, and my nails did look bad after I got them off - a bit discoloured

It totally depends what colours you have whether they look fake or not. My friend has the same ones but she has 'porn star' white for the tips and the pink bit is quite a bright pink. THey don't look anything but fake. I have a much, much lighter pink so it's actually just the colour of my nail and the white is not a bright white - again, more like the colour of a real nail.

I suppose the only thing that gives away that mine are not real is the shape because I have them quite 'square'. Having said that, nearly everyone says 'wow, I thought they were your real nails'.

I have mine done becuase it's the only way I can have decent nails after 33 years of biting them. I've had them for the last 6 months or so and love them. Mine are really quite short, and rounded, so they do look like my real nails as long as you don't examine closely, then the thickness gives them away. But i like the feel of thickness, and now I am used to them can do pretty much everything I could with my own - doing up necklace clasps is a bit tricky still.

I always wear a dark coloured polish, and do an extra topcoat myself every other week, then get them infilled the other week.

I love them and totally agree with Gobbledigook on this one. They don't have to look unnatural depending on the polish you use. They look much better than chewed, cracked, yellow natural nails. I pay £28 for full set and £15 for infills.

cheeryface · 01/05/2007 21:11

i don't think dh will like the price, £15 a fortnight for the in fills is quite a lot isn't it

I pay £20 every 2 weeks for my infills but she practically files them down and starts from scratch again - she doesn't just fill in the gaps.

I don't even feel like mine are thick. I can do anything with them. I've had them on for over 2 years now though.

Mine are short too prufock. Couldn't stand 'talons'!
