Hiring a seamstress to make baby clothes

So I've had an idea but I don't know if it's a waste of time/money. Basically I see lots of clothes that I'd like to get for DS 3months but they're quite expensive. Could I not just buy some fabric that I like, download the pattern for the type of garment and hire a seamstress to make the garment? Possibly a number of them if there's enough fabric. Would the cost of fabric/hire/postage make this not worth my while? I feel as if there must be something I'm missing here! Has anyone done this before?

I sew, if you paid me the nmw for making the clothes then it would significantly be cheaper for you to buy from Primark. The pattern laying, cutting, pressing and sewing can be quite time consuming.

I mean NMW hourly rate

Making one-off baby clothes, which are small and fiddly, would take an experienced dressmaker quite a long time, that's probably going to be the biggest cost.

I reckon it will be a massive waste of time and money. At that age your DS will have grown out of then before you know. There must be many places to buy nice, inexpensive baby clothes.

Neolara · 31/01/2018 17:22

You could but it would be very expensive (bitter experience of trying to make my dcs clothes.....)

FleurWeasley · 31/01/2018 17:22

Some baby clothes are simple, why not teach yourself? Show me what you like and I can suggest some patterns! X

GimbleInTheWabe · 31/01/2018 18:13

Thanks everyone for the useful feedback. You're probably right @blueskyinmarch as DS is already in 6-9months, is there an age where growth plateaus a bit, when clothes would have the most use? Or am I just kidding myself?!
I'd love to learn @FleurWeasley but as I'm in a One bed flat there's already no room, especially for a sewing machine etc.
Thank you for the offer @GlorianaBanana, I'll bear that in mind as this is something I'm going to have to out a bit more thought in to it I think ha. I was thinking of thinks like romper suits, vests and leggings so nothing particularly fiddly (though I have no idea what I'm talking about really obviously!)

I sew a lot, including commissioned baby stuff. It’s really time consuming as it’s small, even if it’s simple it still takes longer than uou think it would.

Could you hand sew? Or get a kids machine, which would be fine for that amount of stuff.

Almostthere15 · 31/01/2018 18:23

I sew, but baby clothes are so fiddly and usually require a stretch jersey which is harder to sew and buy in small quantities because market stalls and the like don't seem to stock it very much. So I don't think it would be cost effective for things like vests and leggings?
