Hair dye not covering grey

Just spent £50 having my hair coloured and I can see a definite difference where the colour hasn't taken properly on the roots. I've just had to blend some root touch up powder on it.

So fed up as this is happening every time now. Sad Hairdresser has suggested going lighter and having highlights to make the roots less obvious when they come through.
I'm not keen though, because highlights are high maintenance - mind you, so is the white stripe on my roots a week after colouring!

What can I do? I'm just not ready to be grey and I don't mind how much it costs, but if the dye isn't even 'taking' on the grey, can it even be done?

I’m pretty grey Sad I get brilliant coverage with majirel by L’Oréal. You can find the instructions online and you can buy from salon suppliers. I had it bayalaged at a salon and between salon visits I touch up roots myself to keep costs down.

I’d try the best salon you can afford (look for someone into colour) and take it from there. Grey coverage should be very possible. I’ve gone lighter but stayed brunette. The stripe of regrowth will always reappear and the least contrast you have between the grey and the salon colour the less obvious regrowth is.

I look forward to a point in time when i’m grey and proud!!

I’ve had to move away from Nice n Easy. It just doesn’t cover mine. I might get it done at a salon for my 40th.

I have a thick silver streak through the front of my head and a few patches on the sides but not that many elsewhere but it drives me insane so feel your pain op.
I have recently grown my hair out from a short pixie style. It's currently sat just above my shoulders but I can not get the colour right. The last hairdressers I used just made a mess of it. Highlights not close enough to my root to cover it. Prior to that the base colour they used was too dark which made regrowth root look worse - total waste of money.
I have been doing my root with a nice and easy semi permanent dark ash blonde while the roots still have peroxide but I've just decided I'm sick of doing that too and booked in with a different salon, after explaining what my issues are, to see what they can do.
If I still hate it then the frigging lot is getting cut off again. I'd happily box dye it platinum and/or silver because I knew I would be getting any damage done chopped off on a regular basis.
I just don't think I'm meant to have long hair.

Another recommendation for majirel.

I use 5.1 cool cover - so a light Ash brown (it's actually a mid brown).
It covers the greys really well and overtime where I'm grey it goes a lighter brown /dark blonde colour so gives a kind of highlighted effect.

It's much easier to apply than box dyes especially if you use a cream peroxide and use a proper dye brush.

I was having this problem for a while, the combination of a few greys & my natural red hair was making my roots very very stubborn for hair dye to take hold, I was struggling to find a hair dye that actually covered them. The only one that seems to do the trick for me is the Schwarzkopf Poly Colour Tint - £2 from either wilks, sainsburys & I think asda. Not a huge shade range but I usually go for natural brown or medium brown. You don't get a conditioner with it but it's no biggie. The only downside is that it does tend to wash up a bit after time, but most permanents do. Both browns are nice natural shades, no reddish tones to them. I've yet to find a semi that will cover my roots!

The best coverage for grey hair is a flat colour. By flat colour I mean a basic number shade, so for a medium brown you would choose 5, and just 5 with no tones (such as 5.5 which is chestnut brown). Also resistant grey can be pre softened before colour application. To do this you would apply the peroxide (6%) unmixed directly to your roots with a Bush. Do not rinse. Blow dry this in place. Then apply your colour. You can also try using a higher peroxide like 9 or 12%, which is usually used to lighten hair, but it can work well on greys too.
