What should I wear on the first day of my new job?

I start a new job on Thursday, it’s a finance roll in an office for an NHS subsidiary company and I’ve no idea what to wear. I tried to clock people’s outfits when I was in the office for my interview and when I went in with my documents but there was such a range from full suits/pencil dress and jacket to someone in leggings and a tunic. I’d ideally like to be somewhere in between, I’m usually pretty good at business casual but I’ve been off work on mat leave and living in jeans an t shirts so my mind is drawing a blank when it comes to officewear and I don’t want to get it wrong on the first day

Forgot to add that most of my pre preg work clothes either don’t fit, are really old or I just don’t like anymore I bought a few new bits for interviews but I’m basically starting from scratch, going shopping tomorrow so any suggestions would be great and yes I know I’ve left it right to the last minute Blush

I would go with smart black trousers, straight leg or pencil leg, a smart/casual top, round or v neck and a smart/casual jacket but one without buttons so it doesn’t look too suit like ( monsoon and M&S do these kind of jackets)

A small heal shoe or smart flats.

That is a good in between look.

Good luck with new job.

When in the office I like to wear a casual dress- see Hush/ Next with opaques and brogues for in between corporate and casual. I sometimes see others in leggings and tunics and I think they don't look very professional, I don't listen as much to people who can't be arsed to make an effort (judgey Blush)always air on the side of formal when in doubt though OP, I've got some formal 'office wear' which I wear less regularly with a cardigan/ Coatigan over the top to dress down a bit & whip off cardi if needed for big meetings etc

Dark coloured dress, opaques, flat ankle boots? I would go to Oliver Bonas or somewhere if I didn't want to frighten the horses. Whistles Lola dress also good.

I started a new job recently! Getting used to not wearing a uniform is hard

Wore a pair of navy m&s skinny stretch trousers, smart flats (nude colour from m&s), a grey v neck top and a sort of patterned kimono cardigan over the top

Today I had on the same trousers but taupe ankle boots (jigsaw cara), a dark red and navy striped crew neck top and a grey coat

Tomorrow is a Boden shirt dress with tights and flat knee high boots plus a duster jacket

The day after probably trousers, flats and a long tall Sally patterned stretch long sleeve top

I also got a hush ruched skirt which I'm yet to wear, and need the m&s trousers to come back in stock in black as they're so comfy and useful I'm getting old

As you're starting on a Thursday I would just get a couple of items to last those 2 days and then plan to shop on the weekend once you know the score.

I recently started a job and bought loads of new items, only to find out it's much more casual than I expected!

Next have some nice trousers in and also good for fine knit jumpers. I'd go with something like that - flats and possibly a drappy jacket on top.

Good coat and bag makes a good impression too. Good luck!

In my job I go to a huge amount of workplaces, and I love clothes so I notice what people wear!

A lot of people wear the black trousers/patterned top look. Personally I think that is a bit dull!

I usually wear an unusual skirt- so heavy lace, patterned etc- with a plain t shirt and a cashmere cardigan.

I used to be a jersey dress and cardigan person, but I think this look is on the way out. It is super comfortable though, and smart at the same time.

I still have a few dresses I wear. In the summer I wear a cotton dress with a cardigan. I have 2 beautiful Cos dresses for when I have to be smarter, as they are both quite structured.

It is a long time since I have seen a woman in a full suit- apart from lawyers and in high profile meetings.

Much as I loathe the woman, Theresa May wers gorgeous clothes I think.
