Old looking hair - how to make it look younger?! Pic attached

Arghhh - I hate my hair.

I’ve just had it cut into a long bob and had a few caramel highlights in but it looks so old and”classic”.

I am in my 40s but have no grey yet.

Just looking for something that won’t age me. Any suggestions? Maybe the cut is fine and I just need to dry it differently?

Be kind 😳😆

I think you should go 1.5 inches shorter, with a heavy blunt fringe, and find a styling product to help make it look smooth but wavy (scrunch dry it?)

Thank you all for your kind advice. FlowersI really do appreciate it. I’ll leave it a month or two then find a really good hairdresser and go darker. Get some product and get some movement in it. More fringe too. I do have BBH but I look like a brunette Anthea Turner too Grin. Maybe I’ll have a look at YouTube got some inspiration!

The extensions idea is intriguing as my hair is really quite thin at the front. I’m worried it might make it thinner.... anyone got any thoughts?

I think a blunt sharp cut a darker colour and I agree longer as bobs are aging so many people hit 40 or have kids then get a sensible bob

LardLizard · 29/01/2018 23:28

Deffo stop highlighting it though as it’s making it look like it’s going grey

Jon66 · 29/01/2018 23:32

Dark hair can accentuate the aging skin, far kinder is to go lighter. Have you thought about blonde, strawberry blonde or dirty blonde?

IndigoMoonFlower · 29/01/2018 23:35

I think grow it longer and go for a side parting with a longer fringe so you can style it in different ways to have several different looks.

Personally I haven't visited a hairdresser for a few years and look after my hair at home (I have done a hairdressing course though!) because I don't trust anyone else to do my hair the way I like it.

Ask for more layers so you can tousle it at the roots and at the back.

Also try a texturizing spray and something to separate the lengths. Bumble and Bumble dryspun finish is brilliant.

So is ‘Cool Girl’ by Sam McKnight. Embarrassing name though so you might keep it in the drawer rather than on your dressing table (like me).

Shmithecat · 29/01/2018 23:41

The length is awkward. Either grow it out a few more inches or get at least another 2 cut of it, tapered down from the back.

One option if your hair is thin at the front is not to have layers in the front, have it graduated and sharpe but not layered, then it gets some weight and looks thicker. However it needs to be cut and styled well and you need to keep on top of your cuts otherwise it can look frumpy as it grows out.

With the colour, I would go and have a colour consultation with a colourist, see what they say. In the meantime keep an eye out for nice hair and ask the wearer where they had it done. I saw a beautifully cut and coloured bob (nothing middle aged about it at all) and found out where she had it cut, I've lined up another salon just in case I need it.

aimees75 · 01/02/2018 20:39

RosieLig I think your colour is nice and length ok too but perhaps your hair could do with a deep conditioning treatment to restore shine?
Would it be possible to jump on the hair bandwagon and ask for advice for my hair? It’s so limp and flat. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I’m thinking a short bob and highlights or balayage but have always hated my hair and never happy with anything I do

Aimee75 is that your natural colour? It's lovely. I think a sharp bob would look good on you but loads in this thread have said it's frumpy ConfusedShock.
You might want to start your own thread as it might get confusing who is advising who Smile
