Constantly dyeing grey roots - how often do you do yours?

I do a root touch up every two weeks. The greys are just so bad! I have black hair so the greys are just so noticeable and I hate them poking through.

How often do you do yours?

How can you go for longer in between dye jobs? I’ve tried powders, josh wink pens etc but they don’t seem to last. I can’t get the hang of the L’Oréal magic spray and it comes off on my pillows which is not nice!

Snap! I had a similar thread a few days ago. I've no idea what to do apart from go lighter?

Earslaps · 26/01/2018 22:24

I was like this when I used dye. Unfortunately I developed an allergy to regular dye and I got awful lumps on my scalp and flu-like symptoms after.

So I use henna now mixed with indigo and cassia and it kind of blends in rather than covers so the roots are less noticeable. I probably dye it every 8-10 weeks now instead.

Had the same thing, dark brown hair and a massive skunk line which after 20 years of dyeing wouldn't really cover any more. Also have a widows peak hairline and looked a bit like Elvis (the rhinestone jumpsuit years) as dye stained my skin. Stopped 2 years ago and hair is thicker and shiny again. Get loads of compliments on now white/grey/salt&pepper hair. Lots of groups of Facebook for inspiration and to get through the days I feel old!! Would recommend and wish I'd just embraced the grey at 18 when it first appeared.

be brave go grey
it will not hurt

I do mine every 3-4 weeks, in between I use colour wow powder which I find good, it just takes a minute or two when I'm doing my make up.

I agree it's a pain, but I am not at the stage of 'embracing my greys'!

londonista · 27/01/2018 10:56

I do mine every 3 - 4 weeks and a full head recolour every 8 weeks. I manage inbetween times with the spray around my hairline.

Last year my hairdresser asked me to take part in a training day as my hair was very over-processed and going a bit green! They stripped out old colour and redid it. Incredibly vibrant but I don't think it lasted as long as the box ones.

I now go back once a year to have my colour "reset" professionally with an actual colourist. It might be worth getting an opinion on managing the roots? Sounds like you need to gradually go a bit lighter with some lowlights?

Really not ready to go quietly on this either! Grin

Whenever I send my mum a photo of me with the kids she never fails to point out how aging my roots are!

ScreamingValenta · 27/01/2018 11:20

About once a month, but they start to show before that Sad - I just can't face doing it more often. All my grey is at the front so it's really obvious.

Grohlidays · 27/01/2018 11:32

I don't consider not dyeing to be going quietly - it's going fiercely!

londonista · 27/01/2018 11:46

Grohl... you've obviously never been mistaken for your child's grandmother...! 😔

PuppyMonkey · 27/01/2018 11:52

I also use the colour wow thing, or you can get cheap versions from the likes of Superdrug as well.

I find them really quick and easy and never noticed anything coming off on my pillows. Can usually leave it 4 weeks between dyes.

Lentilbaby · 27/01/2018 11:56

Oh OP, I feel your pain 😔 It’s so bloody annoying isn’t it? I have started using the L’Oreal spray but hate how it makes my naturally shiny hair so matt and dull. I don’t know what to do other than dye it every 4 weeks at the very latest (roots look pretty awful by this point). Would consider going lighter but then I get horrible dark brown roots grow through which doesn’t look good like blonde hair with roots does 😫

Sitranced · 27/01/2018 11:59

When I got to the having to dye it every 2 weeks stage I stopped and let it grow out.

Abouttoblow · 27/01/2018 12:03

I have mine done every 4 weeks and use the Charles Worthington spray in between. I found that if I spray it on when my hair is wet and then blow dry this stops it transferring to hands, pillows etc.

GiveMePrivacy · 27/01/2018 12:03

L'Oréal castings, applied to roots only, every 2-3 weeks. I ignore what it says on the box about working through the hair for the last 5 mins as this makes the ends too dark, and only apply to roots. It leaves my hair beautifully shiny and in great condition.

I have (had) dark hair and very silver roots. Absolutely not ready to go grey. I may follow my nan's example and get to 80 with implausible hair Grin. It's just not fair. My mum is 60 with barely any grey in her dark hair, but I got my first silver hairs before 20 and by about 40 it was all silver.

I think silver hair can look great, especially if you put effort into make up and styling etc. I don't put effort into those things, so a 2-3 weekly dye job gives me a lot of value as a pick-me-up.

rightknockered · 27/01/2018 12:24

I use Clairol root touch up, usually every two weeks. I get lazy sometimes though and just use an old mascara to touch up the bits that show by my ears Blush
