Nail under acrylic came away. Nurse advised going to A&E. Is that right?

Weeks and weeks ago I bent my nail back and it’s come away from the bed. I wrapped it and went back to the nail tech who cut the acrylic short.

It’s still not healed and doesn’t feel great so I popped to open surgery today to show the nurse and she has said I have to go to A&E and treat it there??

Does anyone have experience of a nail coming off under acrylics and if so how did you fix it?

No advice but that sounds so painful. I hope you get it sorted soon.

Coconutspongexo · 25/01/2018 21:32

No you don’t need to go to a&e with this. I can’t believe a nurse advised that especially with how overwhelmed a&es are atm.

Is the nail completely off now?

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 25/01/2018 21:33

Thanks Pink it was slightly painful, to say the least Grin I’m finding it hard to believe I have to go to A&E tomorrow, feel a bit silly really so wondered if there was another option.

How much of the nail is left?

ForestFrump · 25/01/2018 21:41

Minor injuries before A&E.
I think that nurse was having a shit day or something. I personally would be too embarrassed to turn upto A&E with a nail injury.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 25/01/2018 21:48

The nail tech cut it down to my finger tip. I think I’ll go back and just ask them to take the acrylic off.

Not that I like to do it but I can push the tip of the nail and it lifts the whole nail off the bed.

I’m mixing covering with a plaster and leaving it uncovered but if I catch it it lifts right up again.

You just trim it to where it’s detached. If it’s completely detached it can take up to like 5-6 months to completely grow back.

The Accident and Emergency department is for major, life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

You should only go for:

Loss of consciousness

Acute confused state and fits that are not stopping

Persistent, severe chest pain

Breathing difficulties

Severe bleeding that cannot be stopped

Not a bloomin' nail coming off!! What a ridiculous suggestion from that nurse! No wonder we have people dieing in ambulances if medical professionals are recomending going to bloody A&E for something like this!!!

Having said that, OP, it sounds horrible and awfully painful! You poor thing! You have my upmost sympathy!!! Owch!! And you also have my upmost respect for being so sensible and using your common sense instead of rushing down!!

I hope your finger feels better soon and you have some darn pretty nails to compensate your poor nail! Really feel for you!!

Stop having acrylic nails.
I don't think you need to go to A&E but I would cover it with a plaster. It's probably better to let it come off. If it's caused by an injury it should heal.
If it's because of a fungal infection go to A&E.
It will take about 6 months to grow back.

sirlee66 · 25/01/2018 21:58

Apologies, my phone app hasn't posted my post with all spaces/paragraphs so there's no full stops or anything! It doesn't make much sense! Hopefully you will get the jist though!!

ShakeTheDisease · 25/01/2018 22:02

Is there a walk in or minor injuries centre anywhere near you? That would seem more appropriate than A&E! They can then advise you on caring for it - though it'll probably come down to sticking things over it until the whole nail grows out enough to come off.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 25/01/2018 22:05

Our health board doesn't have walk-in centres or minor injuries. It's your GP or A&E. Hopefully the OP won't have to wait weeks for a GP appointment.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 25/01/2018 22:07

I wonder if I should try and soften it with warm salt water before trying to cut it down to lessen the pain?

The nurse said it is infected and needed treating in A&E, they closed our walk in centres ages ago but I just can’t see why.

It’s sore to touch and I type a lot for work so it’s slowing me down but it’s just a nail at the end of the day!

I used to be a nail tech, can you post a pic?

dancingqueen345 · 25/01/2018 22:08

I did this a couple of weeks ago (stupidly playing netball with acrylic talons on) and it was horrificly painful for a few days and then it just subsided.

The nail reattached itself to the nail bed and I've actually managed to pick the acrylic off myself this evening without too much pain (which I know I shouldn't do but I lost one so needed them all off!).

Def not an a&e job!

JennyOnAPlate · 25/01/2018 22:14

If it’s infected it needs treating. The nurse said go to a&e and I would think she knows better than random non medically qualified people on mumsnet.

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 25/01/2018 22:17

If it's infected you can get antibiotics from your GP.
But...I see this sort of thing every day in my A&E. This week I have also seen 20 people with minor viral illnesses and 1 person with a wart of their finger.....
