Please help me become the woman I want to be - shoes!

I need your help!

I've decided its time I learnt to walk in heels. Currently I only wear flat shoes simply because I cant walk in heels. At all. I can manage a low wedge.

So my friend said I needed to get a pair of heels I love and wear them around the house (luckily I work from home).

Can you help me find my first ever pair of heels to love?

She said i should start with a decent heel height right off the bat. She said not to go for a stilleto heel but something slightly chunkier.

FYI I am tall and have long and very skinny legs (dont hate me). Because of this she said to really avoid anything chunky or clunky as it would look weird.

So what kind of shoe isn't clunky but doesn't have a stilleto heel?!

Also, I have really narrow feet.

And finally I love the metallic thing, particularly silver. Realise this trend may not be continuing this spring but if anyone has spotted any...

Please let me know your advice or if you have specific shoes to recommend!

Get a pair of mid heeled boots. Like these
Heeled boots are much easier to walk in than heeled shoes.

You think people would "hate you" because of your long skinny legs??? Interesting way of asking for help.

I’m exactly the same! Every year my NY resolution is to become a proper adult and learn to walk in heels. I’ve bought a pair of heeled boots and keep meaning to start wearing them round the house - daft as it sounds I have a treadmill and I thought I might try walking on that with them so I can hold on to something and try going at different speeds etc. Very keen to hear if anyone has any other tips!

@AnaViaSalamanca
It was just a way of saying its not a humble brag just a fact that will determine what kind of shoes people can recommend to me.

@MadisonMontgomery
Totally! I dont want to wear heels often but it would be nice to have the option you know? Plus because im tall I feel like it looks way worse to be staggering around compared to someone shorter. The treadmill idea isn't a bad one actually. I've found a pair of sandals that look good although my friend did advise me it would be easier to start with closed shoes. Maybe something like the boots posted above

Get something that holds tight to your foot, you will feel a lot more stable. I learned using shoes like these and these

Hardly anyone wears heels anymore except at weddings and Ascot so I don't think it's a huge problem. I can't be arsed with them.

PasDeDeux · 24/01/2018 13:10

I have long skinny legs and wear chunky heels? They are honestly the only type of heels I can manage without being in major discomfort after 5 minutes.
Have you had a look at simple chelsea boots with a block heel? Something like this:

Can't your friend recommend some as it seems to be all her idea.

EnidButton · 24/01/2018 14:38

^meant in the nicest possible way. Grin It's just she sounds bossy and annoying.

I think you're swimming against the tide of fashion by deciding to go for stilettos at the moment. If you love them and feel good in them and want to wear them then that's fine, of course, go ahead and embrace your newly spiky style! But there are easier options that are more on-trend right now.

Most of the heels I've seen around recently are chunky. In particular, low cut ankle boots with chunky heels (of various heights), an updated version of courts with block heels, and I've seen some block-heeled brogues as well. Chunky heels are much more stable, easier to walk in, and more comfortable.*

Boots are a good place to start, because they tend to fit securely around your foot, so they feel stable and you can't walk out of them. I've been wearing heeled ankle boots at work through this winter. Once you're comfortable walking around the house, an office is a good place to try out new shoes, if your job is mostly desk-based like mine. If I'm expecting to walk any distance then I wear flats with a decent sole (boots, trainers, proper loafers), though.

*IMO, obvs.
