Can anyone recommend a good brush for thick, curly hair?

Not sure if I'm in the right place, but I want to buy a hairbrush for my son who has lovely thick curly long hair.

My hair is fine, so not really sure what the best hairbrush might be for him.

My DD's hair is thick and curly and we don't brush it. We wash and condition it....sometimes don't use shampoo as it's so drying on thicker, curly hair.

Then when the conditioner's in, we detangle with fingers...or an afro comb if it's very tangled. She's Caucasian though...her hair's not an afro but we find afro combs work well.

Then we rinse it and let it alone. It's the best way to get defined curls. Brushing invites frizz.

Don't brush it !!! I don't own a hairbrush!!

sportyfool · 23/01/2018 13:34

I will add I use my fingers .

SinglePringle · 23/01/2018 13:35

I have thick hair, described as ‘unruly’ by my hairdresser! I tame it by brushing it when wet with a Tangle Teazer Thick and Curly. Longer and thicker prongs than a normal one.

Rshard · 23/01/2018 13:35

Same, I use my fingers when my hair’s been conditioned

Temporaryanonymity · 23/01/2018 13:35

I have similar hair. I have never brushed it.

specialsubject · 23/01/2018 13:36

Yes, never brush curls. You can't get shine on curls and brushing just makes a frizzball. Comb and conditioner, and plait at night to reduce pain.

My son has lovely thick curly long hair. We use a Tangle Teezer - only when it's wet - after shampoo and conditioning. Brush tangles out when wet, let dry naturally, and don't brush again till you wash it again.

Thick curly hair here, and I use a wide tooth comb when my hair is full of conditioner. Then towel dry with a microfiber towel. I put products in and create curls with my fingers and leave to dry. I never use a hairbrush, if I did I'd look like I'd have a hay stack on my head.

TheBlowersDaughter · 23/01/2018 13:46

Thanks all. I think I might get him the tangle teezer and suggest that he combs through with conditioner. I should add that he is 17 and only brushes it (himself) when wet.

Think he might be a bit Hmm at the idea of plaiting!

Why? If he is a boy with long hair then he clearly isn't that worried about being a bit different.

TheBlowersDaughter · 23/01/2018 14:04

He prefers a man bun - these things are very important to teenagers apparently.

Tell him not to brush it! As PPs have said, it wrecks them and makes them bushy which might be why he always wears it up. My dd is a curly. Same as everyone else I learned to leave it completely alone and tangle tease just the tangled bits when wet and her curls have become spectacular.

AnnaMagnani · 23/01/2018 14:20

Never ever brush curly hair! Tell him to use enough conditioner that he can put his fingers through it in the shower to completely detangle it.

That's it. If he really wants, he can use an Afro comb. But honestly fingers should be enough.

TheBlowersDaughter · 23/01/2018 14:45

He wears it up because that is how he likes it. Not sure he's interested in creating spectacular curls. He just uses my brush ( that I use on wet hair) and I wanted to get him something more suitable.

A wet brush, from amazon. Doesn't tug at all and doesn't break the hair Grin

MikeUniformMike · 23/01/2018 14:51

Afro comb.

TheBlowersDaughter · 23/01/2018 14:53

Thanks 100, I like the look of the wet brush comb as well.

Tangle teaser - you can get one for thick/curly hair. Highly recommended! Grin

robertaplumkin · 23/01/2018 18:57

don't brush curly hair. it's free.

TheBlowersDaughter · 23/01/2018 21:34

Me: AIBU to buy my son a hairbrush?

MN S&B: yes! Don't let him brush his curly hair!

Me: But he's 17, can't he decide?

MN: No! Curly hair must never be brushed, stop him immediately! Let it flow into spectacular curls.

Me: Oh. Okay then.

problem?

Alwaysinmyheart · 24/01/2018 11:56

Haha!

SukiTheDog · 24/01/2018 18:00

Be careful using a Tangle Teezer. DS had one and it was snapping him shoulder length, wavy (and very thick) Hair. I splashed out on a Mason Pearson men’s brush which had been good for him.

TheBlowersDaughter · 24/01/2018 19:49

Thanks @SukiTheDog. MP brushes are little beyond the budget. I think it will be the wet brush comb.
