I have recently fully qualified as a GP.
I feel like I should smarten up a bit now I'm older and in a more senior position. I still look like a med student!
I usually wear black skinny jeans or straight leg cotton trousers (more like chinos than suit trousers) with flat pumps and a blouse or t shirt (smarter cut, plain cotton t shirts, not bumming round the house ones!).
How can I gradually smarten this up a bit? I don't want to go overboard, I have some GP colleagues who dress very smartly but my practice is more laid back - I'd look strange there in proper business dress. I also don't want it to be too noticible that I'm trying as I am easily embarrassed.
I don't have to have short sleeves but need to be able to push any sleeves over my elbow if needed. And need outfits without too many dangly bits!!!
I'm a size 14-16, 5ft5, quite big boobs - can't really wear buttoned shirts. Happy to spend some money on a few bits but not loads as TTC so hopefully won't be wearing them for long!! Think John Lewis prices rather than selfidges Grin
TIA, im a bit clueless tbh.

I'd go for casual blazers (try H&M) and smart jeans if you are allowed. Or your chinos are still good (Zara are good for these). Buy nice Lycra tops (the best you can afford) and chunky jewellery. Pumps or ankle boots.

Winter try thick tights and a mini skirt (well a little shorter than knee length) and knee boots with a contrasting or toning blazer.

Have a different colour blazer to trousers to make it less suit like.

Not tried it myself but this sounds like a job for John Lewis' personal shopper service? Worth a go if you can spare the time?

CantChoose · 21/01/2018 12:48

Some blazers are a good idea elmosmum - and I can wear those with some of my existing clothes which will be a good spruce-up without looking too different from usual.
I have been thinking of a JL personal shopper for ages, devil, I think I'm a bit scared to be honest as I feel quite frumpy and clueless - I think I'd feel a bit intimidated. I might summon up the courage though!

Printed dress with opaque tights and ankle boots or ankle skimmer fitted trousers with a blouse and ballet flats.

ElfrideSwancourt · 22/01/2018 08:16

Congratulations op on your qualification! Having worked in a similar field, could you swap the skinny jeans out for smarter trousers?
Also think personal shopper would be a good idea.

thesandwich · 22/01/2018 08:20

I did personal shopper at JL and she was brilliant!( I am not trendy and much older than you!😉)

CantChoose · 22/01/2018 19:33

Haha thanks, thesandwich! I'm just being silly about it really...
I did used to wear more dresses when I was slimmmer gillybobs, I think I haven't really accepted my new width shape!
Elfride thank you :) I have been wearing the skinnies as my emergency back up more recently really.

I think the resounding vote is for a JL personal shopper session. I have a £75 voucher too which is a good start.

I found it a real treat( and I hate clothes shopping😉😉)

Not sure I agree with the John Lewis advice. My father, sister and DSIL are all GP Principals and they all dress down, not up, at work.

Everything you buy should be able to go in the washing machine - for hygiene and because you run the risk of encounters with other people's personal fluids. Don't wear anything you love at work as you may need to throw it in the bin.

Look at Dorothy Perkins, Wallis, Uniqlo, New Look for dresses and tailored separates. Wear a Zara jacket over whatever casual trousers you'd wear anyway and you're fine.

Cheap and comfortable shoes. Hush Puppies? SIL swears by New Look as many of their shoes have rubber soles so feel like trainers.

Uniqlo do a shirt that is pure cotton but sewn like a generous rugby shirt so you don't run the risk of popping a button during an examination.

DSIL is a very style conscious 30 something GP. She normally goes for Gap type chinos and jersey tops, or jersey dresses and boots, basically stuff that is semi smart but easily washed as a PP said!
