M&S Credit Note expired

CharlotteLV · 20/01/2018 16:04

I discovered last week - in store - that my M&S Credit Card Voucher had gone out of date just 10 days earlier. (Got it by returning a gift with a gift receipt one year and 10 days before.) The store staff were sympathetic but Customer Services have shown me ZERO mercy and flexibility over this. So, they get to keep the money, and I have nothing to show for it. I've asked nicely, I've explained, I've complained, I've threatened to cancel my M&S credit card...nothing but polite refusals in return, and no compensation of any kind. It's damaged my loyalty to M&S in a way I never thought possible. It's outrageous and I'm furious!

You can't be that loyal if you haven't shopped them in over a year, and even then when you did you returned the item Confused

Massive over reaction to an error of your own. Shit happens.

spiney · 20/01/2018 18:42

Sh**t. Glad you pointed that out! I have a gift card lurking in my wallet.

Shopgirl1 · 20/01/2018 18:43

ObiJuanKenobi, yes of course, that’s why I said there was not much she could do about it...

citybzg · 20/01/2018 18:43

Ah ignore the above, you didn't even shop there a year ago, it was a gift return!!

I hardly think you can shout too loudly about your loyalty to a shop you don't shop in!

buckeejit · 20/01/2018 18:46

I don't think yabu- I understand they need to know how much they 'owe' but amazon gift vouchers last for 25 years or something absurd. It's not good enough & they should have a grace period of a few months anyway. It isn't fair even if it's their rules

sportyfool · 20/01/2018 18:51

They have to balance the books though so having thousands in owed money doesn't work for business . 🤷‍♀️

spiney · 20/01/2018 18:55

It's very 'computer says no'. And not fair.

And what makes me furious is the big corporation keeps the money. And the individual loses.

ObiJuanKenobi · 20/01/2018 19:24

@spiney they didn't used to though! I used to be a customer service supervisor at a Waitrose when I was at 6th form and it changed maybe 8 years ago.. get shopping!! Grin

barefoofdoctor · 20/01/2018 19:30

Didn't M&S have to change their 'return any date' for refund/replacement to return within 30 days due to massive painstaking by customers? A year is more than fair-i'd have bought Xmas pressies with it if nothing else.

neveradullmoment99 · 20/01/2018 20:29

This. I think they should be able to show a bit of discretion. Its a big company. They have the money. You have nothing. I think it is unfair. I do not think they should put an expiry date on it.

spiney · 20/01/2018 20:55

Obi Seriously I thought the JL ones didn't expire. I've inspected the teeny teeny writing on the back and you're totally correct. It was a gift. I will be so gutted if it's expired.

ilovecherries · 20/01/2018 21:48

I think it's so computerised that staff on the shop floor are pretty powerless. I took a Xmas gift back with the receipt (not a gift receipt, an actual receipt, paid by cash) on 14 Jan. We'd all had flu and it was the first chance I got to go back (nearest M&S about 40 miles away). It had been £60, and they would only give me the selling price on that day (£7.50) as a refund as it was 12 sodding hours past the Christmas return date. I took it back, will be able to get more than that on eBay, and if not, I'd rather donate it than accept that.

neveradullmoment99 · 20/01/2018 23:29

That is absolutely shocking Cherries
Why should any of these have an expiry date?
At the end of the day, the money has already been spent. It should NOT have an expiry date on it in any of these cases.

PNGirl · 20/01/2018 23:37

YABU. Everything not spent will get written off quarterly or at year end to balance the books. If you can't spend it in time some stores will issue a new one or let you buy vouchers to extend your time.

Ofthread · 20/01/2018 23:47

Why so many people defending this corporation and their dodgy practices? They've basically taken the money in return for absolutely nothing.

PickAChew · 20/01/2018 23:49

Poor you.

citybzg · 20/01/2018 23:53

They've basically taken the money in return for absolutely nothing.

Through the OP's actions orlackthereof

spiney · 21/01/2018 00:21

But they still got the money.

citybzg · 21/01/2018 00:25

But they still got the money.

Yes they did. Br it wasn't through their own actions. It was through the OP's lack of action. I think that makes a difference. A year is more than enough time to spend a credit note.

alotalotalot · 21/01/2018 00:29

I'd be really angry too - but at myself for forgetting.

spiney · 21/01/2018 00:31

Sorry city don't agree. And M&S have had the money from the outset.

citybzg · 21/01/2018 00:37

And M&S have had the money from the outset.

Yes they have. Because an item was purchased, an item which the OP chose to return. OP then chose not to use the credit note for over a year. The OP has lost out here because of their actions, not because of the shops.

spiney · 21/01/2018 00:48

I understand the sequence of events city. But I think the basic premise is wrong. Sort of an unfair contract. With different arbitrary rules decreed by different retailers. So what if she didn't spend the credit in a year? M&S already have pocketed the cash. Now they don't have to give her anything in return. Fantastic for the big company!

AntiHop · 21/01/2018 09:18

I agree op. It's really mean of them. I shop in m and s regularly. I had a voucher that I'd forgotten about. Been in several times whilst the voucher was still valid. I contacted customer services but they refused to do anything.
