Dry/damaged hair saviours??

harrietsoton · 18/01/2018 18:46

My hair is colour processed, heavily styled and quite damaged. It still looks okay but in reality it falls out/breaks off at a ridiculous level. (Even washing my hair, my hair clumps out more than it should). It can’t grow past my current mid length either as the ends quickly turn into straw and need to be cut off.

I’m wondering if anyone has any product saviours that have worked for them? I’m planning on going into Selfridges, John Lewis & my hair salon tomorrow after work and check their ranges. I think I need an elasticizer or protein treatment? And a very intensive mask. Any recommendations or advice for nursing my hair back to health would be appreciated!

If you can stretch your budget try a kerastraight treatment. Works wonders on hair like yours and lasts 3-4 months. It’s transformed my hair

Thank you, looks interesting. My salon actually offers the treatment so I’ll definitely discuss it with them

DancesWithOtters fab I was planning on picking that up! How long did it take for you to notice results?

I second PK Elasticiser. Use it overnight, wash off in the morning. Once a week at least.
Stop colour processing your hair or at the very least, stop lightening it (if you are) and go for semi permanent colouring.
Stop using straighteners, minimal use of hairdryer, only brush hair if you’re drying it, otherwise use fingers or a tangle teezer.
Use a conditioner every time you wash and hair oil on the ends daily.
Rescuing damaged hair is my forte Smile I’ve finally accepted my hair doesn’t like bleach and after following the above advice it is now almost waist length, quite thick and soft.

LabradorMama · 18/01/2018 19:08

Oh and Joico Intense Hydrator is a great masque

ZaraW · 18/01/2018 19:20

Elasticiser did nothing for my thick frizz prone hair. Coconut oil works well and is much cheaper.

I've been there ... honestly, you can't repair knackered hair. Your best bet is to lay off bleach, ease off on very hot straighteners and have a good cut to get rid of the bad ends. The only product that worked for me to improve the quality of my hair once I'd done all the above was coconut oil shampoo (cheaper option) or Windle & Moodie healthy hair and scalp shampoo and strengthening conditioner. Keratin blow dries, in my experience, are a quick fix but do nothing for long term health...

hollygolipo · 18/01/2018 19:34

Ps and the PK elasticiser made it much worse - just stretched my already stretched and damaged hair

ImagineAllThePeople1 · 18/01/2018 20:00

Olaplex is amazing!

Mamaohana · 18/01/2018 21:18

Elastercizer worked for me and I only ever leave it on for about 20mins, never all night. I still straighten hair daily but it is like a good hair day every day - hair is quicker to straighten, less sticking up frizzy strands and much less breakage! Worth buying the smallest size to give it a go.

somebodythinkofthechildren · 18/01/2018 21:27

Watching with interest as I'm currently trying to un-fuck my hair. I'm coming to terms with the fact that I need to stop bleaching it. Sad

Redrobinonspade · 18/01/2018 22:36

Agree with ImagineAllThePeople1- Olaplex is great stuff!

marmite157 · 18/01/2018 23:55

Castor oil mixed with jojoba or other base oil.

Loads of threads on here about it, I've been putting it on at night, towel on pillow etc and washing off in morning once a week for 3 months and my hair is in fab shape now.

DavetheCat2001 · 19/01/2018 09:31

Olaplex

Ginny70 · 19/01/2018 10:32

I've just looked up Olaplex and it has good reviews but there seem to be 3 different versions offering different things. Which number, 1,2 or 3 do you guys use?

DavetheCat2001 · 19/01/2018 11:09

Numbers 1 and 2 are treatments done in-salon only. You can book in for a treatment, quite a few places do it now.

The number 3 is for home use. I got some this week and used it yesterday (had my hair ombre'd last week and had an Olaplex treatment at the same time), and I think my hair looks better.

I have read that the more you use it, the better it gets. It actually mends bonds within the hair rather than just coating it with silicones like most conditioners.

Ginny70 · 19/01/2018 11:24

Thanks Dave. They're selling all 3 on Amazon, separately and in packs, which is what confused me, but I'll just get number 3.

Goldmonday · 19/01/2018 11:26

Hair mayonnaise, they sell a huge tub in boots for about £6, it is in the section for Afro-Caribbean hair and is amazing

Chchchchangeabout · 19/01/2018 11:29

My really nice hairdresser who I trust and doesn't usually try to sell me anything has recommended olaplex. I am going to have it done next time i am at the salon. As PP said, unlike other treatments it will actually repair bonds in the hair, apparently.

DavetheCat2001 · 19/01/2018 11:39

I have also started using the Loreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil shampoo and conditioner, and bought some of the actual hair oil/serum today which I am finding helps my hair look a lot softer and shinier.

Laurie22 · 19/01/2018 11:41

I have 4 treatments that will seriously change your hair( I know I sound like a walking advert!!!) I buy them all on Amazon and so much cheaper than salon treatments ( have tried many!)

Olaplex No. 3 at home treatment. This is a treatment you use before shampoo.

Aphrogee 2 step protein treatment: it's an oil protein treatment that you blow-dry into your hair until it's hard and then rinse out! Amazing!

Aphrogee two minute reconstructing treatment: protein conditioner.

L'Oréal serie expert repair mask: lovely hydrating treatment.

I use all these on a rotating basis and I love them!!!

Luckingfovely · 19/01/2018 11:42

Olexplex in-salon is the absolute game changer. My platinum hair is silk not straw after a year of it. Long-term, I think it's the only thing that really works. I don't put much store by anything you can buy in shops having any real long term impact. Although Elasticizer does make it feel a bit nicer the day after.

DotCottonDotCom · 19/01/2018 11:46

Olaplex is utter pish in my opinion, and I have used all variations as a stylist. No 3 is heavily diluted version of no1.

Joico Intense Hydrator has been okay in my experience

Coconut oil really is worthy and you can even use it before bleach application.
