Bleached Hair Won't Take Colour - Help

Hi everyone, if anyone has any advice I'd be eternally grateful as my hair is driving me nuts!

I have a natural grey/white chunk developing in my fringe, a few other grey scattered through the rest of my hair but not enough to warrant dying it yet, apart from the patch at the front which (I felt) needed taking care of.

I thought I'd bleach a wedge of my fringe that contains the grey and then tone it to silvery/white so that it was more of a feature, the bleaching process went fine but it will NOT tone!

I have tried purple shampoo, both washing my hair with it and leaving it on for around 15 mins and applying the shampoo while my hair is dry and leaving it for 30 minutes. It made a slight difference but certainly not my intention. So I bought some proper toner, supposedly this would tone the blonde lavender but it's also barely touched it! My wedge is slightly less yellowy but no where near silvery/white/grey (I'll take any combo of that at this point) it just looks bleached.

Does anyone know where I am going wrong? I'm starting to think that it's going to need re-bleaching to get it lighter but am reluctant due to potentially damage.

I just am amazed that I can't get it to pick up any time or colour at all...

You need to use a high lift tint with 40 vol developer. Such as Koleston or Majirel. Look at Capital hair online or Sallys.

TheMightyPigsbum · 16/01/2018 16:11

Is that to lighten my hair further and then tone it afterwards again demonsdo?

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated :)

The high lift will cover the grey hair, as bleach won't do this. What is your natural colour?

Frequency · 16/01/2018 16:16

Do NOT use highlift on pre-lightened hair. You'll end up with wet noodle hair.

Your hair is either too porous or not light enough tone to silver. Silver is actually a really hard colour to achieve, can you afford to go to a hairdresser or training salon?

wavesandwellies · 16/01/2018 16:22

agree with frequency

hair is either too porous that the colour literally can't grab onto the hair or that it's not light enough.

if you can't afford to pay full price at a salon, see ifor you can book in on a training day. most only charge to cover the cost of the colour (usually about £10-15)

TheMightyPigsbum · 16/01/2018 16:40

It's not specifically silver that I want at this point as I am realising that that's not going to happen - I just want it less yellow. Any shade between lavender to white/grey/silvery/bluey which I can live with...my natural colour is mid brown, warm rather than cool tones I think.

I have attached a pic, hairdresser isn't an option at the moment...new business started and even the mortgage is looking precarious at this point - but that's another thread.

It's hard to say on a picture, due to lighting etc but that looks light enough, in that pic. To be toned to white or a similar colour, your hair should match the inside of a banana. If it's darker than that, it's needs re-bleaching but that is not something I would advise.

I love the L'Oreal Dialight Toners, www.google.co.uk/search?q=dialight+milkshake+toner&rlz=1C1AVNG_enGB674GB730&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=YHbHpq_QCfwA_M%253A%252C76na0i1VqhizNM%252C_&usg=__ZZMull3Ymf7P7hk4gLR0pjL4HUA%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjKwIeO99zYAhXJBSwKHbcGBDwQ9QEIOzAC#imgrc=ciESo_Y1vZkqLM: and they are formulated to cover pre-lightened hair.

You'd need to buy the L'Oreal activator cream, normally, I'd recommend a low volume but as you mentioned grey hair, I'd go with a 9 vol.

You didn't say which toner you tried using? It might be that your hair wasn't light enough for that particular toner or that it was too porous for that type. The Milkshake ones cover porous hair better but if it was porosity causing the issue, you might need to get a porosity equaliser to use pre-colouring. Goldwell do one that you can get on Amazon.

If you can find a training salon (check out local FE Colleges) that'll probably be cheaper than shelling out for the colour and the activator cream.

Thanks Frequency - very useful and I'll check out the products you've highlighted :)

I use L 'Oreal Preference in Stockholme to get a pearly silver tone to bleached hair.
It will lighten and tone your hair.

There is a colour you can get in pearl, but for the life if me i cant remeber the name of the brand
It is in a tubelike box, you mix it all in a dish provided, it is lovely, i used it but didnt realise it came so silvery, sorry i cant remember what its called, but its the only one that comes in that shaped box, boots sell it among other places,it will cover bleach
If i can find th name i will update

lovemylover · 17/01/2018 22:53

Sorry cant find the name of that colour, but preference do a platinum blonde one and Garnier do a similiar one
