What on earth do people wear to weddings these days?

I haven't been to one for a good few years (only been invited to childfree ones where we just couldn't make childcare work), but an invitation dropped through the door yesterday. Summer wedding in the frozen north.

Fascinators are a no, I believe? Are hats in?

fascinators are fine.

I need advice on this too, it's been years since I last went to a wedding.

I love fascinations. Where else can I have a beautiful big feathery creation sat on my bonce other than a wedding?!

Personally I wear Lindy bop style dresses. A Rockabilly dress with a big petticoat underneath flatters my figure.

RowenasDiadem · 14/01/2018 19:50

Fascinators not fascinations. FU autocorrect.

GlitterGlue · 14/01/2018 20:00

I love the rockabilly dresses, but they don't love me.

Googling throws up dresses a lot flouncier than I expected for a wedding.

I don't recall ever being to a wedding where anyone under the age of 50 wore a fascinator, I really wouldn't!
I have a lovely Get Cutie dress which is a 50s style but a little nicer / more expensive than lindy bop. I've worn it to lots of weddings as I know quite a few people who don't know each other!

Depending on what you mean by the "frozen north", a fascinator or hat may not be practical: the Highlands and islands are pretty windy even in the summer. However, wind is definitely a good thing as it will stop the midgies coming out!

I need help too. I have a posh London wedding in June.
I'm about a stone overweight...

I went to a wedding in Scotland in September. I wore a Phase Eight shift dress and went Full Hat (I'm 33 with thick curly hair fo fascinators disappear).

GlitterGlue · 15/01/2018 12:26

Not quite as far north as Scotland. I’m a cold arse, I’d be miserable in a thin summer dress, but don’t really suit a jacket.

Dress and coat with a hat for ceremony. Pashmina for reception, if you think you will be chilly.
I am going to a hotel wedding in August and plan to wear silk trousers and a silk shirt, no need for headgear at all.
