Are those straightening brushes worth it?

Two questions:

  1. what makes them better than straighteners?
  2. which one(s) have you tried and liked?

I’ve tried the JML one, it was rubbish. My dd liked it though as she has thick frizzy hair and it smoothed it out. She had straighteners for Christmas though so doesn’t use it any more...

ZaraW · 14/01/2018 15:44

I have the Glamoriser brush it heats up to 210 and has three lower settings. I really like them. Find them easier to use than straighteners.

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/01/2018 15:49

I got the asavea one recently and love it. I have very thick, wavy, long hair and it takes over an hour to straighten with irons so I hardly ever do it.

I’ve used the brush a few times and it’s excellent. I rough dry it as you can only use the brush on dry hair. Then do it in layers and use the brush on sections. I use it at the top temp as my hair’s so thick but only have to go over it once.

The disadvantage of the brush is you can’t get as close to the scalp as with irons but it’s not a big deal.

I really like it Smile

Polarbear46 · 14/01/2018 15:50

They arent better than straighteners ever. They dont use the pressure of clamped plates and heat escapes easier, so they won't ever come close. They will help smooth out hair but not much else.

HannaSolo · 14/01/2018 15:53

I have a Dafni one.

I love it. I have very thick long wavy hair.

Using normal straighteners takes me ages just in terms of the amount of hair I can do with each pass.

Whereas I can just brush my hair through with the Dafni in about 5 mins.

It doesn't get my hair as straight as standard straightners but tbh I quite like it that way. It's also harder to get a curl with them - but again not an issue for me.

So in my experience the main advantage is speed and ease but if you after a poker straight finish they probably aren't right for you.

GlitterUnicornsAndAllThatJazz · 14/01/2018 15:56

Thanks for the replies so far!
@HannaSolo definitely not after poker straight, just to smooth out my wavy hair and get that silky feel you get from straightening.

GlitterUnicornsAndAllThatJazz · 14/01/2018 15:56

@HannaSolo Actually I was more after that smoothed blow dry effect rather than a straightener effect

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/01/2018 15:58

That’s exactly what you’ll get from a straightening brush Smile

It DOES straighten and smooth wavy hair. I know because my hair is very wavy and that’s what it does.

butterfly198615 · 14/01/2018 15:59

I have the jml ones, I find that there not as good as any ghds or high heat straightener. My hair is super thick and not all hair straighteners work for my hair type apart from the ones above. However this brush surprised me it did get my hair straight and looked more natural, rather than sleek poker straight hair. And this is using the setting at 185 so not the 210 of 220 or normal straighteners so less heat damage and it also took less time.
The only think with this brush I am.always burning my had a way more than a hair straighter but some come with heat protective glove or you can buy them.
I like mine but wouldn't compare them to an actual hair straightener.

happymummy12345 · 14/01/2018 16:04

Personally I don't like them at all. U didn't find they worked at all. Nothing compares to straighteners IMO

GlitterUnicornsAndAllThatJazz · 14/01/2018 16:05

@AnneLovesGilbert
Awesome thanks, it was asavea I was looking at too 😊

goose1964 · 14/01/2018 16:06

I have on that allegedly straightens hair but I only ever use it for curl control.

HannaSolo · 14/01/2018 16:09

OP then I think they might work for you.

What I find is using them makes my hair look like I've had a really good blow dry.

Not poker straight but smoother and shinier. My hairstyle also seems to hold up better when I've used them. I also think they do less damage as they are quick to use and hair isn't press against super hot plates.

There's no denying though they are not really imho a replacement for a good pair of straighteners- I think it's really just a different tool.

Main plus for me is that I can really quickly dry my hair without having to do any real styling and just finish it off with the Dafni. I rarely used straighteners as it took so long and relied on inexpertly blow drying my hair. I find this so much easier and quicker on my hair type.

keepingbees · 14/01/2018 16:23

I had the JML gold one. It worked ok, hair wasn't as poker straight as with straighteners - which is what I expected, but they did smooth it out.
I didn't keep them though as I found it no quicker or easier than my straighteners, and it also seemed to dry my hair out. Once the initial glossiness had worn off, quite quickly too, my hair felt dry and frizzy.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 14/01/2018 17:36

I have got the babyliss one and I love it. My hair is quite fine though but the finish is softer and less severe than with ghds

CointreauVersial · 14/01/2018 18:05

I picked up a Babyliss one from Boots as a Black Friday deal. It is fabulous! I have fairly fine, straightish hair, but it is annoyingly frizzy at the back where it's going grey.

I'd wanted to try one for ages but didn't want to pay Dafni prices, nor did I fancy a cheapo Chinese number which might set fire to my hair.

I find it way easier and much, much quicker than straighteners (and no burns!). As others have said, it doesn't give you that poker-straight, glossy look you get from straighteners, but I'm just after smooth, straight, frizz free hair. I like the fact that you can use it to turn the hair under at the ends. The effects last until the next wash.

Hello! I don't know if you heard about Monica Davis blog but it's one of my favorite blogs. This post is perfect for you mystraightener.com/flat-iron-brush-straightener/ Also, she regularly does reviews about the best hair styling products. I use DAFNI hair straightening ceramic brush and it sure saves me time.

Nelly5566 · 04/08/2018 19:56

My husband has recently presented me with the 2-in-1 Ionic MiroPure straightener and I love it! Frankly speaking, I chose it by myself because he is clueless about such things. I shoul say, a review on therighthairstyles.com/hair-straightening-brush/ helped me a lot as it includes the description of 12 hair straightening brushes with pros and cons. Maybe someone will also find it useful!

MrsMaisel · 04/08/2018 20:31

The BaByliss Diamond Heated Smoothing and Straightening Brush works really well and heats up in an instant.

MagicFajita · 04/08/2018 20:37

I find mine bulky , and actually , it takes longer to use successfully than my Remington straighteners.

AtreidesFreeWoman · 04/08/2018 20:51

I think it very much depends on your hair type.

DSD has fine long hair and much prefers straighteners - but it doesn't take her too long to to do this and she loves the very straight look (and it suits her).

I have thick long wavy hair and I prefer a straightening brush. I have so much hair that using a standard straightener takes ages and actually doesn't look that good - it still needs a bit of body to it - and the brush just smooths my hair out enough to look good without a totally straight effect which on me just ends up looking a bit triangular given how thick my hair is.

I have a Daphni btw.

JerushaAbbott · 05/08/2018 08:20

I use steam straighteners on the first day to get rid of the frizz, but only for a few minutes so my hair keeps a wave in it rather than being straight. On the second and subsequent days it I find it hard to stop it from looking flat and slept in, so I stick my head upside down and brush it for a couple of minutes with a heated brush. It then gets its body back and keeps its wave, especially if I twist the heated brush as I do it.

I’ve got really thick, wiry, frizzy hair, bra-back length with random curls and straight bits, and my grey hairs stick out so I look as though I’m wearing a sheep on my head. Doing this makes my hair look like normal human hair.

HurricaneHalle · 05/08/2018 17:06

No. Burnt my hand so many times. It was really heavy and cumbersome. I gifted mine to a friend who wanted to try one.

timhopks22 · 06/04/2020 19:34

Auldspinster · 06/04/2020 19:40

I have the Lidl one, I like it because it doesn't make my hair poker straight, just smooths it.
