Filling in balding eyebrows

MiserableAsSin · 13/01/2018 18:57

My eyebrows started to develop bald patches in my early 30s but nothing too noticeable . Now at 34 I have really obvious gaps. My actual brow hair is dark and thick in some places making the bald patches very obvious . It's really affecting my confidence as I feel it's the most noticeable things on my face .
I am also finding it increasingly hard to rectify with makeup . Most brow products will not apply on the bald area - they just glide over not depositing any colour . The bald bits are sort of smooth/ shiny and this maybe why. I gave tried brow gels - mac, Anastasia dip brow pomade , illamasqua - they don't work . I have tried a mac brows pencil and it writes on but fades after an hour or so. I have tried the illamasqua brow cake which used to work very well till the patches got bigger and am not finding it difficult to get them to look even. Any recommendations ?- am pretty desperate .

I’ve had microblading - for almost exactly the same reason - and done well (which I think mine is), it looks great.

Gingernaut · 14/01/2018 10:43

Augmenting what's already there is always going to be eaisier than trying to replace completely missing eyebrows.

I've seen solid black eyebrows which look like they were painted on with shoe polish, but when someone showed me her tattooed eyebrows (after a brow ring left a stripe through one eyebrow), I genuinely couldn't spot it.

She did go to a tattooist though.

Fabellini · 14/01/2018 10:44

Gingernaut sort of. It’s not as permanent though because the ink doesn’t go into the skin as deeply as it does on a tattoo, so it will fade away over the course of a couple of years.

SukiTheDog · 14/01/2018 11:03

I’d try some of the many “wash off at the end of the day” products, if I were you. Going for anything permanent is a huge step. I recently bought Diego Dalla Palma Tinted Volumiser Brow Fixer. It’s one of the many, with fibres. Except, it doesn’t smudge, flake or wear off TIL I remove it, at the end of the day. M&S do it. Much better than Bobbi Brown or drug store brands. Really does “build up” sparse areas, for me.

Balding eyebrows/lashes or other hair lose can be a symptom of autoimmune disease.

Might be worth thinking about thyroid, coeliac etc (have a google of signs and symptoms), and getting tested if you think it appropriate.

It’s this one...

OP, I agree with Suki, try the wash off stuff first. I have a similar problem and have found the Benefit brow products to be really excellent. To keep the product on the bald patches for longer, I put a bit of hairspray on a cotton bud and then gently dab it over the brows. Stays in place from about 8am to 5ish most days. Usually touch up again if going somewhere after work.

I like Tarte hair and brow powder in grey (I have very dark brown hair). It's the only products I've tried that (1) is dark enough without being too black, (2) doesn't oxidise orange or yellow by the end of the day and (3) has a slightly sheer quality that allows me to fill in gaps without having to get it exactly the same shape and density on both sides iyswim. The powder finish suits me better than a pencil or liquid that you have to get just right. You can flub it a bit and it still looks good.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 14/01/2018 14:35

Rinmel standard eyebrow pencil is the best and I have used everything! Benefit ka brow over the top for a night out. Apply on top of powder

MiserableAsSin · 14/01/2018 15:07

Thanks for replies so far
I've considered micro blading but not sure if I can afford the upfront cost and also have extremely sensitive reactive skin so worried about a reaction.
Will look into the korean markers I've seen loads on eBay could you recommend a particular one ? Am also looking at the wow powder .
I've tried a powder but it applied very patchy because my brows are sooo patchy - thick in places then bald in places . Will look into the wow powder though
Have also used castor oil which made my existing hairs thicker and darker but it didn't do anything to make New hairs grow on the bald spots - also tried rapidbrow serum which did the same thing

Also I have had my thyroid checked and it was fine . No symptoms for coeliac. Just going through the other recommendations now

@SukiTheDog
am looking at the brow fixed gel you've recommended. I've noticed it has a mascara type wand - how does this work on bald area as there will be nothing to cling too- does it paint hairs on as I think this is what I need to do

Rapid brow really does work to make eyebrows grow and use Boots No 7 Beautiful Eyebrow kit for filling in the gaps while you wait for the growth. A tint and wax every 4 weeks will finish them off nicely. All these worked for me when I had sparse light eyebrows.

MiserableAsSin · 14/01/2018 15:33

@ICantFightThisFeelingAnyLonger I have gone through around 3 tubes of rapid brow . It worked well to make my existing hairs thicker but did nothing to make New hairs grow on bald spots . Am reluctant to use it again because I've noticed that when i stop using it within 2 weeks my brows start thinning again and look worse than I did before.

I totally understand where you’re coming from re price..there’s no getting away from it, microblading is expensive. However, you’ve already forked our loads on various products and haven’t found one yet that is working well for you - and even if you do find one, you’ll have to keep repurchasing.
With regards to sensitive, reactive skin - any therapist worth anything will be doing patch tests and checking your suitability before they touch your brows.

ICantFightThisFeelingAnyLonger · 14/01/2018 17:16

I had the same after first use of rapid brow...got lazy and didn't use it much and noticed thinning again. I'm on second one now and it makes such a difference to me and I have had growth in bald areas. My beautician says she had client who used 3 or 4 lots of rapid brow and eventually the thinning stopped happening and the thicker brows stayed put. I suppose we're all
different and not all products suit everyone. Good luck with your brows Smile

SukiTheDog · 14/01/2018 20:19

OP, it fills all my sparse bits but no, I’ve no bald bits at the moment.

Maybelline Brow Satin. It has a powdery end to fill your brows in, and a push up pencil end. From a supermarket near you!

MinnieMinchkin · 15/01/2018 13:08

I put a dab of castor oil over my brows and eyelashes every evening. It took a few weeks longer to have an effect than revitalash / brow which I'd used a few years earlier, but it costs significantly less. A couple of sparse areas in my brows now have hair again and my lashes are a bit longer. My understanding is that it strengthens hairs so they don't break off or fall out quite as quickly. Nothing can give growth where there is no follicle left.
