Shampoo bars

Does anyone use shampoo bars? I've very happily moved from shower gel to bar soap, and am pondering the next step to shampoo bars for my hair (which will also, hopefully, help me continue to reduce plastics this year). I'm especially interested in SLS and paraben free options.

Any recommendations?

Great thread. We’re going to work our way through the various bottles of shampoo etc then go for bars. Thank you marko2002 for all the advice about amica, I’ll definitely be giving them a go! I’m also interested in how you all store lots of different bars in the bathroom without them going all slimy?

@BellMcEnd (can't believe I just typed that)Grin a wooden raft is the cheapest/best option! You can find them for about £1.50 Most syndet bars have no preservatives this means the slime can harbour bacteria, you want to keep those puppies DRY! Not to mention that you can lose a fair amount of your expensive bar. They are expensive for a reason, they are primarily all the goodies in your expensive shampoo(except for the lush ones). Also beware cheap imports from China! These are tested on animals!

I have recently got a diatomite soap dish which is brilliant for preventing the slime. Anyone else use these?

Just switched to bar shampoo but struggling a bit with crazy dry frizzy hair. My hair is dyed blonde. Would the Argan oil work do you think?

I’ve been using bar shampoo for almost 2 years and I love it. My favourite one being odango From lush (ugly but effective and smells nice). Apparently lush are working in all their soaps and shampoo bars being SLS free ASAP so that will be even better.

I also use bar conditioner and the trick with this is to let it soak in the water whilst you wash with shampoo. It softens it a bit so you get plenty on the hair. My hair used to be so dry before I switched.

@CoperCabana I have just ordered one of those dishes after reading your post! Thanks

This is such a useful thread with loads of good suggestions. I’ve just done my first week with Funky Soap products. The shampoo is ok, although my hair looks and feels pretty rubbish at the moment but am hoping it will improve after the readjustment period. I have to say that the conditioner is completely useless - can’t get it to transfer onto my hair at all. Tried the cider vinegar rinse but amy not enjoying the salad bowl aroma! I do live in a very hard water area so might try the bicarbonate of soda idea, and also experiment with some different brands. Am determined not to go back to plastic bottles! Keep giving your good ideas !

I started using a shampoo bar about 4 weeks ago and it's brilliant! I'm using superfood-market.com/products/dy095-friendly-soap-natural-shampoo-bar-1-x-95g and am really happy with it. It lathers well, which is great, and leaves my hair squeaky clean.

My suggestion would be to rinse it really, really well - longer than you'd rinse after bottled shampoo. It took a couple of weeks for me to get the hang of it but I'm absolutely thrilled with the bar now and won't be switching back!
