Has anyone permed their hair straight?

I am so tempted, my hair is in very good condition so I think it could do take it.

I'm just worried about how it will react with my hair colours.

I did when I was 15 (25 years ago!!) - Twas a disaster!
In recent times I have used the Japanese straightening system called Yuko at a reputable salon and had that done annually for about 6 years.

Graphista · 09/01/2018 17:35

Isn't this "relaxing"? I seem to remember this being something a friend of mine had done, she's now embraced her curls and they look AMAZING. You can do it yourself at home or certain salons might still do, think it went out of fashion.

hendricksyousay · 09/01/2018 17:45

I did it when I was a teenager and my hair broke off .. please be careful .

sunnysunchild · 09/01/2018 17:46

Say goodbye to your hair in good condition!
I had this done once, burnt my scalp.
Curls rock..

hendricksyousay · 09/01/2018 17:48

Get a Brazilian blow dry if you want straight hair . It's not permanent but would be safer and kinder to your hair .

MuttsNutts · 09/01/2018 17:53

I have mine done 2/3 times a year. My hairdresser uses a very weak and liquid solution (she tried a paste once and results were much harsher).

I have quite frizzy hair rather than lovely curls and I found it was getting worse as I got older so she suggested it and I wish I’d tried it years ago. It doesn’t leave my hair poker straight and I still use straighteners to give a sleek look but it makes it much more manageable.

The process does strip colour so I always wait a few days and then colour rather than doing it before.

Undercoverbanana · 09/01/2018 17:56

Back in the noughties when everyone ironed their hair I resented my frizz so I tried this. Not a good result. AT ALL. Embrace the curls.

Partyfops · 09/01/2018 18:36

The problem I have is I have frizzy uneven curls which just looks awful. I have just found that working full time with a child to get out of the door to school means I go out everyday with my hair up which on me (double chin etc) looks awful and a bit unkempt for a 40 year old.

I'm quite happy to pay what it takes. But I live a long way from any big cities which might do Yuko.

You want either loreal xtenso or wella straight. Changed my life Smile. Bollocks to embracing the curl when it is horrible spherical frizz and the only thing anyone ever notices about you.

My small town hairdresser does wella straight. Lasts best part of a year although that is the intense one for uncoloured hair. You wont get dead straight , just shine and the ability to use a comb. And to get through a door and wear hats...

yawnyawnyawnyawn · 09/01/2018 20:05

Have you tried the curly girl method ,what products do you use ?

Writersblock2 · 09/01/2018 20:50

Matrix Optismooth. I do it every six months and I love it. Used to get it at the salon but after a few times of watching I bought the kit and had my fiancé do it.

NoStraightEdges · 09/01/2018 20:52

Are you anywhere near Birmingham?

Partyfops · 09/01/2018 20:56

I'm in Cornwall, nowhere down here does anything like it.

I don't really want curly hair though, it looks better straight.

Writersblock2 · 09/01/2018 21:12

Partyfops, I have had my optismooth two places in Cornwall - I live here too. :)

Partyfops · 09/01/2018 21:31

Ooh Writersblock can you perhaps private message me some salons in Cornwall please ? Grin

I used to use Xtenso by L’Oreal on clients. It worked well! One client was a guy with very curly hair, poker straight after, every time

Rtmhwales · 09/01/2018 21:37

I have done Japanese chemical straightening. No damage to my hair and it dries completely straight and frizz free for me. Natural hair is corkscrew curly and frizzy.

Partyfops · 09/01/2018 21:40

Is that Yukon?

OP posts:
gillybeanz · 09/01/2018 21:45

I did, and it was great, but when it grew out and was curly at the roots and straight further down, I looked like SideShow Bob, never again. lesson learned and I embrace my curls now. Grin
If you do have it done, be prepared to have to have a short cut as it grows out, unless you repeat it all the time.

Writersblock2 · 10/01/2018 01:12

PMing you

lurkingfromhome · 10/01/2018 07:17

I've tried the Brazilian blow dry several times and found them to be an expensive waste of time on my hair, with barely noticeable results. I use a home-relaxing kit (it's called Dark and Lovely - designed for afro hair and costing around a fiver) twice a year and it works a treat.

specialsubject · 10/01/2018 09:27

If it is shoulder length even my fuzzball is fine as it grows out given five mins with straighteners. The weight pulls out the worst of the reappearing curl.
