Never been before, and don't know what sort of look I should be going for; I imagine the weather will be hot.
I don't know where to shop for ideas, and would like to look chic but be comfortable.
Would appreciate some styling tips!
I am a size 10-12 pear shape.
Also,what shoes to wear?

I find this website really helpful for packing tips for specific places: www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-rome-italy-packing-list/
Take shoes you're comfortable walking lots in!

It will be very hot. Most important thing to remember is that for any religious sites (churches, anything related to the Vatican etc.) you will need to cover both your knees and your shoulders.

Miniskirts and shorts are therefore out, but the shoulder issue can easily be solved by carrying a cardigan or a nice wrap.

A good stylish option would be long or 3/4 white/kaki trousers (hard to keep clean though) with a nice lose flowy top. Summer dresses are also pretty popular.

Best shoes would be comfortable sandals, but I'd say comfort is more important than style here, as you will walk a lot!

You don't need to look particularly chic for Rome, it's full of tourists! One of my siblings used to live there and we used to go in June for nice weather but before it got steamy hot and packed. To be honest we had everything from rain to 40 degrees heatwave but generally nice, warm and sunny.

I'd wear anything I'd wear in a warm day here so nice dresses, shorts (back in the day), lightweight trousers. I used to always take a couple of floaty tops with sleeves for sightseeing on very hot days as I don't like that feeling of sun burning onto shoulders, even if it's not actually burning, but that might just be me!

Comfortable shoes are the only must.

Enjoy.

Dress for heat. Rome is blistering in summer

Firstly, there are cobbles everywhere as well as steps and little lanes, so you need trainers, converse type shoes (all the romans wear them) or sturdy sandles. I like my linen in the heat so live in linen crops and linen skirts with vest tops and light cotton shirts. I get linen from Next. Some of mine is years old and still going strong.

If you're visiting the Vatican or the numerous churches, remember no shorts, short skirts or bare arms. Although, we did see a few people in shorts last time we went so maybe they are relaxing that rule a bit. You'll need a good hat. I've got a fisherman style cotton hat - not classy but perfect for keeping the sun off.

Oh yes Vatican, first time I went I had the shoulders and knees thing covered but I hadn't thought about cleavage. I was wearing a dress which plunged and gaped a bit. I was young and didn't think anything of it but once in, I got an unmistakable look and felt very self conscious. Oh to be 25 again though!

Will be Hot. Even if it rains, its hot. Forget bringing a coat or jacket maybe a cardi for the evenings. Comfy walkers, like fitflops.
Sunglasses, and a sunhat. Having lived in Italy for 13 years I am aware of the heat in the summer.... the more cotton and linen the better. Forget tight fitting stuff. Wear white black beige or grey ir navy f you want to blend in with gli italiani! have fun.

I also saw plenty of people in shorts at the Vatican on our last trip about 10 years ago. Not short, shorts but I'd made DH and DS1 change into long trousers on a hot day and they weren't impressed when the saw others swanning around in normal shorts (most shorts were knee length then though).

Get active sandals which look more like sandals than sportswear IYSWIM and wear them in properly before you go, try Clarkes, Karrimor and Teva.

I think loose clothes (lightweight, long, swishy) are better for sightseeing in the heat than shorts and very short sleeves.

Make sure your bag is comfy too - surprising how straps can dig in after a couple of hot hours

This thread makes me laugh - it's true that sometimes city breaks can be more endurance than pleasure Grin I am going at the beginning of June OP and will be rocking the maxi dress with a shawl in my handbag.

Thanks everyone for some good advice; I now have an idea of what to look out for and try when Summer styles come into shops.

Take clothes that you will still be able to fit into after a week of pasta, pizza, gelato and pastries! Wink
