Foundation recommendations please

Could anyone recommend a good foundation? I have normal (as in, not too oily not too dry), very fair skin. Usually I use Rimmel Wake Me Up, however I had my first baby and turned 30 last year so I'm afraid its light coverage just isn't cutting it anymore. I'm looking for medium to full coverage, not too expensive but willing to spend a bit more if it's worth it. I have tried a Kat Von D foundation before and really didn't get on with it.

@SparklyLights I don't notice any scent to it but maybe get a sample to try out. I know what you mean about scent though when I bought Mac's Studio Fix it smelled like strong paint and a Chanel one I used was very florally.

Thanks sammy - I think it was the Mac nit Nars actually! What’s the coverage like on the nars? I like the sound of glow Smile

@SparklyLights The Nars Sheer Glow is not as heavy coverage compared to Mac's Studio Fix. I would say it's build able to medium coverage, definitely worth getting a sample because it's lovely and radiant on the skin!

I like the Nars all day luminous weightless foundation (the sheer glow want enough coverage for me)

It's actually not particularly 'luminous'. I think it has a natural /skin-like look. It's very thin/watery but a little goes a very long way so the bottle has lasted me ages. Great coverage but very light weight (I loved the finish of double wear but it was too heavy on my skin).

I'm also currently trying the brand new dior forever foundation. Think it's dior undercover. It's really similar and I'm quite liking it.

Do they sell the Ordinary foundation in shops?. I've only seen their products online so would struggle to find a match for my skin.

I think it's very personal OP.

I've tried loads of foundations people rave about and found most of them useless.

Double Wear oxidises on me, goes very cakey and frankly ages me 10 years - yet loads of people love it.

I'd advise in general to be wary of assuming you need heavier cover - what you might need is a better concealer and a foundation that you can layer where you need it.

As I've grown older I've actually found what works best is more moisturising foundation and better pigmented concealer in the places I need it.

I really like Bobbi Brown Stick and Serum foundations and Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder. Bare Minerals Pro is also very good. Bourjous Healthy Mix is also good at a lower price point and is very good value for money.

All are very buildable so you can get the cover you want - in the areas you need it, not just a thick mask everywhere.

As for concealer I again rate Bobbi Brown (the serum one and stick one). Benefit has some great concealers. My current favourite is Sisley for under eyes (sorry it's pricy).

crazy8 I bought mine in House of Fraser in Glasgow - I managed to be there at the same time as The Ordinary rep, so he matched my foundation for me, and I ended up buying a basket full of product for about £30.

Thanks guys - went to get some samples today and typically there were none in my colour! Got the Clarins lady to pop some foundation on my face though so will see how that wears for the rest of the day.

The only foundation I have repurchased multiple times is Make Up Forever HD.

Update - inspired by this thread I dug through my samples and found a Diorskin Forever sample. Gave it a whirl... I love it! Have just bought a full bottle as was due to replace my Clarins in a week or two. I still love the Clarins Everlasting (it's pretty good) but the Dior is more velvety and matte, although I put some Bourjois liquid highlighter all over underneath (very small amount) to lift it first in case it looked too flat. I think it still would be fine without though. It dries quicker than the Everlasting but still enough time to blend it out, unlike (for me) the Estee Lauder DW.

I looked into AirFlash but that's a spray I believe, more like a light-medium mist. I do prefer a good full coverage Smile but the Dior and the Clarins don't feel heavy on the skin.

But the Dior is my new love (until the next time)....

Interesting that people like The Ordinary foundation - before it was released the hype around it was such that you would have thought The Second Coming was imminent, but once it actually came out it all fell a bit flat?

Do people use the full coverage or the serum one? I haven't bothered with it yet, but might be interested to try it.

Thehairthebod · 13/01/2018 12:21

The closest I have got to a holy grail foundation is the Rimmel one with the red top - lasting finish. It's not quite full enough coverage for my hormonal acne ridden chin, but a bit of extra concealer sorts that. But it goes on beautifully (I pound my face with a beauty blender) , is lovely texture, pretty good coverage with no cakiness and is super cheap. I love it!
