Advent calendar reviews

Can I ask you how you found your 2017 advent calendar? Which one was it? How much did it cost? How do you rate it overall? Any other comments? Would you get it again?

This was my first year getting one and I got the Amazon one. It was £50. Overall I liked about 90% of the stuff and some stuff was very good. I would get it again also I liked opening a box every day. I'd be interested in trying others though. Hence this question.

Thank you!

I had the M&S calendar for the 3rd year running, and I was a bit disappointed with this one compared with the previous two.

I will use most of the products eventually, but felt it wasn’t as “balanced” as previous years - too many similar face products, and not enough hand/body/hair/shower type stuff.

I know M&S probably go to their beauty suppliers and say “what will you give us for this year’s calendar?”, and to a certain extent just get what they’re given - but the beauty buyers could have tried a bit harder to get a more variety!

I think it might be time for a change next time around.

thecatfromjapan · 07/01/2018 13:01

I had the Clarins one, when it was reduced - so £40?? (forgotten).

It's been brilliant. Lots of products that I've enjoyed using and will buy again. BUT there were some weird things in it - gift tags?!? - which I think I would have rather resented had I paid full price.

Unicorn81 · 07/01/2018 13:03

Green rituals one 60 i think. Lots of great products, better than the previous year. Still using shower gels and like the candles included. Great way to try before you buy larger sizes

Branleuse · 07/01/2018 14:25

i had the M&S one and I enjoyed opening it every day and trying some products I wouldnt normally try.
Will probably try a different one next year

somebodythinkofthechildren · 07/01/2018 14:38

I had the Look Fantastic one. Absolutely chuffed to bits with it; I've used all of the products, bar one which was some glittery tanning shit that went in the bin.

I use several of the products daily; the microfibre cleansing cloth, facial moisturisers, Crabtree & Evelyn hand cream, Molton Brown shower gel and the eyebrow pencil. Others I use frequent but not daily - the kohl eyeliner, Moroccan oil, face spray, elemis cream.

As a pp said, the Xmas day make up set was beautiful and I've got loads of use out of that. I really miss opening a little box every day Envy

I'll undoubtedly be getting DH to buy it for me buying it again next year.

I had the M and S one and didn’t like it at all, there were loads of anti-aging creams, night creams and liquid exfoliators, far too many for one month unless you fancied actually burning your entire face away. The makeup was two very similar lip things and two black mascaras Hmm and the Christmas Day item was a bright red polka dot cosmetic bag which went straight to the charity shop. Also it wasn’t really £35 as you had to spend £35 to get it; would rather have spent £70 on a decent calendar tbh.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 07/01/2018 17:05

I had the M&S one and although I liked it because I like the opportunity to try new brands and skincare products without the expense, I wouldn’t have like another hair product, a soap/some other body product and double ups on the mascara was a bit odd.

I loved the Stila lip stain, perfume, hair spray and a few of the skin care items which I’ll definitely repurchase but I can’t wear nail polish so that was a waste.

I would mind paying more for the calendar and having bigger/better content

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 07/01/2018 17:06

Obviously mean wouldn’t mind bloody autocorrect

I8toys · 07/01/2018 17:26

I had the Green Rituals Tree which I absolutely loved. Quality products including candles, travel wipes, scrub glove - so many different products. Bought some full size products in the sale already.
Had M&S - I like the different skin care products but just a few too many and the nail varnishes were shite.

I bought the Amazon calendar on black Friday for £30 and saved it for January - I hate January so want a treat. Now opening it and liking the products so far. Also got the Essie calendar from Superdrug in the sale for £10 and loving it - full size polishes in colours I like.

I'm going to use the Amazon box again and refill for my mum for February!!

Paperdove87 · 07/01/2018 18:11

I loved the look fantastic calendar. Slightly heavy on the moisturiser but they will last ages and it's great to try a variety without having to use up big bottles.

I'm looking for a more makeup based one for next year although I will probably buy the LF one again too. Blush Anyone got any suggestions? I like good brands of makeup and lots of the makeup calendar brands seen cheap? Wouldn't want a lipstick only one either.

MyNewHobbyIsGin · 07/01/2018 19:45

Agree with Meetie above, I liked the m&s one but it's didn't really feel very curated.

How much was the LF one - sounded good.

Annabelle4 · 07/01/2018 19:53

I think the LF one was £79 and reduced on Black Friday

LizzieSiddal · 07/01/2018 20:02

TheReal the JL one sounds great. How much was it?

I had the M&S one, it’s the first time I’ve had one. I really enjoyed opening a box everyday BUT I found the contents very disappointing, just face cream after face cream. So boring and predictable.

somebodythinkofthechildren · 07/01/2018 20:03

I think DH paid £70 for the LF calendar. But I know it sold out fairly quickly so next year I won't be taking any risks Grin

SymphonyofShadows · 07/01/2018 20:10

I had M&S for the third year and No7 for the second year. I thought M&S was good for the price despite looking like Yootha Joyce with the lip thing, but the first year was the best as it was only £25 and included a £10 bottle of Pixi Glow Tonic.

No7 wasn't as good as last year, I won't bother with it again. I got bored with it and ended up opening it all by about 15th Dec. Might try the LF one instead next time.

PyjamaLlama · 07/01/2018 20:36

I had the Look Fantastic one and I absolutely loved it. So much so that DH decided to buy me an Advent Calendar for my actual Christmas present, with the thinking that I could just open all the boxes at once on Christmas Day. Unfortunately he bought me the Laura Ashley one, which was rubbish Sad Mini nail files and tiny packets of bath salts etc. Extremely overpriced at £40 Sad

goose1964 · 07/01/2018 21:26

I had one for the home. I bought a Yankee Candle one for £12.50, it had a selection of tea lights and a votives for Christmas Eve .I usually scent the house at Christmas but we had a baby with us this year so do use them all

YouWereRight · 07/01/2018 21:32

My local boots have gazillions of the Zoella advent calendar still in stock, if anybody is looking to waste £25 Grin

Sparkletastic · 07/01/2018 21:38

Marks and Spencer's. Was a gift as have an end November birthday. Have had Clarins, L'Occitane and BeneFit in the past. M&S by far the best. The Rose exfoliant stuff is brilliant, as was the Shay and Blue scent, the gold polish, Korres cream, Rodial Dragons Blood and the M&S face peel.
