If you had an inheritance or big birthday or wedding etc which watch would you buy for yourself and dh? Second hand or new. I think I'd go for something classic like a Cartier Tank.

I'm currently saving for a watch. I like the rolex datejust 31 or the omega seamaster co-axial. Cartier are lovely to look at but to me seem a lot of money for a quartz movement. Xx

Hmmm I was just going on looks!!! Tell me about movements.

No expert here sadly. From what I've read automatic movements seem to be preferable to collectors as they stand the test of time although there are servicing costs involved. I've seen Cartier described as "fashion house" which I think infers that watches are not their area of expertise. Although I do think some of them look really lovely. Xxx

My 40th bday present was a vintage oyster airkong Rolex. It’s stainless steel so very understated but classy and classic

Wellhellothere1 · 06/01/2018 13:16

I love my Cartier Tank Francaise watch. I treated myself to it around 10 years ago with a bonus from work pre children. I still love it and feel it's a classic style which hasn't dated. I bought the small face one but if I had to choose it again I would get the bigger face as I'm quite tall with long arms and biggish hands so feel a bigger face would be more flattering.

My Cartier watch has an automatic movement...

heateallthebuns · 06/01/2018 15:49

Is it just quartz v automatic?

Both those watches are gorgeous - I'm jealous!

Here is an explanation of the different movements:

If I had to have a very expensive watch I'd have this one:

www.jurawatches.co.uk/products/oris-rectangular-date-leather-01-561-7693-4061-07-5-22-20fc-watch-or-1001

But I used to have a very similar one by Royal London that would have cost £100 full price (I was lucky enough to get it in a sale). It was by far the most attractive watch I've ever owned. I think the numbers on mine were slightly nicer - a more flowy, open looking font. Unfortunately after about 2 years I got a crack in the glass and it was going to cost more to replace than I paid for the whole watch in the first place. That's the reason I don't usually go for expensive watches!

An automatic mechanism is a mechanical one that doesn't require winding every day.

I think its the best of all worlds, you still have the 'luxe' of the mechanical movement, but it doesn't require you to actually do anything to keep it working.

If I could get hold of one I'd have the Oris Frank Sinatra with the white face (I already have the black) but there has been very little on the second hand market for years.

DP would have this:

I have a` Cartier Tank which I genuinely adore. DH has a Patek Philiipe which is out of this world in terms of style and loveliness.

MabelFurball · 06/01/2018 22:20

I would get a mantle clock as I don't wear watches that much.

MaMisled · 06/01/2018 22:32

I bought a Tag Hueur with a very small inheritance 30 yrs ago and still love it. Just bought DS one for his 21st and DDs have requested one for theirs too. Nice that it's become a family thing.

Tantpoke · 06/01/2018 23:04

I quite like this one

JaceLancs · 07/01/2018 00:28

Always omega for me

430West · 07/01/2018 14:09

Patek Philippe really is a fashion/brand purchase though, not something I'd be comfortable with at that price point.

Jaeger LeCoultre makes all the movements for Patek Philippe, why wouldn't you choose one of those? They're very much the horologist's watchmaker...

somebodythinkofthechildren · 07/01/2018 14:39

I got a Tag Heuer for a 'big' birthday a few years ago. It was a surprise, but I love it beyond words. Very understated but still beautiful.

TheWorldAsh · 07/01/2018 14:44

We both had Apple watches for Christmas. I've not worn a watch in years. DW has worn a traditional watch for years. She's got on with the Apple Watch just fine.

They look good and the fitness and health tracking is great. The fact they need charging daily...not so great.

I inherited a Longines watch from my mum which I love. Not as expensive as some of the others mentioned here
