Where do you go?

Where do you go these days all dressed up?

For me it use to be night clubs and work Christmas parties.

At 35 I am too old for night clubs and we are now self employed so no Christmas parties.

I feel over dressed if I am all dolled up most of the time now (restaurants, bars or theatre etc) as most people are casual.

Am I the only one who sometimes feels like putting on a dressy dress and a pair of damn high heels??!!!Grin

Weddings are probably the only time I ever properly dress up, though I've never been a high heels kind of a girl I do miss getting dressed up to go out. The most exciting place I go these days is the local pub.

Jaimx86 · 05/01/2018 20:18

On holiday. I chose locations where I know I can dress up at night. I went to the Canaries a few years ago and was really disappointed that people didn't dress up at night. DH and I also book the occasional meal at a formal restaurant where we can dress up too.

Italy! Weddings. The opera. The races.
It irritates me that people don’t dress up for the theatre any more.

PNGirl · 05/01/2018 20:23

Some restaurants in Bath (the expensive ones) I'd feel ok in a dress, but otherwise nowhere! Theatre is mostly full of people who have been walking around all day in jeans, and work Christmas parties is more skinnies, heeled ankle boots and a top than anything else. The last time I dressed up was for a wedding too.

edibleweirdo · 05/01/2018 21:17

nah I'm the same, I'll glam up for the supermarket because I just feel so plain and scruffy 99% of my life

calzone · 05/01/2018 21:38

I was thinking this today.....

I wanted to buy a green sparkly dress but I’d have nowhere to wear it and I’m on NSJ

Sometimes I wear a dress to the supermarket.

I agree with you, OP. My brother got married this year and kindly had two celebrations so I was able to get dressed up twice and wear two different nice dresses, shoes, etc.

I do go out to bars, clubs, etc. but everyone just wears jeans and trainers, or at least very casual clothes. I wore a casual-ish dress and nice new coat plus dangling earrings to dinner with DH on Wednesday evening and that felt / seemed very dressed up.

I went to my work Christmas party last month solely so that I could wear my new shoes. I love my colleagues, but I see them every day and usually want to be as far away from anything work-related as possible on a Friday night, but the invitation to the very unglamorous do was my only opportunity to dress up so I grabbed it! Seemed like everyone else had done the same as there were some lovely outfits and lots of effort made.

Weddings seem to be the only occasion now. My friends are all too old for hen parties and for the last two "big" birthdays in our group we've been for weekends away (both in winter so everyone swathed in scarves and boots).

As a scouser (although no longer living in Liverpool) I get dressed up to go to my sons Christmas carol Concert. I get a few funny looks but couldn't give a toss 😉
All my friends expect it if me now.

I'm the same! On the (very) odd occasion I get to go out to dinner I always plan to wear a dress and heels but then chicken out at the last minute and go for jeans.
Why is it that you feel like a tool if you're (too) dressed up?

rightknockered · 06/01/2018 01:12

I am quite frequently overdressed. I've been wearing jeans too often this week, so Monday am wearing a dress. I might dress it down slightly, but only with OTK boots, Which is still a bit dressy compared to everyone else on the school run

aishana · 06/01/2018 01:30

I'm 41. I go to nice bars with live bands or good djs to dress up.. also I like smart restaurants.

silkpyjamasallday · 06/01/2018 06:51

I feel like every occasion where previously I would have worn something a bit more dressy has become super casual. No one really dressed up for nights out when I was at uni, no one dresses nicely at the theatre anymore, same with nice restaurants. We went on holiday for my birthday in December and I bought a beautiful dress to wear to go out for dinner, but I would have looked out of place so didn't wear it in the end. I often get sucked in to buying lovely dresses or skirts and then have nowhere to wear them as I feel self conscious being overdressed.

Undercoverbanana · 06/01/2018 07:02

I agree. No-one dresses up anymore. Even the recent weddings I have been to have been informal (at the bride's request). At a recent funeral the widow requested jeans/leggings/casual tops as the deceased like people to be relaxed and comfortable. I bought a lovely dress for a Christmas do and really felt quite over-done - everyone said how nice I looked and I was pleased I had worn it, but others were more informal.

Undercoverbanana · 06/01/2018 07:06

Theatre - I would like to dress up for the theatre (very rare treat) but I would either be going straight from work (local theatre) or after a long day doing stuff I love in London like museums, pubs, Camden Lock, walking by the river etc. Because of this I am going to be wearing jeans/leggings and Docs etc. How did people manage to get dolled up in the past?

GaryBarlowsTaxReturn · 06/01/2018 07:09

I get dressed up. I don't particularly care if I'm the the most dressy in the room. I like heels and dresses and skirts. I also love glamorous coats at this time of year.
