Lip tips - dont wana look like a drag queen

Any tips for doing your lips if they are small and the second lipstick touches them you look like a drag queen?? I've tried liner and gloss and just smudging a bit of something natural on with a finger but it's all drag queeny. Feels a bit weird doing everything else and then just nothing on the lips...there must be more I can do?

Hi edible, if you have a concealer pencil or nude pencil, lightly fill in the outer line of lips, just outline the outside very lightly and then smudge in some more inside the lips to create a "grab" base for the lipstick you choose..you say you look like a drag queen with lipstick so I'm guessing that light lippy is the way forward, (not too light or pearlescent) depending on your skin tone, but one that doesn't stand out and just helps polish your finished, made-up look. Think summer tones like the right peach for your complexion or a strong pink applied sparsely and lightly and blended so that it just looks like your lips natural colour (again, your natural skin tone factors in here so adjust what I'm saying accordingly). Blend the outer lip line too, very very gently so it doesn't go awry or feather into outer lip lines (if you have any/many). Hope this helps! BTW lip gloss can be too gloopy but does help keep lips looking moist and fresh, just don't omit it but go overboard. Perhaps just as part of the base with the nude pencil and again, very lightly. A matt lip can be very sexy provided the lips are not dry to start with; there is a difference! Buff your lips whilst wet, to behind with, with some Vaseline and an old toothbrush or flannel, (rub lightly and not harshly) and this should remove any dry flaky skin on and around the lips. Gently does it is the key to all steps!
Good luck, I'm sure you will look lovely.x.

wear a really nude or lipstick that is just one shade darker than your own lips. don't worry about liners or anything like that as they just look a bit naff imo anyway

MamaElle · 05/01/2018 20:22

Excuse the typos in previous post; "just don't omit it but DON'T go overboard" I was meant to say regarding the lip gloss and to "behind with" was meant to read "to begin with"! Sorry!

MamaElle · 05/01/2018 20:25

Lip liner only looks "naff" if it is obvious. The key to making yourself look like you have lips is to apply a liner that is not perceptible but creates the appearance of an actual lip. There are very good invisible ones available on the market. Never use the same colour as lipstick you are wearing, if you have "no lips". If you have full lips, lip liner is not necessary.

MamaElle · 05/01/2018 20:33

BTW edible: the right lip brush is very good at blending neatly but not obviously if you don't want to use your finger. If all else fails some waxy rather than shiny lip balm (not gloss) is a good way to go and you won't feel insecure or worry about your lips all day/night. Just have fun! Lipstick usually needs touching up anyway so this is the easiest way to go. Let your eyes be the focus. A lot less touching up too!

The perfect lip colour is the colour of your nipples apparently.

Cheekyandfreaky · 05/01/2018 20:56

A tip I found helpful (which contradicts someone up thread) is to put some of the lipstick first on a cotton bud and then use that to line your lips first. I then fill it in with a lip brush. It works for me in that it’s a softer look, as I can build colour gradually. I totally know what you mean about the look, I think sometimes it can just be practise and sometimes just getting used to the look of lippie on your face.

edibleweirdo · 05/01/2018 21:10

notes everything down THANKS everyone :D off to examine my nipples now...

I’m rubbish with lipstick so make more of my eyes and just smudge gloss on my lips.

Watching thread with interest and examining nipples.

retainertrainer · 05/01/2018 21:22

You’ve just got to wear it with confidence. I always thought I looked weird in lipstick (especially bright colours!) I felt like a little girl playing dress up but I’ve worn it every day for the last couple of months and now it just looks......normal.

MamaElle · 05/01/2018 21:22

Doesn't contradict me! Everyone must do what they feel works for them, there is no hard and fast rule. I think the cotton bud tip is great, pardon the pun! I used to do this too but found that sometimes, the cotton can come off and stick to lips. Now I just use my finger to blend but edible said she doesn't like this. Nipples tip I would have gone for once, but not so sure it's for me any more as exclusively expressing my baby's milk for eight months has changed the colour of mine altogether but that's quite another thread! 😊

What is invisible lip liner?

MamaElle · 05/01/2018 21:47

Invisible lip liner is a liner that fills in the lip lines and prevents bleeding lipstick and helps the lipstick stay inside the line/on the lip. It is like a concealer stick in that it can come in flesh/skin tones, a waxy (type) of pencil (but not greasy) with very little colour, if any.

MamaElle · 05/01/2018 21:51

The point of the lip liner being "invisible" is so that it doesn't appear harsh or "naff" as mercurymaze put it, (which we are in agreement about I might add as lip liner can look awful if not expertly applied and on the "wrong" lips and in the "wrong" shades) but it still performs the same functions as normal lip liner like preventing bleeding/feathering and supplying a good shape to the lip. It's just not obvious, so more natural looking/imperceptible.

Invest in a Bobbi Brown lip brush. Changed everything for me.

So your perfect lip colour changes after pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Carfish · 06/01/2018 09:41

Getting your nipples out to compare against the colour charts could be a bit tricksy in Boots ? Grin

Notmybag · 06/01/2018 09:49

@MamaElle where can I get this invisible liner- it sounds right up my street as my lips are a little narrower at the top. Both top and bottom very prime to leaking colour onto the skin around, particularly below my bottom lip. I tend to wear Mac Matt lipstick or one of their satin ones in Twig

MamaElle · 06/01/2018 10:31

Hello All,

Notmybag, there are loads of invisible lip liners available on the market. I like Lipstick Queen invisible liner. Experiment with a few but this is the one I like and recommend.

With regards to nipple colour changing due to pregnancy and breastfeeding; mine changed during pregnancy (got darker) and then lightened up again once I gave birth. However, my baby had a tongue tie and I had this addressed when she was two months the old but by then we were both used to the bottle feeding my expressed milk. Now, nearly nine months in, my nipples are darker but I have been assured they will go back to their original colour. They don't look bad and I know it's from the constant sucking motion that the pump crudely mimics so I can't say breastfeeding has this occur in the same way exclusively expressing milk multiple times a day does, but yes, nipple colour change is just part of the job and one of the many occupational hazards I have had to endure since becoming a mama!
