Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

JANUARY 2018: Thread 11! Shock we're getting old. A recap of The Snailies categories for those still meaning to get round to them:

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2017 🐌🐌

Wink The Well Hello There - newest and latest find that gets your motor running

Angry The Flusher- money spent on this product would have been better put to use by flushing it down the toilet

Halo The Jack & Rose- the product you’ll never let go of because there’s plenty of fucking space for the two of you on that piece of wood. Damn you, James Cameron, for breaking my poor little tween heart.

Biscuit The LTB- it all seemed so promising, everything was going so great, then they turned out to be a narcissist gaslighting bastard

Envy The Child Prodigy- that one product that’s annoyingly good and isn’t afraid to be smug about it

Smile The Worker Bee- never the centre of attention but has been steadily chugging along like no other

Hmm The Troll- the one where you repeatedly asked, ‘Is this doing anything?’, but continued to use it anyway…

Confused The Flabbergaster- that one product or technique that wasn’t really supposed to be used like that or delivered well beyond your non-existent expectations

Blush The Sinner- oh, admit it because we’re all guilty of it, what did you do or use that wasn’t all that sensible like take an acid bath and had the disastrous results you really knew to expect

Oops. I went for fair!

Will review when it arrives but I would highly recommend the MUR conceal and define, I have C1 and it's perfect on me, and not drying under the eyes

EnidButton · 16/01/2018 22:01

Hang on, with £13 shipping, direct from tarte is sluggtmynmore expensive but qvc have sold out of fair anyway. Just in case anyone else is looking.

EnidButton · 16/01/2018 22:02

God knows what that's meant to say ^ 🙃 Maybe I should try that Olli, I want high coverage as the tiredness is showing through lately.

Ollivander84 · 16/01/2018 22:09

The MUR one is £4 < enables >

EnidButton · 16/01/2018 22:26

Grin I'm going to try that first. Be daft not to really. Will look in our nearest SD on Saturday.

Ollivander84 · 16/01/2018 22:28

It's decent coverage, I look less black eyed when wearing it Grin
So tired with my job at the minute that only 24hrs sleep would solve my circles!

JDSTER · 16/01/2018 22:46

closedes the SPF I use is Japanese make, Biore. If you’ve not used Japanese SPF before they are very light and comfortable on the skin. I’ve used (and still use for holidays) LRP spf. I find them very heavy but they offer good water resistance, hence good for holidays.
I have oily skin so finding an SPF that won’t exacerbate the oil is paramount for me. I’ve used Biore watery essence which is good but I prefer Biore UV bright milk SPF 50 (pink bottle). Sorry can’t link on phone. I buy from any Japanese seller on eBay with good feedback. It’ll take a couple of weeks to arrive. It has a lovely matte finish. It’s looks white going on but doesn’t leave a white cast at all on me (might on a dark skin tone). Have a look at some reviews and see what you think but up to now, it’s HG sunscreen for me.

mintmagnummm · 17/01/2018 06:43

Thanks bo I was actually wondering whether my skin dislikes HA as all the hydrating serums I've tried have contained it?? I tried a sample of the Kiehls toner but wasn't keen. Is the HA in the Vichy serum different to all the others I've tried??

I've never tried a BHA are there any specific ones you would recommend and how/when would I apply it? Thanks for your help bo

mintmagnummm · 17/01/2018 06:44

Enid still no routine from you 🤷🏼‍♀️😜

mintmagnummm · 17/01/2018 06:51

Oh and haven't been using the ANR and breakouts haven't particularly improved but I've not noticed any difference in my skin from not using it either so it's an expense I can do without

botemp · 17/01/2018 13:01

mint, I usually suggest people start with the 1% Calm BHA from Paula's Choice if the integrity of the skin barrier isn't clear but that one is full of silicones so probably not the best fit for you. The 2% BHA Skin Perfecting liquid should be a bit safer to use if you use it on a damp cotton and really only use it 1-2x a week, possibly graduating to a dry cotton pad if things go well after a few months.

Yes, the Vichy HA is different because it isn't a tonne of different weights of HA (which penetrate deeper and are therefore more likely to irritate), it's just old-fashioned HA that keeps moisture on the surface. It won't cure dehydration (not that other HA serums will) but it will help replenish what's missing. The Vichy should really be viewed more as a 'water' serum rather than an HA serum. The 89 stands for the % of Vichy thermal water in the formula, so that's what it mostly is, it has a few choice other ingredients like HA to retain it where you want it rather than evaporating.

My experience with ANR has always been that it's nice for a bit but I've found no real improvements using it long term, so it's always been something to grab when skin is feeling a bit blergh to perk it up but over the course of a few days, when it's done its thing I then move on.

mintmagnummm · 17/01/2018 14:28

That's great thank you bo. With the bha liquid do I apply it just to my breakouts or all over? And do I apply it after the Vichy water spray??
I will definitely try the Vichy 89 thank you, would you use am or pm? Or both? And where does it slot into routine in relation to the bha and my Vichy water spray?

Yes I'm a little disappointed with the results of ANR considering the price tag! I loved everything about it but it just did not give me anything! I'm still unsure if this was the cause of congestion and breakouts as I'm still getting them even though I've discontinued use.

I'm really enjoying the avene extremely gentle cleanser still Smile and also love the Vichy spray and eucerin moisturiser, I do very much hope none of these products are the cause of my breakouts! It's doubtful though as it isn't my usual reaction type spots/rash.

mintmagnummm · 17/01/2018 14:37

Oh sorry bo is the liquid the best out of the liquid, gel, lotion 2%

mintmagnummm · 17/01/2018 14:56

I'm so sorry for multiple posts and lots of questions but something I've been meaning to ask for a while bo is if you could recommend a very simple routine for my better half! He has sensitive skin, not reactive like mine but a bit delicate. He is combination and convinced he looks shiny all the time and he also suffers from breakouts and congestion. He works in the construction industry, smokes and drinks coffee (but no water!) u cannot change any of these bad habits so I'm aware his skin and indeed his health can only be improved to a certain extent lol. He's currently using bulldog sensitive face wash and matching moisturiser but is unhappy. Any suggestions?

EnidButton · 17/01/2018 17:27

Oh yeah, sorry Mint Cake Been poorly past week. I will get to it soon

botemp · 17/01/2018 20:11

mint, just use it on the areas prone to breakouts, if you're in the midst of one it sometimes help speed it along. However, the tricky thing with BHA is at the start it can pull up gunk in an accelerated fashion, which may be a purge, but for all you know it could be a product reaction.

Vichy 89 I'd use AM definitely and PM if you like it there too but not as essential. Cleanse, Vichy spray, Vichy 89, Moisturiser/SPF.

BHA I'd use at night. Cleanse, Vichy spray, tissue off any excess water, BHA, wait 30 secs or so to absorb, Vichy 89 (if using), Moisturiser.

You'll want the Liquid from PC.

Can I owe you an answer for your OH, I've been meaning to compile a list of liked products on here with sample routines, was going to work on it on Friday.

botemp · 17/01/2018 20:13

Sorry forgot to add, just get the trial/travel size BHA from PC (though lookfantastic stock them too with free shipping and usually a discount code going), if you're just using it on targeted spots it tends to take quite a while to use up.

mintmagnummm · 17/01/2018 21:42

Thanks so much bo it's much appreciated and of course you can owe me an answer for my OH. Thanks again Thanks

mintmagnummm · 18/01/2018 07:53

Paula's choice bha liquid ordered Grin

mintmagnummm · 18/01/2018 07:54

Will be going to boots today to hopefully get the Vichy 89 serum then can start using that first

mintmagnummm · 18/01/2018 12:32

I've got the mineral 89 so will keep you posted bo

Pupsiecola · 18/01/2018 16:58

Do you guys use a specific retinol for under eyes or take your regular one there?

JDSTER · 18/01/2018 19:24

Pupsie You shouldn’t use regular retinol around eye area. Dr Sam in one of her videos shows her applying regular eye cream, almost as a barrier, before applying retinol to face at night. LRP do a version for eye area I think, although I haven’t tried it.

bo a list of liked products and sample routines would be welcome, thanks.

mint glad you finally got your purchases sorted Grin

Pupsiecola · 18/01/2018 19:29

Thanks JD. I watched her video earlier. I am going to do the retinol over moisturiser on the rest of my face for a couple weeks, and look at the LEP eye one.
