Majirel advice please

Hi, I wanted to decrease hairdresser trips so I ordered majirel (3) and L’Oréal oxidant creme (6% 20vol) from Amazon.

I have dark brown hair but I wanted to cover the greys in the T-bar area. My grey roots might be better described as white roots.

I mixed 10mls of majirel and 15 ml of oxidant creme, applies it to the greys, waited 35 mins and then rinsed off. I had lots of the solution left and it was quite watery.

Result: I still have grey hair (maybe about 50 percent less).

Does anyone have any ideas / advice as to how to achieve better coverage? Or is this as good as it gets when doing it at home. Hairdresser manages to cover it all. I would really appreciate any help. TiA

Was the mixture very loose? In terms of application was it done evenly? I usually use 3.0 to cover greys as it is a deeper tone. There is also no harm in leaving it on longer than 35 minutes to cover greys I would leave it on for a good 40 minutes and probably comb it through at 40 minutes and leave it to develop further for another 5/10 minutes.

I got my dh to apply it so I’d say it was put on well. The solution was much more dilute than they use in hairdresser. It was a liquid rather than a paste. Thanks for advice about leaving it longer. I will try that- I was afraid my hair would fall out if I didn’t stick rigidly to times!

Try to mix it slightly thicker into a paste, leaving it longer won't harm as you are using 6vol20% peroxide which is the weakest and less damaging one. I would wait a couple of weeks until roots are out again and redo goodluck!

How are you measuring? I bought some accurate kitchen scales and weigh mine. It’s definitely not a drippy liquid when mixed

missjoanie · 04/01/2018 11:12

I mix equal parts: 30 mls colour to 30mls oxidant creme- that will give you a paste the consistency you need.

It should be mixed on 1 to 1 ratio. 6% is one of the stronger peroxides but it's what a hairdresser would use on grey. If it still won't cover mixed on a 1 to 1 ratio, then you might need 12% or your hair might need pre-softening. I'd leave that to a qualified professional.

I don't know how much hair you have but I can't see 10ml of colour being enough to fully saturate your roots. I use 30 when I do mine and there isn't much left over.

Ohb0llocks · 04/01/2018 11:24

10ml isn't enough. Majirel should be mixed 1:1.5

Use 20 vol.

Ohb0llocks · 04/01/2018 11:32

Also majirel not amazing with greys ime

Something like kolesten perfect that carries a 33.0 'intense' shade may be better.

jeyda · 04/01/2018 11:45

12% is only used to lift colour, it takes it up by 5 shades. Please don't use 12% as it won't cover ur greys and will significantly damage it. 6% is what you need to mix with number 3 to cover greys.

Thanks everyone. I will try a paste with a ratio of 1:1 and leave it on for longer. I use a measuring spoon for the colour. Should I wait a few weeks before I try again to avoid damaging the hair?

You'll be fine to do it again.

I wouldn't use 1:1 though, it's 1:1.5 for a reason.

brogueish · 04/01/2018 16:12

Agree with the 1:1.5 ratio for 35-40 minutes, and I use shade 6.0 with 6% developer. The developer will be lighter textured than than the Majirel but they're both quite stiff and you should end up with something like eg mayonnaise, definitely not watery/drippy. You can buy liquid developers (I use them with eyebrow dye), but only mentioning that because I'm not sure how you ended up with a watery mix. Like PPs, I use around half a tube of Majirel + developer to cover roots, 10ml is not enough ime.

Jboure · 04/01/2018 16:20

Okay so it sounds like my mixture was too thin. I will check how I measure and get a more goopy/ mayonnaise type one using the 1:1.5 ratio. I can then put it on thicker and leave for longer. Thanks Everyone for taking the time to post.
