Help me transform my skin

FishinthePerculator · 03/01/2018 14:25

Looking for the hive mind of mumsnet to help me sort out my awful, aging, dull, saggy skin. I know I'm likely to get lots of individual product recommendations but hoping that one or two will start to shine through - much like I hope my skin will do - or at the very least, I can get a better idea of the type of products I need and then hone the specifics from there.

I am 38 and all the other women I know if this age seem to have clear, bright, healthy looking skin. Mine is old, saggy and dull looking. Most of the time, I can hide this well with make-up but for some reason, make-up does not tend to stay on me very well during the working week - I wonder if I subconsciously rub my face a lot with stress when I am working and end up rubbing it off. In any case, I don’t have time to keep reapplying during the day and at the end of the day, I look a fright. I'd also like to have the confidence to go make-up free or make-up light at times but this is where I need the radiant skin of my peers. I know I'm in a vicious circle of self-defeat by constantly covering up with make-up but a did, for a while, last year, conduct an experiment, wearing only bb cream and a very light mascara for almost three months. I was constantly told I didn’t look well and then the last straw came when I saw a photo of myself, so it was back to full coverage.

My current skincare regime is quite basic so I'm thinking there has to be some miracle product(s) out there which can help. I have had cleanse, tone and moisturise drummed into me since I was a teenager and currently wash with a dove bar, then use simple toner and light hydrating moisturiser. Until recently I only used all three in the morning and washed with dove only at night but for the last couple of months, I've started the full routine before bed. I also exfoliate twice a week with a homemade mixture of coconut oil and rock salt. When I was 16, I was given a gift set of the Clinique 3-step system which I loved as it was so grown-up and posh! I used that religiously until age 28. My skin had always been very red, sensitive and dry and I eventually started wondering if the Clinique products were too harsh. I had a facial where the therapist confirmed this and recommended using simple products. It took about a year but my skin became noticeably better, for at least a while. Then, I just seemed to wake up about a year ago with old saggy skin from out of the blue. I know it is vain and a first world problem but it is really getting me down now. I hate the way I look.

So I'm ready to give up on simple and go for something which will work harder for my skin but I've spend quite a bit of time going from shop to shop, beauty counter to beauty counter and there is so much out there, I don’t know where to start and am a bit too intimidated to speak to the assistants. Firstly, it seems I need to know my skin type. That sounds easy but I don’t have a clue. I've always thought of my skin as dry but I don’t think it necessarily is anymore. I do have rosacea and my skin does tend to break out - especially along my cheekbones with certain products. I feel I look very shiny, especially around the chin and t-zone area but I've tried the blot test with no result so maybe not all that oily? I do get large cyst-like spots around my chin and jaw-line on a regular basis. I eat loads of fruit and veg and oily fish and have never smoked. I probably don’t drink as much water as I should but am making a conscious effort to change this. I am a bit overweight, which doesn’t help but am also working on this - also, I see lots of overweight people with lovely healthy looking skin so perhaps not really linked? Somehow my skin manages so look both red and dull at the same time, which seems like a bit of a feat.

I don’t have a lot of money to spend on skincare products although can increase from the simple range. I'm probably looking at the no.7 price range, although not necessarily their products. I had an origins eye cream sample a while back which I loved (didn’t realise there was a problem around my eyes, until I started using it, and then stopped) but their stuff is a bit expensive and the range is completely overwhelming. Maybe one item from their with complementary products elsewhere? I expect I need some kind of cleanser or micellar water? A new toner and moisturiser? One thing I've found, looking around, is that there are not a lot of toners out there - is this really needed? Am I stuck in the 90s? Possibly some kind of serum (I see some places have redness reducing products) and a night cream?

Please help me uncover younger, more radiant, tighter skin with a more even tone/less redness and hopefully few breakouts. Is this impossible?

Bio oil.

Have a look at the Caroline Hirons Cheat Sheet for Routines.
www.carolinehirons.com/2013/06/routines-cheat-sheet.html
She says the usual ‘cleanse, time, moisturise’ routine leaves skin too dry and dehydrated, and suggests more hydration and acid toning instead, to lower the skin’s Ph.
It doesn’t work for everyone but personally my skin feels happier on this kind of routine.

TitaniasCloset · 03/01/2018 14:57

I would recommend a hot cloth cleanser, such as Liz Earle and maybe a toner or exfoliate with salicylic acid, such as nip and fab pads.

I agree though skin care has changed so has make up.

Maybe make up wise you could get a primer that gives you a glow, I have heard good things about Charlotte tilbury but can't afford to by it just yet myself.

Sorry about spelling in post I can type with my new fake nails.

I'm only 29 but have been given no7 protect and perfect serum over christmas and it really has made a difference over a week or so.
A primer is a good idea, I love no7 airbrush away.

Bio-oil Grin
Shock
No, don’t use that!
It is almost pure petroleum.

BobbiPins · 03/01/2018 17:20

OP, can you be anemic? may be worth doing a blood test to find out. How's your digestive system? If something isn't working it may affect your skin...
Drink enough water.

As for the products, I think you need to use something with glycolic acids, like a glycolic peel. I recently tried Vichy Idealia Peeling (Radiance activating Night peeling care). It is very mild, feels like water, you apply a bit on a cotton and wipe your face before bedtime. but it did make the face look more fresh after a few days. You need to wear a sunscreen every day though.

Also maybe try a vitamin C serum. I like this one (costs about £13), but it's a Canadian company, I don't know if it's available in the UK beautesache.com/product/vitamin-c-serum/

Have a look at the The Ordinary - high strength, effective remedies that seem to genuinely work for most people, at a sensible price. If you search on here there are lots of threads recommending it and with advice on which things to buy.

Victoria Health also sells it - you can email either The Ordinary or Victoria Health directly with a description of your skin and they will tell you what to use.

oohloolalala · 03/01/2018 17:39

Liz Earle has been great for my skin, much less dry and sensitive than it was. I still need something to clear awful congested pores on my chin though, they have always been there!

RubyGoat · 03/01/2018 17:58

I would stay away from anything fragranced, anything by a big brand (expensive / fancy / also does perfume & makeup). I'm about the same age as you, OP & I have the opposite problem - I still have combination, almost teenage skin. If I don't use the right products & eat well, I look like a spotty schoolboy.

I recommend you have a look at the long skincare thread in S&B. We're all very friendly. It's been more beneficial for my skin than roaccutane...

I occasionally do product trials and two that have stood out have been rosehip oil and a solid oil cleanser, unfortunately the latter was unbranded but it was yellow and had a slight menthol smell perhaps it rings a bell with someone.

I'm probably not the best person to give skin care advice to because I'm Jane in the Okay ads only it's most definitely genetic

TitaniasCloset · 03/01/2018 23:18

Oh and I checked out a small Charlotte tilbury stand today, I think Mac is better.

passtheharibo · 04/01/2018 09:20

OP, look for a rosacea specific range, please don't start slapping acids and oils on top of rosacea! Rosehip is one of the most comedogenic oils. You need to introduce one new thing at a time and check for reactions.

creampie · 04/01/2018 15:36

I would second the Ordinary range from decim. They'll give you a skin care routine if you email them, and it's very cheap but really effective.

JessieMcJessie · 04/01/2018 16:19

Haven’t read in detail but see if you can find an american book called the Skin Type Solution by American dermatologist Dr Leslie Baumann. It has really detailed questionnaires that point you to non-prescription products available on the high street and most are available in the UK as well as the US. It revolutionised my skincare regime years ago.

TitaniasCloset · 04/01/2018 19:55

Dita Von teese had a problem with rosacea for years she says and cured it eventually by going to a dermatologist in her home town, after trying everything and lots of other dermatologists.

secondhoneymoon · 04/01/2018 20:16

Another Liz Earle cleanse and polish fan here, followed by toning and moisturising (am sure some might disagree but the other products don't have to be Liz Earle - I love Aldi moisturisers, both day and night).

Hueandcry · 04/01/2018 20:18

La Roche posay products are amazing & on offer in Boots at the moment

knitknack · 04/01/2018 22:50

Buy just a few items from the ordinary - you won’t need to spend more than £20 and for goodness sake stop scratching your face with salt! Email the ordinary - they’re brilliant and will help you choose a basic routine.

And NOBODY should be putting bio oil anywhere - it’s just mineral oil, it’s the biggest scam ever and terrible for skin.

knitknack · 04/01/2018 22:52

DONT get the liz Earle cleanse and polish - it contains eucalyptus oil for goodness sake! Has anyone ever smelt olbus oil and thought “hmmmm that smells like it’ll be kind to skin”????

RubyGoat · 04/01/2018 23:33

Agree re Liz Earle. It looks, feels & smells premium. However it's full of (admittedly natural) fragrance, which is likely to cause irritation. Also, many of the products contain wheatgerm oil, which is a great moisturising agent but highly comedogenic if you are sensitive to it. I shudder at the memory... it took weeks for the blemishes to fade after I used it - worst thing I've ever used.
