For kids. 2 boys, 7&9 - how many tops/trousers do they need? Rooms are bursting at the seams with hand me downs etc. I'm crap at throwing stuff out but they can't find anything and we need to de clutter.

They each have 10 pairs of school trousers!

I'd say:
3 pairs of pyjamas
One dressing gown
Slippers
Onesie

10 Underpants
7 socks
7 school socks
5 vests
2 slipper socks

3 school trousers
3 school jumpers
3 shirts
2 polo shirts (Obviously per school rules)
School coat
One shorts

Two jeans
Two trousers
Two joggers
One shorts

Four short sleeve t-shirts
Three long sleeve T-shirts
Three casual shirt
Three casual jumpers
Two hoodies
One nice shirt
One nice jumper

One winter coat
One every day jacket
Snowsuit/Puddlesuit (Depending on age/child)
Wellies/Snowboots

Two casual trainers
One pair of boots
One nice pair of shoes
One scruffy pair of shoes

Plus a shit load of crap they love but is hideous?

It's what we have going on in our house.

10 pair of school trousers each? That's really excessive. We have 2 school trousers, 1 school tracksuit.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 02/01/2018 18:34

That's quite a lot when they only wear casual clothes at weekends. I have pared the dds down to 2 long sleeved and 2 short sleeved tops plus a party dress and one skirt and 2 pairs of tights this season. They have 2 complete sets of uniform each. Party shoes, winter boots and school shoes and converse andwellues

No sportswear?

DelphiniumBlue · 02/01/2018 19:46

Depends on the child. DS1 & 2 could manage a week on 1 pair of school trousers ( but had 2 each in case of emergency) but DS3 needed a clean pair every day, so had more. They had 5 school shirts, wore the same socks and black trainers in and out of school, and also had another pair of trainers and wellies. They had a school coat and a a fleecey/padded jacket each, and then t shirts, a few shirts each, jean and joggers. No smart stuff unless there was a special occasion.

Definitely depends on how often you do the laundry. I like to have lots of spares in case we get behind on the laundry (which happens frequently!) but then mine is still in nappies and tends to need a regular change of clothes. But I do keep extras in a drawer in my bedroom to keep clothes in DD bedroom manageable. Could you do that?

We also have lots of hand me downs so I know what you mean about feeling overwhelmed. I no longer feel bad about passing stuff onto charity or friends, as I know someone else is getting use of the clothes we don’t need. We feel lucky to receive what we do.

My dds manage on

3 -5 long sleeve tops
5 t shirts
2-3 joggers/ trousers
A good pair of jeans or 2
2 jumpers / sweaters
A hoodie
A good performance coat with an inner fleece- trespass
A nice outfit with nice shoes (party type outfit from monsoon usually )
Another nice outfit for dinners out but not as formal as above
2 long sleeve pjs 2 shirt sleeve
7 pants , 5 vests
7 socks

2 uniform cardigans , trousers , 3 shirts , 2 polo shirts ,

Wellies , school shoes , trainers , nice shoes , casual shoes

I forgot all the activity gear but that lives in the assigned bag on hooks in their room so not part of the wardrobe per se.

Op we do ours seasonally so right now only winter clothes are in circulation. I've got rid of all the summer clothes that don't fit them and what does is packed away just now.

Clankboing · 02/01/2018 23:59

I have 4 children. Every half term holiday I go through their wardrobes checking what doesn't fit anymore. Then the clothes that are too small for child number 1 go to the top section of child number 2's wardrobe (in other words waiting for ds2 to grow). I then do the same for child number 3 and 4. I create a charity bag of unwanted stuff. I then put hand me downs into each wardrobe. To ensure it isn't too crowded I ask the children to sift out clothes they dislike. I only buy clothes if really needed and ensure that I wash frequently instead.
