Straighteners - GHD or something else?

My trusty GHDs are about 10 years old and whilst they still work they dont work like they used to! I dont use them a lot, and tend to curl my hair rather than straighten it but i like to use the straighteners as opposed to a wand or tongs.

Are GHDs still the best? My hair is thick and it used to be that GHDs were the only ones that worked, but i have seen tons online that all claim to be ceramic and heat up to 230?

Any recommendations if not GHDs?

Cloud 9 is suppose to be the holy grail of straighteners now.

I’ve heard multiple times including on here the original inventor of GHD now makes cloud 9s.

When my GHDs pack up that’s the route I’m going to take as I’m on my second pair I don’t love them as much as my original.

Maybe check out the reviews on amazon

How funny, I was just about to ask a similar question.

What I don't understand is the massive variation in price.

I've seen Rimington straighteners for £18.99 which claim to heat to 230 degrees, and have rave reviews.

Cloud 9s only seem to heat to 200 degrees and are 5 times as expensive.

Then there are the mid range straighteners at 30-50 quid-ish. Apart from the size of the tongs - small or large, i can't work out the why i would want these.

apologies for the hi-jack - hope it's only adding to your thread.

New ghds only heat to about 190 I think. They are not a patch on the old ones. I think the technology has caught up on them and you can easily get mid range or budget options that are just as good. The heat is the most important thing. Remingtons are excellent and you will get a pair for less than £50 easily. Just make sure they go to 230 degrees. Less than this is not effective for really thick wavy hair despite ghd saying the new lower temp ones are right for all hair types. I tried them and they were rubbish.

My mum has those 18.99 Remingtons and they’re great.

I asked ghd and they confirmed that temperature is now only 185. Better for hair but doesn't work as well. Thinking of returning mine.

I've gone back to using my 2006 GHDs . My new ones are shit. The plates don't meet. They claim this is supposed to happen and they will still work perfectly once they heat up. They leave half the segment of hair still curly and the other half gets breakages as I'm having to press so hard Hmm

Following this with interest- mine are also 10 years old and I'm kinda expecting them to give up the ghost. My daughters have the new ones and still reckon mine are better.

I have the Glamoriser heat brush it's pretty good heats up to 210 though you have three lower settings. It's in the sale for £50 and easier to use than regular straightners. Prior to that I was using GHD IV but as everyone else is saying the quality isn't there anymore.

I just gave dd some cloud 9's for Christmas. They are excellent-like the old GHD's. They keep finding their way to my dressing table somehow!

neonpidgwidgeon · 02/01/2018 14:01

I would definitely get Cloud 9s if my ghds broke. I used a friend's pair and they were brilliant, much better than my ghds.

What a great source of information.
I've just spent £19.99 on some Remingtons from Boots - will report back.
