bad hair genetics

is there any hope of having luscious hair?
my hair is really thin, lank, naturally shitty dull brown and I have so many grey hairs for 35yrs of age Sad

when I tie it up not only do the sides of my hair look balding, but the pony tail is thin. if I live it down it looks like I can star in the oliver twist production! just a ratty look, its knots easy and the hair seem to get thinner half way to the ends?

ive tried the bun rings but the It looks weird with my thinning hair at the sides. I also get a lot of baby hair that stick up and the left side of my hair always breaks so that side is even thinner then the right.

the hairdresser I go to says its genetic and no potion with make it thicker, ive tried volume products but it is too heavy for my hair. moose just makes it worse. back combing makes it knot, was told my hairs too thin to do extensions and will damage it more - which I believe would. I don't use hot irons on it just the hair dryer as I have a fringe to curl. I recently use macadamia oil.

ive tried sea kelp and biotin. rinsing with apple cider vinegar...
until recently (around aug time) im usually a healthy eater and it still makes no different.

my friend has strawberry blonde locks like a lions mane and just flips it over to one side or does a top knot. her hair is to die for. I cant help getting down over this. is there any thing else I could try?

I've had greys since I was 15, and am now 35% grey at age 30 :(. I have the opposite issue in that mine is so frizzy and thick that hairdressers charge me an extra 20 quid to cut it! As for fixes, see my post on henna in the "hair help" thread. Basically multiple henna treatments varnish the hair strands, making hair thicker and heavier. It has to be good quality though (pure 100% henna and not from a box). I am harping on about this a bit but I love a bit of henna!

Are there potential medications a person might take to grow thicker hair? And what about vitamins, like calcium and iron? That might help a wee bit.

Have you looked at tape in extensions? They are specifically for people who have fine hair, yes the other type of extensions ring, bonded etc will damage hair as they are too heavy and can cause bald patches, but the tape ins are very light and can be cut to very small sizes so less weight, have a look on you tube there is loads of info on there about them and also you don’t have to have a full head of extensions, you could just have a few in at the side for added volume. They are high maintenance, special shampoos etc but they are very natural looking, cost effective and last about 3 moths before they need refitting, worth you having a look I think.

Prenatal vitamins worked for me. Hair is noticeably thicker

happyfrown · 30/12/2017 22:48

is tha hair help thread under style and beauty? ill have a look into it. ive had grey hairs since I had my dc1 at 19. not fun at all.
ive been on iron tablet before while iron was low. my last blood test came back that it is a tad high Confused so doc say I don't need iron tabs. ive been put on b12 pills for tiredness.

I will check out the tape ins but I doubt id be able to afford 3 monthly cost on a low budget. worth a look though.

my friend mentioned the something like hair, skin & nails med? anyone know of this?

I think it’s genetic. Mine is exactly the same. It’s fucking awful so I feel for you.

happyfrown · 30/12/2017 22:53

raving - is prenatal the name or is there a certain brand?

I was thinking of going to the gp but worried he will laugh me out the room telling me to come back when I have a real problem Sad
I have BPD which one of the traits is body dyspmorphia so to me it is a problem.

For a cost guide my hair cost £150 my hairdresser charged £40 to fit them, less than an hour to put them in, the hair is reusable.

happyfrown · 30/12/2017 23:00

oh my, will be saving for a while. last time I spent that much regarding my hair I bought a 3/4 Cheryl cole syle wig which looked so nice but was heavy and when I took it off It reminded me how ugly I really am under it all Sad but that was 7 odd years ago.

I have used Imedeen Hair & Nails tablets and they definitely make my hair and nails grow more quickly. I'm not sure if they help with thickness though as my hair is reasonably thick already (although not super thick).

They're not cheap - about £25 a packet - but they're always on 3 for 2 at boots. Also I don't take them every day as they make my hair grow too quickly and my grey roots come through!

happyfrown · 30/12/2017 23:17

thanks JW. will check the website.

My daughter has hair like yours. It is very thin and exactly as you described. I've researched so much online to see if there is anything I can do to help but your hairdresser is right. It is genetic (from her Dad's side).

I've tried having it layered (isn't thick enough to take layers), I've brushed it to make it appear thicker but its condition is poor and I noticed tonight the sides so her hair near her temples is very receded.

I don't have advice other than to advise not to use heavy products in it. Personally I think having it cut shorter looks better than long as it tends to look like tails when its longer.

minipie · 30/12/2017 23:36

I have crap thin hair too. One of my DDs has my hair, the other has a strawberry blonde lions mane like your friend (must be from DH's side).

I suspect vitamin/mineral supplements are the most likely to help. Never tried myself though.

happyfrown · 31/12/2017 00:35

ive tried layers but didn't help as you say didn't sit right / not thick enough. yes I learned the hard way to give up on hair products and being out of pocket. I was actually thinking next time I get a trim to have it shorter. but I know ill hate it.

my sister has the same hair as me but she doesn't care about her appearance so it don't bother her. think id be more peeved if she had the golden lions mane haha.

My gp suggested silica and selenium supplements (both are in hair and nail vitamins). There was a noticeable improvement within a surprisingly short timeframe.

RavingRoo · 31/12/2017 00:59

Prenatal are the complete vitamin tablets aimed at women who are trying to conceive a child. Pregnacare, Santogen, store own brands - they all worked equally for me.

Bimbop5 · 31/12/2017 03:24

I take FloraSil Plant Based Silica caplets by a brand called Florasil. Its derived from spring horsetail. It is specifically for hair and nails. I've been taking it for about 3 months now and my nails are strong and long. My hair is fine but there is lots of it and its growing like crazy.
