How much did you spend on S and B in 2017?

I've written everything I've spent and it's £60 month on clothes, beauty and hair.

£45 of this is clothes, the rest is averaged out cheapish haircuts with the odd expensive (colour) one plus new mascaras, foundations and lipstick.

I really love clothes and looking nice (and think I generally do barring my pj look at home!) so I'm pleased with this I think.

If household income is relevant, we live well, within our means and save every month.

What about everyone else. I know some will say that I spend more each month than they have all year. And that's fine. That was me for a good 10 years when we were saving for a home and dc.

I wrote mine down too. Clothing is about £1600 but that includes a day at Bicester where I bought a bag and a one-off Burberry coat that came to about £600. The year before it was about £1100.

I don't think I spent more than £50 on beauty. I made a couple of Body Shop orders but otherwise I used supermarket-bought shampoo and didn't buy any makeup.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 28/12/2017 14:20

Hmm: undies and tights £100
Clothes: £600
Make-up and hair: 1300
Shoes and bags: 200

I am pretty frugal compared to income.

Jaimx86 · 28/12/2017 14:33

I can't even begin to count. Well into 1000s including all hair, beauty and clothes. Although I've spent within my means, it makes me feel a bit sick at how wasteful it is. I'm definitely aiming to cut down this year and have avoided the Boxing Day sales.

AmethystMoon · 28/12/2017 15:08

Urghh just added mine up.
Depressed at how much I've spent. Beauty spend was slightly down on last year so that is good. However, I want to get that down more in 2018 by using up the vast amount I have stashed.

Clothes, I bought three expensive hand bags and also bought a Burberry Coat at Bicester. Without those I'd be better than last year....but I'm not! I've picked up a few bits in the sales, two dresses and two tops in COS and some socks, a top and two dresses in Seasalt. I'm stopping there and deleting all incoming sales emails from today Grin

The bags were very out of the ordinary purchases for me. I now have some great classics of good quality that will last me years, I genuinely do not need or, more importantly want any more handbags!

jelly10 · 28/12/2017 15:17

I record all my spending in an app and this thread prompted me to have a look. Turns out you can look at the annual totals, and... £1200 on clothes, £400 on beauty products and £200 on treatments.

I'm quite shocked actually, I didn't think clothes or beauty products would be that much. I've tried to be more careful and mindful in 2017 but clearly there's scope to do better. I wonder if setting a budget for clothes in particular would be a good idea. I'd like to spend half that amount next year (so average £50 per month). And I don't actually need anything, so it should be do-able. But then I didn't need anything this year Sad

HeGrowsOnYou · 28/12/2017 15:35

I think it does help to write it down. For the last four year's I've spent about the same.

Dh would say its a lot but he spends on almost daily beer and wine and I don't.

I'd rather not add mine up, as I'm sure it's thousands Blush

But, but, but, hear me out... I'm done. I needed a whole new wardrobe and beauty after deciding that ds was our last baby and PP weight loss. I don't need another thing for all of 2018 until advent calendars are released
I'm doing a complete no spend - no shoes, clothes, makeup. I have a wardrobe full of everything imaginable and dressing table covered with beauty products.
I'll get my hair cut and highlighted every few months but that's it.

I've even unfollowed bloggers and unsubscribed from emails so as not to tempt myself.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/12/2017 16:03

I kept a diary 2017 , need to update it and get the grand total.

It is nowhere NEAR what DD spends though Shock

Jaimx86 · 28/12/2017 16:08

What is the name of the app you use, Jelly? It sounds like a good idea.

SleepingBooty · 28/12/2017 16:16

I only have averages per month:
£89.90 on clothes (for us all)
£104.75 on toiletries and haircuts

Not bad as I've really cut down spending this year. Its being reduced further in 2018.

jelly10 · 28/12/2017 16:20

@Jaimx86 it's called Spending Tracker. I've got the free version and it's really good. Clearly I need to look at the totals a little more often though Blush

redmarkone · 28/12/2017 16:26

inc salon colouring, perfume, make up skincare and toiletries, id guess about £600, add clothing and i think about £1000 in total. not too bad i dont think.

redmarkone · 28/12/2017 16:35

i think i went a bit mad this year and spent most of this after i moved into my new house in early summer after 2 years of very frugal/hard saving and not doing an awful lot in order to save money. i plan to spend half this in 2018 as ive got some amazing quality make up and clothing from 2017.

TheRottweiler · 28/12/2017 16:57

Just added mine up - roughly about £200 for the year on new clothes purchased straight from a shop. £50 on 3 trims and a restyle at the hairdressers. £25 on new make-up. £210 on 2 pairs of Hotter shoes and boots (4 pairs in total - I wait for 'buy a pair get a pair half price sale....)

So less than £500 for the whole year.

I am an Assistant manager of a national Charity shop though.......:) )

Beauty products

Gannetseatfish · 28/12/2017 17:38

I’ve spent £1200 on clothes and shoes which I don’t think is too bad as I’ve been pregnant and am now breastfeeding so it includes a few decent feeding bras and new shoes as my feet have gone up a while dove Hmm. Beauty, well nothing on hair but probably £200 on skincare. I’m a bit of an addict especially when in the house with a newborn! (Me time!)

Gannetseatfish · 28/12/2017 17:39

While dove = whole size. Beautiful image x

hashtagelfie · 28/12/2017 17:39

£386 on beauty
£20 on haircut
I reckon about £250-£300 on clothes and shoes (mostly primark)

So on average £60 a month. I'm comfortable with that amount

tehmina23 · 28/12/2017 18:27

I think I don't want to know the true answer!! But more than I can afford.

HeGrowsOnYou · 28/12/2017 19:44

I thought I'd spent more to be honest. It's quite reassuring when you know you can claw back any splurges by a few quiet months

OP posts:
PollyPerky · 28/12/2017 19:48

I have no idea...
why do you keep track out of interest?

Around £550 pa on hair- that's 5 cuts and 2 colours.

Make up- foundation is £35 x 3-4 bottles a year
Other make up perhaps adds up to around £150 - I use everything up before buying more.

Skin care perhaps around £150-200pa

Clothes - no idea. I don't buy clothes every month. I tend to buy a few items at the start of each season, so in early spring and autumn. Not more than £500 pa unless I buy a big item like a coat or boots.

HeGrowsOnYou · 28/12/2017 19:52

A lifetime of having to watch the pennies I guess PollyPerky. I could afford to be more flippant about it now we're much better off but being careful is ingrained deep Smile

OP posts:
PollyPerky · 28/12/2017 19:56

I see. I couldn't be bothered...:)

HeGrowsOnYou · 28/12/2017 20:00

I don't write down every haircut! But I guess I still have guilt in buying anything for me as opposed to something that benefits the whole family.

And I love clothes!

OP posts:
Judydreamsofhorses · 28/12/2017 20:22

I don’t keep track, and it would probably scare me, but I must have spent over £600 on haircuts as I go every five weeks and pay £62 a cut...
