Excuse the franglais.

Here it is - the third thread in the series, where we add a little je ne sais quoi to our lives, inspired by the style of our souers across the Channel.

Thanks to our top contributor and style guru Botemp, we are finding ways to lift ourselves out of the style doldrums with a slash of red on the lips, a touch of white where it counts, an insouciant scarf or even an over the knee sock or two for the brave among us.

Take it as far as you dare, Mariannes!

For me it was the style that didn't work mrs. I have a vintage (60s/70s) knee length leather coat, very battered and not particularly fashionable but I love it and wear it loads. But it's very plain and simple whereas I found bikers too fussy. But to be fair, I'm not a huge fan of modern soft leather - I prefer the old school variety where you had to wear it in but then it got better all the time.

I'm also not sure about double leather but I happily wore double denim back in the day and I'm even thinking I might do it again....Grin

Crazy8 · 15/01/2018 10:30

Would someone be able to repeat the advice re wearing lipstick with a dab of a finger? . I can't find the post.

nothingreallymatters · 15/01/2018 11:21

Hello crazy think I read it here, that les parisiennes apply red lipstick very lightly with a fingertip.I didnt think I could do a red lip but this way it works.

Crazy8 · 15/01/2018 11:47

Thanks Nothing. I'll try it.

botemp · 15/01/2018 11:52

Charity shops are a fruitless effort here too, though I haven't really looked in years perhaps I should re-evaluate. My main issue with most of them is that they're run by religious organisations who will only offer aid to those of the same faith Hmm.

cactus either soft florals/polka dots short flowy dresses or tunic styles that are essentially straight (usually white or cream cotton with bits of lace or broderie anglaise) but will have little strings around the waist to give them shape. There's more variation of course, the general silhouette is definitely loose from the body though but nipped in at strategic places. Will definitely cover them in the future.

Elle, I think that's the right medium. 'Perfect' and 'nice' are both adjectives that are very much centred around dressing for the outside world (which we all do in some degree and probably predominantly as teens) but for me, items have to feel a bit like home, I'm dressing to please me first the rest comes second.

mrsthomas, it definitely sounds like a toss-up. For fear of offending all leather biker jacket owners, there's nothing wrong with them, heck I even have one but it's a bright metallic sort of pewter one which is actually surprisingly versatile. However, I think they have very much become this thing of shiny buttery leather (goat, sheeps or lamb when the OG version is stiff cow and matted with age) with very shiny prominent hardware (which is nice against matt finishes but becomes a tad blingy with the more luxurious pelts) and are very fitted when the original was oversized and off the shoulders which gave a bit of breathing space around the neck which is much more flattering, I feel. I want to attach a picture but it appears I've used up my quota for life on MN or something? link here

Anyhow it's very much become this item to 'spice up' your rather formal wardrobe and perfectly blown out hair with but essentially it's become quite bland and formal by the ubiquity of it. From the one you've linked, I do like that the hardware is matt black, that pulls it away from the cliche and makes it a bit fresher and less fussy but on the other side, I don't really rate the Karl Lagerfeld brand. It really feels like an American diffusion brand that runs on a big name but doesn't have the quality to match and often is made in cheaper countries with questionable ethics.

If I'm unsure and keeping it around and waiting out the returns period on something there is a difference between just admiring something for what it is and wanting to keep it around because of that (and possibly representing a great bargain) and actively really wanting to wear it or finding it working with unexpected outfits, etc. Usually, if I manage to make it close to the final return date and I haven't ripped the tag off yet it almost always goes back.

Crazy, it's just using your finger as an applicator and tapping in rather than using the bullet straight on the lips. It's demonstrated in this around the 3min mark. That video reminds me though, as the mentions the Rene Furterer brand which I've had a shampoo sample of a while back. I was quite impressed with it, not enough to switch out my CR for but I liked it quite a bit.

botemp · 15/01/2018 11:59

Sorry can't remember who asked (and I'm too lazy to read back) but I remember forgetting to respond to why I don't rate the Repetto ballerinas. It's mainly that I don't like ballerinas without an inner 'nose' concealed at the front. When it's just leather over time the big toe starts wearing through and I feel it just sort of ruins the shape of the shoes as a result.

They're a lot harder to get hold of now since they're not an it shoe anymore but the Lanvin ballerinas are still the nicest ones out there IME. They have a really good inner sole that's very supportive and comfy, always did find them quite a bit of money because ballerinas aren't really a type of shoe that last. I'm more into the pointy toe versions currently which seems timely so at least there's a bit of choice.

TheOtherGirl · 15/01/2018 14:00

DH took me out for brunch today. It's chilly & so grey here today, so I dug out a vintage, Gap black&white stripped cowl neck sweater (the quality is so lovely) + black Levi CT jeans + dark red, patent ankle boots which happen to exactly match my Shellac Oxblood nail polish.

Wore Ruby Woo, obviously.

Woman at next table admired my boots Smile

Tanaqui · 15/01/2018 17:36

WE should all admire random peoples clothing more often, as it is so nice when it happens!

I don't suit a biker either - I am long bodied, so they are mostly too short, and my rib cage is too barrel like to make boxy look good (struggle with oversize jumpers and scarves, unless very long, for the same reason).

I am meant to be shopping my wardrobe and doing low spend 2018, but I may have bought some lace up knee high boots - but they are waterproof! And were in the sale - although not at all parisienne. Wretched pic won't work (and keeps eating my post), but link here:

EnidButton · 15/01/2018 17:49

Really like those Tan! Wonder what the fit around the calves is like? I need some that aren't too wide so lace up ones could be very good. Will you let us know what they're like when you get them please? Smile

schmalex · 15/01/2018 18:59

What a great haul peonies! I've given up on charity shops around here - it's mostly worn out Primark or M&S tat. The one time I found a lovely blue wool COS top it turned out to have a hole in it when I got it home. I did repair it though.

botemp · 15/01/2018 19:13

Actually, those boots are quite popular in France, especially in bad weather conditions. I think the difference is that elsewhere it's bought to accommodate wider calves, for the French it's about keeping skinny calves warm. The general design is also slightly less outdoorsy (though I'm sure those Timberlands are quite popular in rural areas) or it's a take on it by adding in a heel. You often see them take the extra length of laces and bind the top which I always find a charming detail.

Possibly rarer in Paris but I've seen them there as well, either as part of a full faux hunting regalia (riding trousers, big scarf/cape and fedora) or under a mini with a slouchy knit and giant billowy coat, beanie, and scarf (students usually).

Hurray! I'm allowed pictures again Halo

Tanaqui · 15/01/2018 20:05

Huh, I’m French after all! Not sure there is enough lace left to bind the top, but will give it a go.

Enid, I got them in the Timberland shop and so I tried them on- I have an ankle pair so hope they will be as comfy- the zip pair were too wide on my calf (I’m a size 10-12 but calves are quite big) but as these can be tightened they are fine.

I am rural and walk a lot so a heel isn’t great, I have some fab heeled ankle boots I hardly get to wear 😢.

Where are les Francais on the skinnies vs bootcuts debate on the other thread?

EnidButton · 15/01/2018 20:17

That sounds good Tan thank you.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 15/01/2018 20:24

I remember in the 90s making fun of my mum for wearing skinny / straight leg 80s jeans while we were all in baggy / flares / bootcut ! I don't think I could ever return to bootcut tbh. Straight boyfriend maybe just about

AuldAlliance · 15/01/2018 21:19

I wrote a longish blurb, but couldn't get it to post...

I am not a fan of skinnies, as I think they suit relatively few people, they are just worn by the majority because they think they are the current shape to wear.
Due to wide hips and skinny legs, I can't wear them. I wear sort of bootcuts (not flarey ones). I loved GAP long&lean and western bootcut. I still have a pair of the latter and get them out sometimes.

Was at a conference over the weekend. Wore a black knee-length ruched skirt, white collarless longish shirt, dark green longline cardigan, pale caramel scarf, black tights and these boots. They are great for the skinny ankles, as they don't bag at the top and look welly boot-ish. They are v warm & comfy, too.
And, on top, of course, the green Comptoir coat. Definitely better unbuttoned, weather permitting.
I felt good, and got compliments.
And my DSs told me today my grey streaks are "trop cool, Maman", so it's all positive here. Smile

I replied to a few PP on my lost post, but am still catching up. Sorry for moi, moi, moi post...

Asitgoes · 15/01/2018 21:45

Love those boots Auld. Will have to try them on despite not being skinny of ankle Grin

Theshipsong · 15/01/2018 22:56

Can I ask your opinions on this?

www.stories.com/ie/Ready-to-wear/Outerwear/Wool_Trenchcoat/582949-0167979007.2

I am short at 5ft 2 but I tried it on in black in the shop and really liked the length and the way it was cut. Ideally I would like it in navy but it has sold out and that leaves beige (hopefully more camel).

I really liked it when I tried it on but now I wonder if a belted coat is too 'matronly' unless you look like Meghan Markle which alas I do not.

prettybird · 15/01/2018 23:18

Going back to one of your posts yesterday Botemp - you've solved a 30 year old riddle for me. I bought a ramie top in the US when I was there on business in 1988 (which I loved and has long since bitten the dust) and couldn't work out what it was made from - but somehow knew it was natural. Nowadays I'd be able to look it up on t'internet - but you triggered the memory of the mystery Grin

Methenyouplus4 · 15/01/2018 23:39

Theship- that coat looks gorgeous.

Bloomed · 16/01/2018 01:03

I saw a woman wearing a dark green velvet dress trimmed with lace plus a biker jacket and lace up boots today. Looked very fresh. Reminded me that I like green/red/blue so dark they're almost black.

EnidButton · 16/01/2018 02:15

Dammit those boots are gorgeous too Auld! I'm not supposed to be buying much this month but boots are a weakness. I love them.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 16/01/2018 06:42

Bloomed, that outfit sounds amazing!

ProperLavs · 16/01/2018 06:43

I do not need more boots or coats, I do not need more boots or coats.
Those timberland ones are lovely. I have very narrow calves and it is a nightmare finding boots that fit, I hadn't thought of lace up ones. Fly boots are the only ones I can find with narrow enough calves, thanks for giving me a new avenue to explore!

TheGrumpySquirrel · 16/01/2018 07:02

Yesterday I wore my black Seraphine wrap dress with the Isabel Marant wool jacket and I think it looked ok, chunky ankle boots not the most flattering but hey.
