Excuse the franglais.

Here it is - the third thread in the series, where we add a little je ne sais quoi to our lives, inspired by the style of our souers across the Channel.

Thanks to our top contributor and style guru Botemp, we are finding ways to lift ourselves out of the style doldrums with a slash of red on the lips, a touch of white where it counts, an insouciant scarf or even an over the knee sock or two for the brave among us.

Take it as far as you dare, Mariannes!

@ChangoMutney I have a huge box of sale stuff from Arket. Two lovely merino cardigans, a perfect pair of black trousers and more blue shirts than I can justify keeping! Been struggling for days to narrow down what I can keep.

Canters15 · 07/01/2018 01:10

cuir that's my main worry with the Hermes. It would have definitely worked at the height of my scarf wearing phase (when I was mid twenties with long blonde hair) but as an early 30s big boobed brunette mother I think it would be too easy to slip into frumpsville.

Anyway I told DH yesterday we'd leave it. I can't justify that much money on something I'm not utterly sold on. I told him instead to get me a bottle of a perfume I've been lusting after but was too pricy for me to justify buying for myself...so he did, and we'll save the rest of the money for another time.

ToElleWithIt · 07/01/2018 07:46

Epic wedding photos bananafish. You were a stunning bride.
canters sounds like a good call. What perfume did you go for?
No Kiko here unfortunately. I’ll have to find one when I’m traveling.
OTK boots arrived and I’m not sure. Feel like I’m channeling Jack Sparrow. Im going to return them. Hunt for a smart low -heeled or flat boot continues. Very tempted to try Stella Luna ones. Also took a chance on a pair of the Miu Miu buckled ballet flat. Have to admit I was a bit dubious, but they do work on me. I’ll probably leave off the ribbons most of the time as they feel a bit much for everyday. They are so comfortable.

botemp · 07/01/2018 08:04

Just doing a quick check in, slightly bleary-eyed, as got in late last night from the trip to Antwerp. Managed to get the cutest little jacket from Dries van Noten. Totally forgot I could do cute and get away with it not looking like a little girl, it has really lovely shoulders, will take a pic later. Also snagged a pair of silk slightly asymmetric trousers from IRO in a second hand shop but never been worn. Slightly too big but that's what I like in a silk trouser and it has a paper bag waist so not an issue, will be wearing it low rise as well.

Going to read now and catch up properly later.

Bloomed · 07/01/2018 13:21

Sounds great Bo. Am very interested in silk trousers. Do they crease?

LilaoftheGreenwood · 07/01/2018 13:26

Oh my gosh I need this. Je marque mon place pour suiver le thread. I am a very English disaster area at the moment, but perhaps I'll start right now by wearing the red beret I rarely bother to wear to return some lights to Screwfix.

explodingkittens · 07/01/2018 14:23

Well, the TKMaxx trousers were a bit of a disaster. The Costume National ones were too small, although the Stella Mac ones did fit nicely, at least for my waist and hips. However...both pairs were also ridiculously long. I mean, insanely, comedically long. I'm 5'7" so not exactly a teeny pixie and I looked as if I was a toddler wearing mummy's clothes. There was a good foot of extra material around my ankles.

I suppose I could have kept them and had them taken up but I know how lazy I am about stuff like that and if it hadn't worked it would have been a silly waste of money. so, back they went Sad Hey ho, no wonder they were such a bargain!

Still on the search then for the perfect pair of smart yet relaxed wool trousers...

Canters15 · 07/01/2018 14:44

Elle Tom Ford Black Orchid. It's lovely and makes me feel how I imagine wearing a YSL smoking suit would feel. V pleased for you re Miu Miu flats, please report back on how they wear up- they're on my wish list!

botemp · 07/01/2018 16:29

Chango, for further dresses (saw a lot of French shops yesterday), Promod is very hit and miss fabric wise but they do sell the typical French dresses at lower prices with lower hemlines. Devernois and Caroll Paris are more your average 30+ brand in France (so a tad dull) but good for anyone who actually needs office wear. Sessun, Des Petits Hauts, Les Petites, and Swildens have a bit more of a casual vibe but would work in a more casual office. Essentiel Antwerp, also have nice dresses now and then but I find them a tad overpriced as a brand and the fabrics don't really match up to that price tag.

I did also discover a new brand, Drolatic, which has really lovely casual, relaxed easy dresses and casual wear. All very summery though, it seems to be new-ish, and it seems really suitable for high heat/humidity climates as it's all very loose on the body but still flattering. And I did just discover whilst googling that search result number 4 is a shop that carries them (along with a whole host of other French niche brands) in Singapore and they have a shop in Sydney too. small.com.sg/

Speaking of Singapore, yes can definitely imagine it being tough, spent a few weeks there for a wedding and the weather was challenging to say the least. Not only the humidity but you're in and out of (very dry) airconditioned spaces all the time and the locals all dress quite formally and demure. Lots of pastels if I recall and they'll dress up to go to browse a mall, etc. Status is a big thing too, high importance on signifiers of wealth. Though I was the sickest I've ever been there on the last two days before leaving and had to be propped up with I don't want to remember what kind of lethal cocktail to be able to fly back home, I was hallucinating through most of it (before the drugs ever kicked in) so possibly this is all some odd figment of the imagination posing as a memory Confused

For the Australians, I sometimes watch Mademoiselle on YouTube and she often showcases interesting Aussie brands. I can find her a bit tiring though, it's all capsule wardrobe monochrome wardrobes with a bit of pattern, I thought she was well into her thirties but she's about to turn 30, and she's already in the mindset that 'she's too old for lots of things' so I tend to dip in and out. She mentions Karen Walker quite a lot and those things look interesting, also Everlane for basics which is an ethical online brand but very J. Crew-esque, I think American but delivers to Aus (but not here [angy]).

I don't think we've really covered skin tone/undertone with red lipstick match, just mainly shouted out suggestions. I think some articles were linked, I know I've posted this one before but that really only goes into the very basic colouring spectrum of orange v blue. The Kiko is a neutral/true red at 114 and then down to 113 it goes pink and blue to a berry, then up at 115 to oranges. Bingo, I think the list I drew up for cherries (perhaps she can repost if she made a note of it) would work for you as well. Luna, same list but focus on the ones that are more pinkish in hue like the Chanel limited edition (I want to say 1) and Sisley Geisha one (think L25).

mrsreynolds are you looking for advice for once you've lost the weight or during? If it's the former I'd just hold off, you never know where you'll end up and what your shape is like until you get there. I've been promising to get round to summer/spring wardrobes but it's a lot all at once so it'll come in bits over the next few weeks, I suspect.

Proper, if you're making a digital list do you mind sharing it somehow. Ability to add to it also useful as a reference for everyone on here. I've started putting in brands in bold (when I'll remember) to make it easier.

Ah the semi tuck, it is Parisian in origin, the French Vogue team really popularised it. IME it works best with a low rise or a medium rise worn as low rise (depends where your waist sit). I could do it at a 10 but at a 12 it looked wrong, it'll vary wildly per person. The full tuck only works for me if it's high rise and there needs to be high contrast in volume and whatever is voluminous needs to be a material that does that well, eg. a stiff shirt in tight skinny jeans looks rigid, but unless you're a very angular body slinky silk on slinky silk (or similar) just ends up looking drab.

Currently, I'm more into the 'half-hearted tuck', so either only on one side asymmetrically (much like in pic 3) or only on the front middle to create a sort of reverse v, about a hand widths worth (sometimes two) of material.

kittyhello, if it's stiffer denim shirt, I find they work well as a jacket/blazer type thing. Fold up sleeves and wear over dresses or a tee. If you're not long and lean like Freja Beha Erichsen in pic 1 (not Parisian, I know, but she's like an honorary one) then play with raising the waist on the shirt/high rise and length of the shirt so there's a noticeable contrast so it emphasises a sort of waist hidden in there rather than ending up looking like a block.

Exciting the Miu Mius worked out for you, Elle. I'm quite taken with them myself, didn't realise they could be worn without the satin bands which were my main concerns (busy ankles don't work well for me anymore, weirdly enough). What colour did you get? I'm very tempted by the Stella Lunas as well, especially the styles with all the buckles, saw some fab ones at &Other Stories yesterday in the new collection but quite highly priced for them (175 or 200 euros) but already sold out except in the smallest and largest size. Will post a pic from my phone later on. They did make me think the Stella Lunas were once again very reasonable and can't make up my mind whether to just go ahead and place an order or hold on until I'm in Paris which is in about 3 weeks. Think I'll wait until the 10th when the official Paris sales start, if things look to suddenly be shifting or discounted more I won't hold off. Although I still haven't narrowed down which ones I want exactly Blush

Yes, bloomed, I think pretty much all lightweight silk trousers crease but as long as they're not a formal pair I feel it adds to the character of them. I like them slouchy so it feels purposeful and too tight silk pants is asking for trouble as the seams will break the fabric as they're stronger than the fabric.

If you get the ones in darker patterns the creasing isn't all that noticeable. I usually get at least one pair per year as they're just the best for high heat, I'd love to find a pair that's basically open at the sides for great movement and airing possibilities. I do think they're great for humid climates though, it helps 'steam' them a bit so you get that washed silk look with them. Saw some fab ones of those from a brand called bananatime Grin, made me think of banana, were pricey though (300euros, not in the sale) but lovely silk, nice stretchy waist, etc.

Sorry to hear, exploding, Costume National is notoriously small. I do miss when pants were super long. All wide legged pants I'm coming across in shops are cropped which is about ankle length on me, which looks awful, taking it up to be cropped even worse.

Just caught up with thread while returning both DS1&2 back to university (DH drove I was in charge of travelling music and reading this thread)

I finally went natural with my grey hair a couple of years ago and my hairdresser said I had good hair texture for it ie not like wire which is hard to live with. But my hair is very fine so I use a purple shampoo every other wash and don't use a conditioner very often as it will goes to even my fly away.

I had my hoc done and was diagnosed as a deep summer which means I dip in to the winter colours as well. It really opened my eyes to colours I had never thought to try and I actually felt more confident in clothes shops instead of looking around completely lost.

Once I lose my weight which has crept back on I am going to book a JL personal shopping to get some ideas on styles to try.

LunaTheCat · 07/01/2018 19:07

Bo thanks for lipstick recommendations. Unfortunately no Kiko in NZ but have screenshot your advice for upcoming UK trip.

stoplickingthetelly · 07/01/2018 19:42

Hi everyone, can't believe I've only just discovered this thread. So much amazing advice. I'm really stuck in a rut and in the process of losing weight (another stone to go), feeling very frumpy and dowdy. This is just the type of advice I need, although definitely don't have the same budget as a lot of you. Thanks everyone 😀

ProperLavs · 07/01/2018 19:45

Yes, I'll do that bo. I was going to ask you, then I realised I was being extraordinarily lazy!!WinkBlush

ToElleWithIt · 07/01/2018 20:04

botemp photo of how the ribbons attach. I couldn’t figure it out from any online store either. I don’t know why they didn’t make it clearer. I went for the pinky beige leather. Sadly not reduced, but the ones that were were either satin (which I think is a bit too impractical) or a loud tartan.

Just popping in after a fun weekend in Prague, though off the beaten track because my sister spent lots of time there in the early 90s and now refuses to go where the hordes of tourists are...
No style spotting to be done where we were, but it was funny to see people's jaws drop as she (5'11, skinny, idiosyncratic style, cropped grey hair, dark eyebrows, no make up...) passed by, in an ocean of very dyed hair, ostentatious make up and either a slight penchant for Pretty Woman style clothing or a resolute decision to wear countless layers of garments because it's January, even though it was about 7-12°. Staring isn't frowned upon, and we were stared at long and hard.

Not Antwerp or Dries, but good fun.

I lost my scarf in the airport Sad, though.
A lovely blue fringed cashmere and silk scarf, big, but light, and cosy. Busy e-mailing them in the vain hope I'll get it back.

I've skimmed, will try to read and respond tomorrow.

quirkychick · 07/01/2018 21:31

littleredlipstick I think you are similar colours to me, I've also gone silver.

In the best Parisian maman fashion, I directed my 12yr old to Kiko, as she wanted a long lasting eyeliner (she has discovered makeup), she couldn't find it but bought a very lovely purple eyeshadow which lasted well, so I wonder if I buy a Kiko eyeshadow, it will help the pencil eyeliner even more. The pencil is good, but maybe a better eyeliner underneath it would be better. I seem to have gone from I don't have/need any more make up to buying an eyeliner, a lipstick and talking myself into some eyeshadow!

cactusbutt · 08/01/2018 04:51

bo thanks for that. I keep getting ads for Everlane in my Facebook, but have never checked out their website before. Looks like very decent basics.

Currently, despite the heat, I'm being tempted by a pair of Helmut Lang leather leggings on eBay. They've allegedly been worn once only and need a back seam repair but are a steal at $280 (about £160). Worth it?

TheGrumpySquirrel · 08/01/2018 06:22

@cactusbutt I'm picking up my eBay pair from the post office this morning (won them for £130) so I'll let you know! Is it an auction or buy it now for £160?

quirkychick · 08/01/2018 06:42

cactusbutt I've never bought Everlane but seen it recommended on Un-fancy blog, she is usually very upfront about sponsors and ethics too. If that's any help.

AuldA sorry to hear about your scarf, I hope you get it back! I went to Prague years ago and it was freezing -8°C but it was December, so lots of lovely Christmas markets and mulled wine! I remember it was easy to spot the tourists in wool, heavy coats, whereas the locals seemed to be in thin and cold-looking, shiny anoraks.

ProperLavs · 08/01/2018 07:03

I'd love to go to Prague one day Auld, lost scarf is a bummer though.

I got one of those Kiko eyeshadow sticks than you supposedly can't get off and lasts all day- well not on my oily lids it doesn't. I haven't found the staying power any different to anything else Sad. Like the colour though.

quirkychick · 08/01/2018 07:25

Oh thanks Proper, I think dd got a powder eyeshadow. It lasted well yesterday, she has oily/olive skin too.

Methenyouplus4 · 08/01/2018 08:30

Auld- that is annoying. Hoping out hope you&lovely scarf are reunited.

Proper- back in the day (about 10 years ago), I got a sample of Urban Decay eyeshadow primer and that made a huge difference.

People Tree order arrived-really wanted to like them but cut was pretty unflattering on long skirt (looked like a sack) while the red one looked quote nice but the cotton was very thin and I can't imagine even the most seamless underwear wouldn't give very obvious lines. Both being returned tomorrow.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 08/01/2018 08:34

Well the eBay HL LL look good as new so pretty chuffed! I think they might be slightly too long for me but will report back tonight when I can try them on

Methenyouplus4 · 08/01/2018 08:37

Bought this facial roller with their Vit C eye make up remover (recomended by Sali Hughes). Am enjoying spend time on the canvas too. Last night I had a lovely long bath and used a lovely Jo Wood body scrub and bath oil I was given as a gift (but saved for no obvious reason), used a face mask and filed nails. Not sure why I was saving things 'for best'? In reality, lovely products used on a normal day is a great pick me up.

Methenyouplus4 · 08/01/2018 08:37

That's great Grumpy- I love it when a great ebay purchase comes off!
