Tulip skirt

MulhuddartDrive · 27/12/2017 16:56

I need a couple of very simple work skirts. Skater and pencil styles look terrible on me and I'm looking for something with a tulip shape. I've looked at Jaeger, house of fraser, asos, h&m, Hobbs, closet and john Lewis without success. Has anyone spotted any recently?

I think cos had a few a while ago.

MulhuddartDrive · 28/12/2017 15:35

Thanks, found one on cos that I'll try. I don't usually look there.

eBay is usually good for these

fiorentina · 28/12/2017 16:58

Cos has some navy wool ones in the sale.

Bloomed · 28/12/2017 17:04

There were a few around a while ago so agree that ebay would be a good idea.

MulhuddartDrive · 28/12/2017 17:30

I've had bad luck on eBay of late and I want to be able to return if it's not right, so I'll see what the Cos one is like when it arrives.

I'm also looking at sewing classes since I can never seem to find what I want in shops!

Tulip is the shape that suits me too! Any links?

HeyMacWey · 28/12/2017 20:52

Do you know anyone who's handy with a sewing machine?

Lots of lovely tulip skirt patterns around.

MulhuddartDrive · 28/12/2017 20:58

This Cos skirt is the closest I've found to what I want. I have ordered it (partly because the fabric looks gorgeous) and I'll see how I get on with it. Otherwise, I've emailed a place about sewing classes in February Smile

Would any of these Miracle pieces work for you? Really decent quality, the dresses are good, too.

Enjoy!

eloisesparkle · 29/12/2017 09:42

OP why do pencil skirts not suit you ?
I thought they'd suit everybody.

MulhuddartDrive · 29/12/2017 11:57

I'm short so need to tuck in tops or I look like I've a thrown a nighty on over my clothes. Tucking highlights my belly and bum, which are both too large for my liking. I've altered tops in the past to shorten them to sit outside the skirt but then they just fall from my boobs in a curtain.

Tulip or bubble shapes are better as the tulip tends to have more forgiving fabric draping, and bubble hems flare out enough to disguise my belly but not make me look like a stunted pyramid, which is the look that a-line skirts achieve with distinction.

I love pencil skirts as a concept so it has been a wrench to finally accept that the hourglass look that should suit me just doesn't.

I've seen loads of tulip shaped skirt patterns around, I'd forgotten how much I like tulip skirts. Thanks for reminding me.

ChishandFips33 · 29/12/2017 12:21

I have a couple from Matalan and Primark and agree they are very forgiving

twinkledag · 29/12/2017 15:02

@MulhuddartDrive - I'm the same. Pencil skirts looked great on me prebaby but now I need to hide my belly and bum! My waist is small so tulip is a great style for me. Goes in and out at the right places Grin

MikeUniformMike · 29/12/2017 15:19

How about a straight skirt with a semi fitted top, or a narrow A-line. M&S, Boden, Phase 8, Zara or Jigsaw might have some. Would fat face or white stuff have something or would they not be businesslike?

Google 'Best skirt for your body type' listed a few sites that might point you to similar styles.

MulhuddartDrive · 29/12/2017 16:17

That's it, Twinkle, going in and out where needed is essential! My waist is a good bit smaller than my hips, so straight skirts tend to gape and high waists end up sitting too close to my boobs in a comedic Simon Cowell style.

Haven't looked at boden or phase 8, so I'll look now, thanks. I'm looking for plain black, navy or grey. I'll check Zara but they don't usually suit me. I tried on three in jigsaw yesterday but no joy.

I'll have to start googling patterns for my dressmaking class in February Smile

There are a couple on asos. This satin one could look very nice for formal events m.asos.com/asos/asos-satin-tulip-pencil-skirt/prd/8390040?clr=darkgreen&SearchQuery=tulip%20skirt&gridcolumn=1&gridrow=1&gridsize=2&pge=1&pgesize=72&totalstyles=10

MikeUniformMike · 29/12/2017 21:59

I shouldn't say it but you'll easily pick some up in charity shops probably with tags on.
You could get one and get a dressmaker to copy the style.

looks nice.

Lots of tulip skirts on ebay.

ignore fashion - go for what suits you. Looking good never goes out of style.

twinkledag · 29/12/2017 23:41

That New Look dress is lovely!

@MulhuddartDrive - try the brand Closet, they suit our shape!

MulhuddartDrive · 30/12/2017 00:04

That new look dress is lovely, but I prefer separates for work. Closet has lots of dressed the right shape too, but can't see any skirts I like.
